21.01.2022 Loose Parts, Nature Play (& NAIDOC week reflections) Play is how our children learn, so we have a responsibility to ensure we provide holistic play opportunities and resources. We can utilise play to teach and embed important concepts such as culture, diversity, respect, connection to country and so much more! Doing so without blurring the line of tokenism can sometimes be tricky (think identical dot paintings on a didgeridoo cut out); we all want to do better & we are all ...wary of being offensive. A close friend of my family, whom is an Indigenous Elder has reassured me that from his perspective - as long as things are done with respect in the heart and with the aim of education and inclusion, then that’s ok with him, He’d rather see someone try and learn something then shy away from things with fear and never grow. It’s important for me personally to keep learning about my own culture, my own connections and Its important for me to have recognition & respect embedded in my curriculum. It’s so rich in learning opportunities and practical life skills. ... Today we walked to the park together - fun right? YES! But we also.... - collected nature goodies to be used later for crafts and loose part play - communicated with our neighbours as we walked why are you hosing? - focused on road safety and crossing roads stop, look, listen, hold hands - spotted & named colours everywhere, cars, flowers, houses - watched a package be delivered - talked allllll about bees (as we saw lots) we talked about respecting the bees & the flowers they like most - saw mummy and daddy birds feeding their baby birds in the nest and discussed bird families - stopped to watch a soil delivery and saw diggers up so close At the park we... - made new friends - had a picnic - challenged and refined our skills and tried new things - observed bees and a kookaburra - shared, took turns, negotiated - laughed & played with our friends Excursions are PRICELESS
