25.01.2022 GRAD SHOW SNEAK PEEK // TUSSLE 2020 // CHRIS DE SIRA "My graduate work, Soft Yakka, is situated within conceptions of Australian masculinity and working class culture, with the aim of suggesting broader definitions of both. The collection is informed by Derridian deconstruction and plays with contrasting binaries (male/female, hard/soft, work/play) putting particular focus on the bi-directional relationship between designers of garments and wearers of garments. The garments... themselves are oversized, and lack traditional utilitarian features like pockets, but through the use of belts, harnesses, metal grommets, and attachable belts, the wearer can outfit the garments in ways that make sense to them." Tickets for the Fashion Grad Show are $20 and available now via TryBooking: https://www.trybooking.com/BMKEP RSVP via the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/789735321878381

20.01.2022 DRESS IN CONTEXT // Second Year Project Our second years are currently working on a project to design and construct a dress, through the exploration of their own ideas and visual research in relationship to qualities of cloth, manipulation of the garment form and investigation into the way that the garment moves/ behaves on the body and in space. When the dress is done, they will create a short film, performance or photographic series to investigate the relationship between t...heir garment (the dress) and the body in relationship to movement, gesture and location/ context. Here's an example of the project done by Ryan Buckley in 2014! #flashbackfriday #fashionatecu #studyfashion #artshumECU

20.01.2022 GRAD SHOW SNEAK PEEK // TUSSLE 2020 // D'ARCY COAD This year’s fashion graduate exhibition and parade will also feature a selection of work from Fashion Honours project by D’ARCY COAD; Morbid curiosities: An inquiry on abject jouissance’s relationship with garment and fashion photography... An exploration of fashion and the abject - how, expressed either deliberately or accidentally, fashion can manifest itself as an iteration of a morbid curiosity. It can delight itself and play with deathly themes, where garment can perform as a creative medium, inform nuances of the psyche and be reflective of taboo topics regarding the abject, manifesting an aura of fascination as an object. 17.01.2022 FASHION PHOTO REMAKE // HOME PROJECT This is a project that can be traced back to DADA and the Surrealists where images and photographs are reinterpreted or transformed using everyday materials or whatever is at hand. An element of immediacy and humour is present but importantly the underlying narrative and a sense of the materiality needs to be understood and transferred to the new work. We have adapted this project so it is suitable for ECU fashion students as it works with... our philosophy of creative play and developing ideas through the interaction of forms on the body in a contextual space. Check out some of the amazing remakes by our students!

16.01.2022 GRAD SHOW SNEAK PEEK // TUSSLE 2020 // JILLIAN MCHUGH My collection has its origins in zero waste garment-making and the gaze of the female body. The former is evident in my work through simple, clean shapes and lines. The latter is something that is more evident through exaggerated shoulders and textural fabrics, which form a sort of armour and rails against more traditional views of the feminine. Aesthetically the collection is minimal in colour - reduced to black and whi...te and some nude, bodily colours. Raw edges and exposed seams reveal the story of the making of the garment and add a rawness - an exposed, unfinished fragility - to the garments. #artshumecu #tussle2020 #fashionatecu

07.01.2022 GRAD SHOW 'TUSSLE' 2020 // SNEAK PEEK // JESS EMERY "From the moment I began walking, Mum had me wandering local landscapes pointing out all of the surprising and colourful shapes our native bushland offered. Ducking and diving under logs, being careful not to disturb a little critters home helped create a delightfully playful and curious time for exploration of our environment. Stemming from four generations of women in my family who collect, protect and propagate WA wildflowers, it felt only natural to pursue such unique textures and colours in my own textile work. My designs are simple, yet they grow through hidden and surprising layers covered in unique textures, bold prints illustrated with those youthful influences and finished with embellishment from all sorts of childhood crafts..."

04.01.2022 GRAD SHOW SNEAK PEEK // TUSSLE 2020 // ALICE WIAME "A fitted coat and a corset were my starting point as I considered the way that women’s bodies have been moulded, shaped and idealised through time. As I began to think more about the delicacy of the inner body I sought to make garments that were freer and show a narrative of release from forms that contain and control. My French background has greatly influenced the demeanour of my collection, which I hope carries these the...mes with a classic grace and poise..." 01.01.2022 GRAD SHOW SNEAK PEEK // TUSSLE 2020 // JANET NJOROGE "I am interested in reflecting relationships between the outer and inner self and feelings of vulnerability and (in)visibility I feel adjusting to living as an African woman in a predominantly white country. Layering of fluid fabrics printed with my own flower designs form inner garments, speak of a spilling, escaping out, seeking connection, beauty and visibility, which reflects my experiences. The outer layers, constructe...d with more rigid fabrics, portray a strong, protective guide, containing and holding the vulnerable layer beneath."
