10.01.2022 Todays First Aid For Life tip is about demystifying the use of defibrillators With defibs being increasingly accessible for public use, it's important that we uncover some of the common questions surrounding defibs: 1. ANYONE, with or without training, can use a defib in a time of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Never be afraid to use one!... 2. Defibs may appear confusing or technical to use, but it is important that you do not hesitate to use it. Most public defibs have extremely clear instructions and verbal prompts to walk you through the process. 3. ANY ATTEMPT at CPR and use of a defib is better than no attempt. 4. CPR is a critical step when using a defib - It is important that you know how to perform CPR for the best chance of survival. Remember, 30 compressions : 2 breaths. Check out our range of defibs here fastaid.link/defibrillators Watch our helpful video tutorials using our defibs here fastaid.link/aedtraining Share this post with family and friends in case the worst should happen. #firstaidforlife #fastaid

10.01.2022 FIRST AID MYTH & TRUTH MYTH: Use the Heimlich maneuver for choking. This is a tricky one! The Heimlich (abdominal thrusts) is no longer recommended as the method of responding to choking. Why? If done incorrectly, there is considerable evidence of harm caused by this procedure. Therefore it is not recommended as the method of responding to choking.... TRUTH: When an adult or child over 1 is choking: + Encourage a strong, effective cough. + If the patient is unable to cough to dislodge the object, call 000. + Proceed to perform 5 back blows - Lean the patient forward and using the heel of your palm give 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades (checking for dislodgement of the object after each back blow). + If this is ineffective, proceed to give 5 chest thrusts (not abdominal thrusts) - Place one hand in the middle of the patient’s back for support and heel of the other hand in the CPR compression position, checking if the object is dislodged after each thrust. + Continue alternating between 5 back blows and chest thrusts until help arrives, or begin CPR if the patient becomes unconscious. #fastaidchat #firstaid #fastaid
