14.01.2022 Sorry The New York Times, you got it wrong when you referenced the widely contested findings of economist Emily Oster in your recent article, "How to Think Abou...t Pregnancy Risks." In the article, you say there's "room for argument about whether occasional light drinking is harmful in many pregnancies." We disagree that there's any room for dispute. The fact is there is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy. Even drinking at low levels can affect fetal development. This is because alcohol is a teratogen that crosses the placenta and can damage the central nervous system (including the brain) and other organs of the developing embryo/fetus. No more than two hours after maternal ingestion, the blood alcohol level of the fetus is the same as or higher than the mother's. Harmful effects from prenatal alcohol exposure have been well-documented. This includes physical birth defects and brain-based disabilities. The risks posed to the fetus increase as maternal alcohol use rises. Overall, the scientific community continues to advise that the healthiest and safest choice is to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy from conception through birth. So let us be clear, the mantra everything in moderation does not apply to alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

13.01.2022 Change of email address and website. I have a new email address [email protected]. We have decided to not renew the FASD Consultants website or the associated email address. This decision is about ease of voluntary management and greater concentration on both the FASD Tasmania and the Russell Family Fetal Alcohol Disorders Assoc (rffada) websites. You can find these websites at: FASDTasmania.com and rffada.org. Vicki
