24.01.2022 With the weather giving us rain and sun the garden is producing fruit and vegetables and lots of insects. The children in Cooinda have been investigating the concept of metamorphosis with the silkworms in the classroom. Today they had the opportunity to take this learning out of the classroom when they discovered a caterpillar making a cocoon in the leaves of the peas. This led to lots of investigative questions such as what kind of caterpillar is this ?and what will the moth look like? and how long will it live? The children continued to look through the vegetable garden to see what else they could discover........lots to see. #Montessori
21.01.2022 Amaroo - Children love to cook. From the decision of what to make and gathering the ingredients (some from the garden if we can) to the joy of sharing the final dish with their friends. Children learn practical life skills in the process from using a knife safely, measuring quantities accurately to washing up when they are finished. Learning to taste and season their food even trying new foods is a bonus. To extend this interest we recently gave the children some kitchen equ...ipment and observed as they created their own cafe and made some very imaginative dishes! This process of creative play is a safe and secure way to use their imagination, to mimic adults and to practise cooperation and collaboration with their friends. It’s also great fun and to see a child offer everyone a sand muffin and be told it’s the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted by their best friend to which they reply it’s because I put a pinch of salt in! Well it just makes you smile. #Montessori See more
21.01.2022 Some students are transitioning from stage 2 to stage 3(Yani), joining us in stage 3 to prepare them for next year. We had a police talk with a Youth Liaison Officer called Robin. She explained the importance of Cyber security, bullying in general, and school safety. We talked about her job, the youths she works with and Juvenile Detention Centres. There were a lot of questions about this, we found it super interesting. All in all, it was a good chat, and we learnt a lot. Ye...p, the time of year has come. It’s nearly Christmas! We are in the middle of making our Christmas presents. We can’t tell you too much because it’s a surprise, but we are using succulents and making our own creations using polymer clay. In music we’re doing a pop/classical song. Played with keyboards, guitars, percussions, a cello (Claudia) and trumpet (Leo and Jessica). We are learning a variety of songs for our Christmas Concert! #Montessori See more
20.01.2022 We are lucky enough to have an amazing library of reference books for the children in the Amaroo Outdoor Classroom. Good nonfiction books help expand vocabulary and build real world connections. Using these books also fosters critical thinking and information gathering skills. We love learning something new every day, be that how a turtle can see under water or how does the harbour bridge not fall in the harbour. These books nourish a child’s curiosity of everything around them from an apple to a solar panel and lots in between. Children then decide how they will present their findings working in groups or alone eg making books of their own, posters, artworks, writing a story, or pretending you’re a turtle with goggles on! #Montessori
19.01.2022 We embed indigenous learning to our everyday practices. We do this in many ways such as, sharing stories, acknowledging country, listening to music, connecting to our community and appreciating how wonderful the natural world is. The Kindergarten children have been telling Dreamtime stories, which the children have enjoyed. We spoke about different places and settings of the stories. This led onto learning about sacred places around Australia and the cultural meaning behind place names. We are looking at the indigenous country names of places by using a large map. Additionally, we are making observations of colours, patterns and shapes in the Australian landscape. These are then incorporated into subjects across the curriculum. For example, writing about the colours of a river and using many adjectives. #Montessori
15.01.2022 Children learn to appreciate the natural and social world through their senses. The science related activities in the Burbangana classroom provide a hands-on learning experience that allows freedom of choice and repetition. Children choose from a variety of experiments presented to them on trays displayed on the shelf, the volcano experiment is a favourite. To this we add a natural element to their learning. We learn about life cycles of plants and animals. Over a period of time children observe a seed growing into a sunflower. At the moment our class is full of excitement as we have been watching our silkworms grow and start spinning their cocoons. Not only have they experienced learning about the lifecycle of a silk worm, they have learned skills in caring for them as well by making sure they have food to eat. #Montessori
10.01.2022 Term four is a busy term for Elouera, perhaps most importantly because many of our children will move into their new classrooms in term one next year, so this term we spend a lot of time getting ready for change. Continuity through change is key for a successful transition. Visiting other classrooms with the security of familiar educators, allows the child to develop confidence and comfort across all their environments. The transition to the 3-6 classroom is most effective when it occurs over a period of time and continues to position the child as in control, capable and independent. We want them to feel like this is something that is happening with them, not to them. This next stage of their educational journey is exciting, challenging and will provide so many opportunities and possibilities.#Montessori
08.01.2022 Elouera - One of the guiding principles of the National Quality Framework is that Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are valued throughout all education and care services. In each of the preschool classrooms, the children say an ‘acknowledgement of country’ and we pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land before each group time. In Elouera ours sounds like this; here is the land, here is the sky, here are my friends and here am I, thank you Guringai people for sharing your land #Montessor
06.01.2022 The Kindergarten children have been learning aspects of grammar. These include verbs, adjectives, articles and nouns. We have been finding these in different texts. The children made books about things they like to do and called them verb books. We also looked at homonyms, words that sound the same and synonyms. #Montessori
06.01.2022 Yani - The last week of term 3 we had a STEM challenge. We built bridges using only, 100 paddle pop sticks, glue and string. We had two tables that were separated 30cm apart and our goal was to build a bridge across the gap of the tables and hold at least one pound. All the bridges we made, managed to succeed. It was fun watching everyone’s different creations hold the weight. This term we had a company called Interrelate come and visit us to talk to the year 5’s ad 6’s about positive body image and we also had an all-girls talk on how girls’ bodies change. These talks were interesting because we got to learn about becoming a woman and how all boys and girls can think positively about their body image. #Montessori
06.01.2022 In Burbangana we recently celebrated NAIDOC week and continued our learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This year we used a Welcome Tree in the classroom to encourage a sense of belonging and togetherness. The children each had their handprint of the Aboriginal flag to hang on the tree each morning. We have also been enjoying listening to some Dreamtime stories with a favourite being about a whale, a boat, a starfish and the animals that call Australia ...home - How the animals came to Australia. We also honour children’s birthdays with a special Montessori ritual that involves a walk around the sun, represented by candles. Children bring in photos from every year of their life as a guide to discussions around the things they could do when they were one, two, three etc. The birthday child enjoys sharing their day with friends. #Montessori See more
05.01.2022 Cooinda - Lots of rain and warm weather has brought an explosion of flowers into the garden. Children are by nature curious about the world around them. Our work as educators is to take these spontaneous interests and expand them into learning opportunities. The discovery of flowers in the garden led to a presentation on parts of a flower. The flower was dissected allowing for the visual pictures and text to match the real flower. When children come in contact with nature, they reveal their strength. Mara Montessori. #Montessori
04.01.2022 A packed fortnight with Aikya back in the swing of things.Science experiments have been held in our new kitchen space, outdoor lessons have taken place to portray relative time and distance and poetry lessons and rehearsals have begun in preparation for the school Christmas Concert. Not to forget all the curriculum learnings happening every day. A notable topic covered was TimeLines, with some children opting to create and present their own depictions of time and events. Also..., we were able to depict the relative time between now and how long our Indiginouse cultures have inhabited the land. Relating to time stamps such as the birth of Jesus Christ, The Roman Empire and the Colonisation of Australia to list just a few. Music, French, Pottery and Swimming have continued to feature, with Pottery and Swimming still maintaining the hype you would expect as the children eagerly anticipate their scheduling. #Montessori See more
