25.01.2022 Librarian takeover of Beekeeper Socials. Chapter Four. Talking Weeds. Weeds are the close friend of the beekeeper. The Beekeeper can spot and name weeds from miles away and he is often more excited by the weeds flowering UNDER a crop, than the actual flowering crop on a farm. Crops provide a single source of pollen and nectar for bees but when you add in the weeds you have a smorgasbord and very.happy.bees. Happy bees + multiple food sources mean honey flow and great hive health. So that old saying is true, ‘a weed is just a plant in the wrong place’. The Beekeeper stops by the roadside to admire weeds as often as he does to check buds on native trees. It’s why national parks are so brilliant for bees diversity of species.

23.01.2022 Swapping the bush for beach the last week or so and spending time with my two small bees and the Children's Books Daily girl gang. The smallest bee is off to prep in a few weeks which he (and I ) are excited about.

21.01.2022 Librarian takeover of Beekeeper Socials. Chapter Six. Spot the Queen. As a librarian I take my ‘Where’s Wally’ books very seriously and they are some of the most popular books in the library. I would like to suggest that Spot the Queen could be the next bestselling series of ‘spot the’ books. Spot the queen was played for 8-10 hours straight by The Beekeeper last week, for several days in a row. I have discovered this is why he is endlessly patient and calm. Spotting queens ...is a skill and an art and patience is the name of the game. Teachers requires moving, reacting and pivoting a lesson super fast. Beekeeping requires gentle movement of frames, steady hands, attention to detail, planning, process, patience (again) and persistence. I suspect I will never master the art of queen spotting as I’ve never had the patience for the ‘Where’s Wally’ in the library. See more

15.01.2022 Like the seasons, the extractors turn. The hum of the machine. The rattle of the uncapper. The sound of classic hits on the radio*. The honey flows. * unappreciated by my teen offsiders .

14.01.2022 The holiday is over but there’s still the drive home. Like dad did to us, always slowly down and checking country while out driving . Driving with beekeepers : ‘Kids! If you look out the window to your right you’ll see National Park country - which is how the Australian bush looked before we turned much of it into the LEFT side of the road - which is pine plantation for IKEA-ish products, chipboard and paper. We COULD have had the beautiful Scribbly Gums to the right but ...instead we cleared and burned this land and introduced animals we should not have. I’d take the National Park side of the road anyday.’ (kids have not tuned into any of this as always )

12.01.2022 Librarian takeover of Beekeeper Socials. Chapter Five. What is Re-Queening? Why replace the queen you ask? Beekeepers are constantly checking on the health and production of their hives and for optimum colony health and management, the queen in commercial beehives is replaced every 12 18 months as strong and healthy colonies resist pests and disease, pollinate like champions and produce honey. Queen bees are purchased from queen breeders and they arrive in queen cages whic...h are quite adorable. Finding the existing queen in a hive requires patience but apparently you become an expert at it (this librarian is not an expert - in fact I am very annoyed at my lack of queen spotting prowess). Once the queen is located, she is usually moved to a nuc (nucleus) box to start a new baby hive. The new queen is inserted between the frames, still in her queen cage. Here is the coolest bitTHERE IS A SUGAR PLUG on one end of the queen cage, keeping her in the cage for a few days. The bees in the hive eat through the sugar plug and by the time they have done this, they are familiar with their new queen and generally accept her. *Mind blown*.

12.01.2022 Librarian takeover of Beekeeper Socials. Chapter Three. I have never quite understood the sheer wonder of the bee suit. The first time I went to a bee site I was in jeans and a t-shirt and that ended with me jumping around and asking someone I’d just met to get bees out of my shirt. It was beginners over-confidence on my part - and not wanting to give up my city jeans for sensible work jeans bee stings up my shirt have made me rethink the clothing. So NOW I may look like I’...m about to enter a pandemic ward or visit the moon but I shall never again question The Beekeeper on the wonder of the bee suit. This one I am wearing is a ventilated suit from Quality Beekeeping Supplies. The first layer is a cotton mesh, the second layer is like a thin foam and the third layer is again cotton mesh; providing a 4mm thickness away from the skin. Which is exactly what you want when you upset a hive (I took far too long finding the queen) and you have bees ALL OVER YOU. In fact, surrounded by 100 hives in a bee yard, you always have bees ALL OVER YOU. Go the bee suit. See more

12.01.2022 Bumblebee wine...it was meant to bee. See what I did there ? Bees are soooooooo on trend now which is sooooooo different to when I started out and people would say ‘you left corporate finance to be a BEEKEEPER?’.

11.01.2022 Librarian takeover of Beekeeper Socials. Chapter Two. I’ve been out with Murray Arkadieff AKA The Beekeeper a number of times to bee sites and I’m always struck by the silence and serenity of the bush particularly at night which is when hive moving work happens. I work in a school and sometimes I talk to hundreds of people in a day. For beekeepers, the constant hum of bees and the occasional bird or cow is IT and they may not talk to anyone for an entire day imagine! Do... beekeepers ever stop and appreciate the tranquillity of their workplace? I am gaining quite the insight into the physicality of the job these days and there is little time for admiring the surroundings, but my goodness, sometimes I think beekeepers should stop and breathe in the wonder of their workplace. It beats a school bell and the rabble of the playground any day! See more
