25.01.2022 Backtracking to Gondar, we visit Debre Birhan church, wander through the Camelot-like Royal Enclosure, and stroll through the bustling Saturday market

22.01.2022 It was a very moving experience to witness this age old ceremony of priests chanting, drumming and swaying as they praised Saint Emmanuel

22.01.2022 Gathering wild honey... an age old tradition. For generations young men have braved the heights to gather honey from bee hives placed high in trees. Today we were lucky to witness a local man climb a tree using just a length of rope and carrying a bundle of burning moss and a stiff leather pouch to collect about a kilogram of honey. Giant Hagenia abyssinica trees attract bees which produce a pure, sweet honey that is a delight to behold (and eat!).

21.01.2022 From Lalibela we fly north to Axum. The Axumite kingdom was the earliest seat of power of ancient Abyssinia/Ethiopia, with notables such as the Queen of Sheba and Kings Ezana and Saizana (who, in the 4th century AD made Ethiopia the first African country and one of the first globally, to formally adopt Christianity).

21.01.2022 Driving west from Axum, we visit the ancient site of Yeha, where a German archaeological team is studying a remarkably well preserved 6th century BC pagan temple. We stay two nights at the beautiful Korkor Lodge near Hawzen, and visit several 10th and 11th century AD monolithic and semi-monolithic rock-hewn cliff-side churches which predate the much larger and more impressive 12th century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.

19.01.2022 At Bete Mariam (Church of Saint Mary) we had front row seats during the ceremony when priests and monks chanted outside this remarkable 12th century monolithic rock-hewn church. The open area shown - once solid rock - is about 15-20 metres below the surface of the living rock

19.01.2022 A fantastic day walking along the top of the escarpment in the Simien Mountains National Park, encountering several groups of Gelada 'baboon' (they resemble baboon but are actually not..) and other wildlife

19.01.2022 Blame climate change, or the locusts (!) or the simple fact that two days of overcast and rainy weather over Dire Dawa (eastern Ethiopia) put the kybosh on our plans to spend a couple of days in the ancient walled city of Harar - Islam's fourth most important city. Instead, and after a day and a half of frustration sitting at Addis airport hoping for a flight to Dire Dawa, we drive south via the Tiya stelae field to Lake Langano, one of the many Rift Valley lakes that bisects the country... Shala Abjiyata National Park covers the two lakes of the same name (Shala and Abjiyata) which are a birders paradise. Grants gazelle, warthog and numerous birds including Somali ostrich, lesser flamingo, maribou stork, common vulture, hammerkopf, various hornbills...

16.01.2022 Over the next couple of days we visited many of the iconic rock-hewn monolithic and semi-monolithic churches at Lalibela, mingling with the devoted masses who had travelled from far and wide to attend the Christmas celebrations. One morning we visited the Church of Saint George, the last church to be carved out of the living rock by King Lalibela. On our final morning the pre-dawn, post-Christmas ceremony at the Church of Saint Mary drew as many as 200,000 people into and around the church to see the massed ranks of bishops, clerics & scholars, priests & monks wearing gold & silver brocaded, white & black & red robes, crowns and carrying brocaded and tassled colourful umbrellas process around the church carrying religeous artworks to the acclaim and repeated ululation of the crowds... an incredibly moving and memorable experience

15.01.2022 Ecompassing Ethiopia's second highest peak (Tulu Dimtu, at 4,377m), the high Sanetti Plateau (average altitude 4,000m) and the lower Harena 'cloud forests', we spend the next two days exploring Bale Mountain National Park in search of the rare Ethiopian wolf (and the common Mole rat they feed on), Menelik Bush Buck, Olive baboon, Colobus monkey, myriad birdlife including the Augur Buzzard and Exclamatory Whybah (with its incredibly long tail), and generally enjoy the unrushed way of life deep inside this beautiful alpine National Park

14.01.2022 Foraging Gelada

08.01.2022 Driving through Oromo country we are in a distinctly different part of Ethiopia to what we have seen in the north. We enter the Bale Mountains National Park and traverse the high Sanetti Plateau to Bale Mountains Lodge for a three night stay. Along the way we see several mountain Nyala, a shy Francopan with chicks, and some beautiful high altitude scenery...

04.01.2022 With (Orthodox) Christmas approaching we drive from Gondar via Debre Tabor and the 'gender equality' community of Awra Amba to Lalibela... home of many 12th century semi- and fully monolithic rock-hewn churches
