23.01.2022 We’ve certainly entered the Hungry Gap, that time of year when many winter crops start to bolt in the garden, most spring plants are still babies in the ground and even though we’re waiting expectantly for warmth the weather is still decidedly fickle. It’s also sometimes called ‘winter’s long shadow’, a darkly poetic description of the season... It’s lucky then, that we can be assured of locally grown vegies even now: our talented teams of vegetable growers are clever enough to keep us fed with careful crop placements and planting calendars. It’s all about brassicas, greens, herbs, leeks, rhubarb, chard, spinach and the end of the winter’s root vegetables at the moment. (Look out for broad beans in the coming weeks.) 15.01.2022 It's been a rough road over the past seven months. From googling what is a pandemic? in February to creating COVID-19 safety plans in March, this year has kept us on our toes. Farm Gate Drive-Thru became our COVID contingency plan. We needed a way to get fresh, local produce to a community in isolation, and to maintain our connection to our Bathurst Street hub. We needed a job to keep our team busy - and employed and to provide another avenue for our local Producers to g...et produce safely to their customers. It has to be said, the success of the Drive-Thru has meant the survival of the Sunday market, too, and for that we are so grateful. .. and it’s the power of a community that's seen us overcome the challenges 2020 has thrown at us. As we wrap up our last Drive-Thru this arvo, we’d like thank some very special people: our amazing, supportive customers; our dedicated, flexible Producers; Kylie our fab graphic designer at Stokely 9 Design; the inimitable photographs by Chris Crerar - photography & writing; the Hobart City Council for their endorsement + encouragement; Marg and family from Penna Valley Farm and Richard + Co from The Westerway Raspberry Farm who humbled us with loan of their fruit crates for packing; and our fabulous Bathurst Street neighbours who let us turn the street into an epic drive-thru operation in the blink of an eye. We’re sad that it’s coming to close today; we know many of you have come to love and rely on it. What we also know, however, is that we can have this baby up and running again within a week should it be required we’ll be ready for you, Hobart. 09.01.2022 Tonight we are lighting up Franklin Square + our Farmy HQ in red to throw our support behind We Make Events Australia which is on Red Alert to raise awareness of Australia's highly skilled event professionals who have no work, in what has become an industry decimated by Covid. This industry that we are so lucky to work in includes a huge supply chain ranging from production, audio, lighting and video, to logistics, planning, transportation, as well as leading technology ...manufacturers who have had no work since mid-March and are unlikely to restart again until well into mid 2021. Without additional support for the supply chain, Australia is in danger of losing its global position as a leader in world-class events. Moreover, all of our incredible creatives and technicians could lose their livelihoods for good. We at Peattie Events have been very fortunate to be able to at least operate Farm Gate Market in some capacity during Covid, and are currently working on a Covid-safe Street Eats Franko however, this is not the case for most of our industry. In light of this #WeMakeEventsAus are calling for meaningful support from the Government until the industry is allowed to operate in a way that is not limited by social distancing policies. See more

09.01.2022 Attending from their Hagley farm this week is Hazelbrae Hazelnuts. Whole roasted nuts, hazelnut oil, chocolate-covered rounds and yummy hazelnut butters (including a cocoa version) are definitely worth foraging the market for. They also sell a hazelnut flour not quite a meal, it’s actually the ground up by-product of the oil extraction process, so it’s drier and (perhaps obviously) less oily. Advice came recently from one lovely customer to absolutely Use it in a Jewish chocolate cake recipe!
