25.01.2022 For Western Australia’s early settlers, a hotel was more than just a place for meals and accommodation; it was the heart of their community and played host to its social events and meetings. It was also a welcoming space where isolated settlers could meet others in similar circumstances and share ideas, assistance and companionship. When The Farmers Home Hotel emerged in 1866 from a small wayside General Store these were the needs it met for the Northam community. A variet...y of influences, such as agriculture, the railways and the gold rush combined to change Northam over the years, and alter what the community required from the Hotel. Each time, it evolved with the town as Northam grew from a small country settlement in to an important regional centre. Whilst in recent decades the quality and reputation of this Fitzgerald Street landmark may have wavered, this week saw a bold new chapter in the life of the place. It has been with great joy that we have watched an outpouring of love from our local community put a resounding beat back into the heart of this treasured icon. Opening in the last few days was our café a new place of welcome and comfort for everyone to gather daily from dawn until well after dusk. Complementing this, in the coming weeks is a beautiful gentle wine bar and a collection of world-class boutique hotel suites. The Farmers’ Home Hotel once again to become a much-loved place for locals and visitors to Northam to work, rest, meet, play and stay.

21.01.2022 In the late 1800’s the boisterous Farmers’ Home Hotel in Northam succumbed to the pressure of the burgeoning Temperance Movement and signed a pledge to drop the booze and only sell aerated waters and cordials. It was a disastrous move which sent the place broke and into the hands of the next owner who promptly reinstated the liquor license. Our new Temperance Bar at the Farmers’ Home has kept the liquor flowing but we’ve shared the pledge propaganda, The Drunkard’s Progress... on the wall as an ever so gentle reminder that you should enjoy the fruits of our classy little wine bar..in moderation. From this afternoon, The Temperance Bar at the Farmers’ Home Hotel will be open every day from 3pm daily until late-ish with access from both Fitzgerald Street and Minson Avenue. There’s a tapas menu and a wonderful selection of drinks to enjoy inside or on the rear alfresco terrace overlooking the Avon foreshore. Balmy wheatbelt evenings have never felt better.

21.01.2022 As current custodians of a truly special locations, rich in history and heritage, our responsibility is to honour the buildings, the communties in which they reside, and allow their stories to shine. We undertook these journeys, not for awards or acknowledgment, but to attract tourists and locals alike, providing places of welcome and comfort that serve as unique base camps from which to explore the surrounding regions. Having said that, we're thrilled that collaborative effo...rt between ourselves, spaceagency: architects and Michael Ogilby and his team at Masterbuilt has attracted such praise, and earned a place for both Farmers’ Home Hotel - Northam and Premier Mill Hotel - Katanning in tomorrows Season Final of Hotelsbydesign. Tune in for the Finale at 2.30pm AEST tomorrow, Sunday Oct 4, Channel 10, or vote for your favourite hotel in the People's Choice Awards at https://hotelsbydesign.com/peoples-choice-award/

17.01.2022 O’Hara had the silverware shining when Premier Forrest dropped in for the opening of Northam's train line to the goldfields. Also in the party, was top hat aficionado Frederick Piesse, the Minister for Railways and owner of Premier Flour Mill - Katanning

13.01.2022 Plans out, heads down and an early start for Project Manager Nic and the team.

07.01.2022 The journey of refurbishing the Farmers' Home Hotel was a true collaboration with spaceagency: architects. Rather than looking to 'add' elements, the focus was on sensitively paring back, allowing the glory of the building and its story to be revealed sensibly. This process, a passionate labour of love, is featured this Sunday September 13 at 2.30pm by Hotelsbydesign on Channel 10, so please tune in and join us.

05.01.2022 Our hotel started out in life as a small general store. Established in 1860 by James Lever Ainsworth, it was Northam's first such store and de facto post office. This small wattle and daub cottage was then expanded into a larger stone building which the enterprising Ainsworth then soon advertised for sale as being well suitable (but not yet approved) for a Public House. This was the perfect opportunity for a young man as ambitious as Mr George Throssell. On purchasing the st...ore he secured a Colonial Wine License which limited him only to the sale of wines as part of the general store business. With this secured he lobbied hard the local Magistrate for it to be upgraded to that of a Public House...and with that hard fought and won over a couple of years... The Farmers' Home Hotel was born in 1866. With the status of a Hotel came further expansion with new lodging rooms, parlours, kitchens, pantries and extra stabling. "The Farmers' Home" as it was soon fondly known became a vibrant focal point both locals and and those visiting the burgeoning town of Northam. In the last few weeks we've been delighted to have our Cafe and Temperance Bar once again do a little bit of what "The Farmers' Home" did for the town in 1866..... And just like back in 1866 we are now eagerly anticipating the imminent launch of our beautiful new hotel rooms. We think Ainsworth and Throssell would be looking over us with great pride. Stay close to our Facebook posts and you'll be sure to soon learn when and how you can make a booking to come stay with us at the all new 'Farmers' Home Hotel'.

03.01.2022 We've been busy with the finishing touches to the Premier Mill Hotel, located down the road in Katanning. Northam, you're next!

02.01.2022 In 1873 then owner George Christmass advertised the Farmers' Home Hotel for sale, boasting the rear as equipped with a "store, a stable for six horses, and hay rooms" all enclosed "by a good jam fence". For most of the past 154 years, however, the rear of the hotel was a neglected storage area, or stables for horses or beer kegs. In addition to our extensive refurbishment of the hotel’s front, which has always been pride of place, we’ve also reinvigorated the rear, creating ...a podium to survey the magnificent foreshore of the Avon. Connecting the Avon with the main street of town, this is a warm and welcoming shared-space that also connects our Café with our Wine Bar, and is open for your enjoyment daily from 6am until late.

02.01.2022 O’Hara, could finance this construction work thanks to a little Goldfields sideline of carting out supplies and charging the miners a premium. In one year alone he made what today would be $250’000!
