25.01.2022 . The morning after our burn (plus a pic of ‘before’ for reference).. . Ideally, we would like to see mostly black charcoaled leaf litter left behind but with so much fuel on the ground it was hard to keep the temperature down on this burn, that’s why there is a lot of white ash. I am disappointed with this but my thinking is that with better care through more regular burning, the fuel load won’t get to be so big. Another lesson may be that we should have conducted this burn... earlier, in mid-Winter perhaps? . We are still learning. Every fire is a lesson. There is much to take in and learn from being on Country.. . . #culturalburning #indigenousknowledge #reset #fireknowledge #lessonslearned #alwayslearning #farawayfarm @ Yuin Country See more

19.01.2022 . It’s not until you have a glorious misty morning like this morning that you realise just how many beautiful spiderwebs you have in the garden. They are such incredible creatures.. . I’m a little embarrassed to say that once upon a time in my past life, I would diligently get my house sprayed with ‘environmentally-friendly’ pesticides every 6 months to keep my children ‘safe’ from spiders and all those ‘nasty’ creepy crawlers. Insert face palm []. These days I fully em...brace all the little critters of the world, spiders (and begrudgingly flies) included, because I know that having them around is a sign of a healthy and diverse ecosystem which is exactly the kind of world I want to live in. Spiders are just as important as bees which are just as important as whales which are just as important as aphids which are just as important as birds and so on. . I have this little saying - ‘You don’t know what you don’t know, but when you do know, do better.’ There have been so many times that I have wanted to give myself an uppercut for being so blind/ignorant/asleep/brainwashed for most of my life, but then I give myself a little pep talk instead and recite my little saying and continue on with my journey forward. . . . #weboflife #allcreaturesgreatandsmall #theinterconnectednessofallthings #spiderwebs #fog #mistymornings #biodiversity #onwardsandupwards #sustainableplanet #regenerationnotdegeneration #earthcare #farawayfarm @ Yuin Country See more

17.01.2022 . Beet Kvass!! . There is so much goodness coming out of the fermentation station right now. . .... Beet Kvass is a sour tonic that can be taken as a daily probiotic health shot. According to Sally Fallon Morell from Weston A. Price it helps promote regularity, aids digestion, is an excellent blood tonic, alkalines the blood, cleanses the liver, and is a good treatment for kidney stones and other ailments. . Professor Zabel observed that sick people always lack digestive juices, not only during the acute phase of their illness but also for a longtime afterwards. In addition, he never saw a cancer victim that had a healthy intestinal flora ... Thus, the different lacto-fermented foods are a valuable aid to the cancer patient. They are rich in vitamins and minerals and contain as well enzymes that cancer patients lack. Of particular value are lacto-fermented beets, which have a very favourable effect on disturbed cellular function. Many scientific studies have demonstrated that beets have a regenerating effect on the body. Annelies Schoneck. 08.01.2022 We’re so happy to see Wiz receiving this. Just fantastic and it couldn’t go to a more deserving recipient.

07.01.2022 Having spent the majority of my life living in the historic town of Camden, I was so saddened yesterday to hear that a fire had destroyed yet another of the beautiful historic buildings in the main street. . I remember this building so well. It was called the Whiteman’s Building and it housed our town’s ‘department store’ where you could buy pretty much anything you needed all under the one roof. Stores like this are a thing of the past because now we have ‘specialty’ stores ...for single items, because who knew we needed 379 different choices of shoe style in 14 different colours and 7 different materials. . . Many years ago this department store closed it’s doors, became an arcade and was divvied up into lots of smaller spaces for said specialty shops. . But one space that kept most of it’s original character was the upstairs portion of the building. It subsequently became a restaurant, and in its most recent years was transformed into ‘Upstairs at Fred’s’. . Upstairs at Fred’s was the brainchild of my old friend Wiz, and it embodied everything that was him. I remember running into him downtown on one of our early return visits to Camden where he excitedly told us of a new venture he was about to embark on. Over the years Wiz has had many businesses, but in the 35 years I’ve known him I’d never seen him filled with as much passion and excitement as he was with this one. . And for the first time since its inception, we finally got to visit it upon our last return journey north. It was everything I imagined it would be - a warm welcoming space for people to sit and gather whilst admiring his lifetime collection of antiques, rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia and all his other groovy bits n bobs. . What a loss! . My heart goes out to Wiz, the Whiteman family, and all the other business owners affected. . . @upstairsatfreds . . . #upstairsatfreds #whitemansbuilding #argylestreet #camden #camdenfire #2020cankissmyass #2020 #farawayfarm See more

06.01.2022 . A few years ago I bought @farawayfarm_chris a ticket to a weekend beekeeping course. He loved it!! . Since then, he has made his own topbar hive out of reclaimed pallet wood and other recycled materials. .... And then he waited, and waited, and waited for either a swarm to capture or for some bees to take up residence of their own accord. . Last weekend he finally got a call from one of our neighbours to say they had a swarm at their place. He raced up, captured it in a box, brought it home and introduced them to his hive. . Here they are now, one week later, making comb to fill with honey. SUCCESS!!! . And Mr Beekeeper himself is like a kid in a candy store. . . . #bees #beekeeping #beekeepingnaturally #kenyantopbarhive #futurehoney #happyhappyjoyjoy #farawayfarm See more

05.01.2022 . Today we did our biggest burn yet. So far we’ve done fairly easy burns on mostly open grassy patches, nothing too scrubby, just so we can get a feel for what it’s like to actually burn Country. But today was a much tougher project. Today we planned to tackle the portion closest to our assets with the highest risk of bushfire; the north western slope. It was a little nerve-racking because the fuel load was quite high and there are also stands of stringy bark trees which have... highly flammable bark. Yep, I was nervous but also excited. . So we prepared the site as best we could, clearing as much litter away from the base of the trees as we could, and putting in containment lines. We also had one of the local RFS trucks here just in case the fire got a little too active. All went mostly according to plan but as feared, the stringies got a little bit too hot and the flames took off up the tree so they needed a good hosing down on a couple of occasions. But other than that, all went beautifully and we got the job done. . Cultural Burning isn’t just about reducing bushfire risk, it’s also about regenerating the land. It will be fascinating to see what comes back up on that slope over the next few months. . Special thanks to all our wonderful helpers today, especially that lovely young man from the Brogo RFS who was on point with that fire hose - @branson_harris . . . #culturalburning #culturalburn #coolburning #coolburn #caringforcountry #indigenousknowledge #farawayfarm @ Brogo, New South Wales, Australia See more

01.01.2022 . This burn went so beautifully this afternoon. . . Because for the majority of the time I’m on my own, I only conduct small area burns. Hubby is usually close by to lend a hand if needed, but I’m proud to say that so far I have managed perfectly well on my own. . .... I truly love conducting these Cultural Burns. I find doing them so empowering, especially after the summer we’ve just had. Unbelievably, our little patch here in the Bega Valley remained one of the very few areas of bushland that was left unscathed by the fires so I feel we owe it to the universe to do everything within our power to keep this little piece of paradise protected and cared for. . . Every time I light a fire I am truly grateful for the Indigenous knowledge that was shared with me so that I too can care for Country. . . . #culturalburning #coolburn #indigenousknowledge #caringforcountry #blacksummer #wildfireprevention #bushfireprotection #farawayfarm See more
