24.01.2022 STEP 3 - KNOW - THE BUSH FIRE ALERT LEVELS

23.01.2022 A very high fire danger has been forecast for tomorrow. All permits are automatically suspended. If you’ve recently conducted pile burns you must ensure that they are fully extinguished.

23.01.2022 Today marks International Women’s Day & we continue to recognise the contribution that our female members of the NSW RFS make to the community. Farmborough Heights Rural Fire Brigade are very proud that across our 44 Operational Members, we have 6 ladies who make themselves available to protect the community. We also extend our thanks to the long list of ladies who support our members (Wives / Partners / Daughters etc), as without your support we could not effectively fulfill... our commitments. Thank-you ladies for your ongoing service, commitment & support to our brigade & the NSW Rural Fire Service.

22.01.2022 Communities across the country will today pause and remember all those around the world who have lost their lives during conflict. Please join us at 11:00am for a minute of silence to remember. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning... We will remember them. Lest we forget.

22.01.2022 Severe Weather Warning - UPDATE HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING may develop overnight and continue Saturday. Locations which may be affect...ed include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Batemans Bay, Canberra and Goulburn. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. * After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. For the full warning please see the BOM website: http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN21037.shtml

14.01.2022 Today marks 40 years since five young lives were tragically lost battling a bush fire at Waterfall. It was 3rd November 1980 - just before 5am crews were aler...ted to a bush fire burning near McKell Avenue. Numerous brigades responded to the southern end of the Royal National Park, working to contain a large fire which was burning under mild conditions. The conditions on the day were cool, the temperature reached 19c, humidity was low and southerly winds prevailed. As the southerly winds increased in strength late afternoon, the fire transitioned from the forested area into heath, increasing the intensity and spread. The fire rapidly headed in a northerly direction towards the Uloola trail. It was on this trail where a fire tanker from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade was overrun by fire. It was at this location where five brave firefighters were lost - Steve Crunkhorn, 26, Gregory Rolfe, 24, Vernon Stedman, 21, William Cummings, 21 and David Marshall, 19. The fire was contained days later after burning 2,246 hectares of the Royal National Park. We remember these brave firefighters.

13.01.2022 As of today, you will begin to see different alert level icons in platforms such as Fires Near Me NSW and on the NSW RFS website. Why the change? As part of a n...ational intitiative, and in line with a recommendation of the NSW Bushfire Inquiry, the NSW RFS is implementing components of the Australian Warning System, including new icons and colour schemes to communicate incidents and warnings to the community. What does this mean for me? In NSW, this means changes to the icons used for Advice, Watch and Act and Emergency Warning. Over time, these alert levels and icons will apply to other hazards, bringing a greater level of consistency. Check https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//gen/australian-warnings-system and familiarise yourself with the new system. #nswrfs #nswfires #PrepareActSurvive

11.01.2022 Preparation isn't just about cleaning up around the house and having a bush fire survival plan. It's also about making sure you consider your physical, mental and emotional preparedness. A bush fire can be a terrifying situation. Strong gusty winds, intense heat and flames will make you tired quickly. Thick heavy smoke will sting your eyes and choke your lungs. It will be difficult to see and breathe.... The roaring sound of the fire approaching could be frightening. Embers will rain down, causing spots fires all around you. Power and water may be cut off. You may be isolated, and it will be dark, noisy and extremely demanding both mentally and physically. If you have any doubts about your ability to cope, you should plan to leave early, well before a fire reaches your area and well before you are under threat. People who are at higher risk, such as children, elderly, disabled or with medical problems, should always leave early. Leaving early is always your safest option.
