24.01.2022 NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation awarded to three Far West LHD employees A huge congratulations and well done to Melissa McInnes, Sarah Koronis and Heba Day who have been awarded a NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation. The citation recognises the outstanding contribution of volunteers and service agency personnel who played a significant role in the emergency response effort to combat the 2019-2020 bushfires in NSW. In response to the needs of communities in NSW... during the crisis, the three Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Services staff showed dedication, selflessness and sacrifice and were deployed as part of the emergency response team, helping people on the ground through such a traumatic event. They were presented with the NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation. The insignia of the Citation is a rectangular silver framed navy-blue bar featuring a red stripe to signify the bushfire event, and the NSW State Flower (Waratah). It was accompanied by a Letter from the Premier of NSW and a Certificate co-signed by the Premier and Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons. They also received an embroidered Commemorative Cap. The citation was presented in a local ceremony by Ms Jodie Miller, Program Director MHDA, Far West LHD. This citation from the Premier is in recognition of your dedication and support to those communities and community members who needed you at such a devastating time, said Ms Miller. On behalf of the FWLHD, I wish to congratulate each of you for your contribution and service to the emergency bushfire response and the people you helped. 15.01.2022 Hospital visitors reminded of new arrangements Patients at Broken Hill Health Service are now allowed one visitor at any one time. Previously patients were restricted to one visitor per patient per day. Visitor hours remain the same: 10am to 12noon and 5pm to 7pm each day. (Visitor hours do not impact on people with health appointments or attending the Emergency Department).... Everyone is asked to adhere to these new visitor arrangements, and avoid all non-essential visits to the hospital. Visitors are also reminded to bring a mask or face covering to wear if they are coming to a Far West LHD facility, to help prevent a COVID-19 outbreak in the health service. Wearing a mask or face covering whilst visiting a patient in a FWLHD facility is mandatory. This rule also applies to anyone attending a medical appointment in a FWLHD health service. Remember - If you have even one symptom, and even if it is mild, get a test. Symptoms can include fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, body aches, sore or scratchy throat, headache, runny nose, muscle pain, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, or loss of taste or smell. You can get a test at our Drive Thru Clinic at the Community Health Centre (9am to 11am, Monday to Friday) or at COVID-19 clinic at the Broken Hill Health Service in Thomas Street, 10am to 8pm seven days a week. Don't become complacent about COVID-19 - if you have a symptom, get tested, no matter how mild!

14.01.2022 WARNING: Rise in viral gastroenteritis in Broken Hill community We are urging people to take precautions amid a rise in viral gastroenteritis cases in the Broken Hill community. FWLHD Director of Public Health, Priscilla Stanley, said gastroenteritis is highly infectious and may spread rapidly. We’re seeing a few spikes in the number of people presenting to hospital with gastro symptoms in Broken Hill, Ms Stanley said. ... The best defence is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 10 seconds before handling and eating food, and always wash your hands after using the toilet, changing nappies or assisting someone who has diarrhoea or vomiting. Infants or children in childcare or school who develop vomiting or diarrhoea should stay at home for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have stopped, as should staff members and anyone whose work involves handling food or looking after children, the elderly or patients. Symptoms of viral gastroenteritis include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, headache and muscle aches. They can take up to three days to develop and usually last between one or two days, sometimes longer. The main treatment for viral gastroenteritis is to rest and drink plenty of fluids. Most people recover without complications, but gastroenteritis can be serious for infants, people with suppressed immune systems and the elderly. Anyone recovering from gastroenteritis should avoid visiting hospitals and aged care facilities to avoid spreading the infection to those most vulnerable. Any person living in a household affected by gastroenteritis should refrain from visiting these high-risk areas until at least 48 hours after the last person in the household has recovered.
