07.01.2022 THE DOG YOU NEED "I adopted Lemmy from a rescue at 18 months old. He settled into our home quite well but outside of the home he soon showed me some concerning ...behaviours. Lemmy was extremely reactive to other dogs on lead, from a great distance he would lunge and scream. He was also very vigilant always on the look out it was clear he was very uncomfortable and did not enjoy being outside of the home. We worked on a series of programs including loose leash walking, counterconditioning other dogs and obedience but the main focus of Lemmy's rehabilitation had to be confidence building and relaxation. It was very clear I had to show him that he could count on me to keep him safe and have confidence in himself to cope outside the house. Lemmy obviously had a sad start to life he has two damaged ears, he had an infection in his lower lip from a dog bite that has left a scar and a chronic flea infection that affected his coat badly, it took at least six months for his whiskers to grow in after he came to live with us. In the words of the awesome Brent from The K9 Company "See that story F&%$ that story!!" Many dwell on a dog’s back story and make excuses for their behaviours for the rest of their lives. He’s my dog not a rescue dog I am responsible for his training and behaviour. Lemmy is one of the most enthusiastic learners I have ever met!! I am able to teach him new things in just a few sessions. Lemmy knows multiple tricks, he can ride a skateboard, open and shut a door just to name a few and he helped me pass my substance detection certificate. Through working at Canine Connect I have gained knowledge and access to resources I need to help Lemmy with his issues, he now happily goes outside of his home with confidence and enjoys activities that used to terrify him he even comes to work with me and relaxes in our classroom with other dogs. He contributes to our household happiness no end, he is a goofball funny boy!! I love the bones of this dog, he’s taught me so much. Lemmy’s training is not complete nor will it ever be, but I know he has a great foundation and a the confidence he needs to be the best dog he can be." - Trainer Jo #dogyouneed #ignitethechange
