23.01.2022 Interesting read, be careful on the phone.

21.01.2022 From a friend of ours - BEWARE: Just received an interesting piece of SCAM mail, purporting to be from EnergyAustralia. Perfect rendition of a bill, *every* link showed a direct link to the real site, including "register" and "login to my account". The *only* bad link, to an attack site, was the "View my bill" link. Everything else went *exactly* where it was supposed to. Watch out people!!!

19.01.2022 NSW Police Force 8 hrs Attention Apple users!... A link distributed over social media is reportedly directing Apple users to a malicious website that will crash their Safari web browsers. The malicious website is believed to affect iPhones and iPads as well as Apple desktops and laptops. The website reportedly crashes the browser by accessing its history many times over. In some cases, the victim’s computer may need to be restarted before it can be used again, which may cause the victim to lose any unsaved documents they have open.

17.01.2022 Just a little heads up, I received an email this morning from no [email protected] It appears to be a scam, it is not an AU address. Be careful out there, when in doubt, close the email and go to the site through your browser, DO NOT click on the link in the email.

15.01.2022 Two lessons in a week. When you buy a computer make sure you get what you paid for - one customer paid for an I7 laptop (almost $1000) and took home an I5 (around $150 cheaper) - the store apologised for the mistake and swapped the machine. Another customer with a new machine had a problem activating McAfee. So they Googled McAfee's phone number and called - it wasn't McAfee. The bogus operators got access to the machine and all that implies! Fortunately this was spotted quickly, rogue software was removed, banks and police contacted, passwords changed etc. Everything good except the customer lost their $400.

14.01.2022 Christmas is coming, make sure you back up all your festive photos from your phone so that they don't go into the big, black hole.

13.01.2022 Not quite IT related but something to be aware of. Mum received her mobile phone bill this week and it had almost doubled. When we checked out the reason with the phone company we discovered that she had, supposedly, been playing some texting game/competition with a group called Mobile Magic. The theory is they send you a text with a question and you text the answer back, you are supposed to have a chance to win a prize. Each text they send you costs you $6.60. There is no way Mum was playing these games or responding in any way, I'm not even sure she can get to her texts without help. So keep an eye on your mobile accounts, if you get anything that looks dodgy type STOP if you don't want to continue and be careful what you click on when playing on line games.

12.01.2022 Ransom virus are doing the rounds again. This makes it very important to have separate back ups of you information AND to be very very careful when dealing with e-mails.

09.01.2022 Just a note for people to be aware of. Over the past couple of weeks I would have had 5 phone calls purporting to be from Telstra claiming that we were behind on our bills and they wanted immediate payment over the phone. This is a scam, as are the people that call about a car accident in the past couple of years. DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS OR LOG ON TO YOUR COMPUTER AND FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS. Hang up and ignore their advice. Good luck.

08.01.2022 Great quality coats, love them

07.01.2022 Free, useful and legal. If you have ever saved a document and then not been able to find it, try UltraSearch (https://www.jam-software.com/ultrasearch/). I've used it for over 3 years and it's helped me on many occasions and it does not kill the performance of my (old) computer.

06.01.2022 Money for nothing! Microsoft’s basic Office offering (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is around $80 per year or you can get an outright licence for around $250. For most home users that’s a waste of money. Softmaker (a German software company established 1987) have ‘Freeoffice’ which for home users is FREE and supported. ... FreeOffice consists of Textmaker (Word), PlanMaker (Excel) and Presentations (PowerPoint) and can open and save documents in Microsoft format. This means users can share documents, spreadsheets and presentation transparently with MS Office users*. Don’t believe it check out http://www.freeoffice.com//discov/freeoffice-windows-linux *Note: you must change the settings to save in MS Office format for each app but once done it can be forgotten.

06.01.2022 SCAM ALERT Scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details, Stay Smart Online says. The scam... starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare benefits and claims. If you click on the link in the email you are taken a replica of the real myGov website. You’ll note the URL includes ‘.net’ instead of ‘.gov.au’, which is an indication the website is not a legitimate Australian Government domain! If you input your login details you are directed to also enter your secret security question and answer, before you’re taken to the fake Medicare website to input your bank account details. These emails and web pages feature myGov and Medicare design and branding, making them appear legitimate. Remember, clicking on the link and sharing your details gives these scammers access to your personal information, which they then use to steal your money and identity!

04.01.2022 The English in the email is not very good but if you are just skimming it you may not notice. Keep your eyes open .

01.01.2022 Trouble with the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 (KB4015438)? People find it takes a long time and often fails. If you have this problem go to https://support.microsoft.com and search for 'Windows update troubleshooter' and run the Microsoft Fixit program. If it still fails call for help.
