19.01.2022 2020 - As if COVID 19 wasn't enough now this! Fire damage from a DFES Department of Fire and Emergency Services burn in July. (Authorised I'm told) Firstly note we are not opposed to Fire Burning Programs - it is a necessity BUT we do oppose burns in the Dry Season, in particular in June/July with dangerous weather conditions and WITHOUT MANAGEMENT PLANS in place to contain or control the fires. With no notification given. * An authorised burn was started mid-July 2020... around Carson River Station by DFES,( in an area that hadn't been controlled for years - a "Tinder Box" I'm told) even though extreme wind conditions, high-velocity winds at the time! The fire travelled 160km by the time it got to Faraway Bay area and was out of control * Only due to process/procedures put in place beginning of each season Faraway Bay was saved from a lot more damage, no loss of buildings. Kevin spent days/nights fighting/ monitoring the fire that came through on both sides. (currently the only person at Faraway Bay, caretaking property while we are closed due to COVID) with high winds and ever-changing wind directions a difficult task. CONTINUAL FALLOUT FROM THESE BURNS: *Irreversible damage to Natural & Cultural Biodiversity of the Kimberley, Aboriginal Rock Art, Wildlife, Fauna * DAMAGE TO PROPERTY/LOSS OF LIVELIHOOD TO Pastoral Station Owners, Tourism Operators. Insurance claims causing a huge increase in Premiums and in some cases concern of Insurance Companies refusing to insure! * Loss of life - Have they not learn't anything! If not for COVID - I know of a Walking Group due to be in the area at the same time! They would not have known! (Not guests of Faraway Bay.) These authorised and prescribed burns are done by several Government Departments and independent Indigenous Organisations annually. NOT GOOD ENOUGH AND THINGS NEED TO CHANGE! (apologies for the length of post! so much more to be said!) #thingsneedtochange #environmentalprotection #prescribedburning
