24.01.2022 I wanted to write about this topic based on my recent experience purchasing a pair of running shoes. What was interesting about the experience is that the sales person spent their entire time discussing the latest in shock absorption heel technology and how this was the difference between a $100 pair of shoes and a $250 pair of shoes. It had me thinking about running technique and how the more shock absorption we apply to shoes, the more our running technique diverges from how we originally evolved to run (quite successfully if you review the history of Human running evolution, well covered in an entertaining read Born to Run by Christopher McDougall). 19.01.2022 Recent editorial in my local paper - The Regional Independent (29 July 2020). As someone well into my 50’s, and who has had a focus on fitness and exercise for the majority of my life, I was keen to see if it was possible to extend my physical fitness as far into my older age as possible. This lifelong obsession has culminated in the establishment of Fatch Fitness with the business ( [ 240 more words ] https://fatchfitness.com//fatch-fitness-40yrs-comes-to-bu/

18.01.2022 Today’s article takes a look at the current High-Intensity functional training craze known as Crossfit. Crossfit originated in the USA in 2000 and is promoted as a holistic exercise philosophy incorporating elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, kettlebell training, calisthenics, strongman, and other exercises. In principle, this training methodology seems sound except that within the range of exercises that participants are expected to undertake, there are many exercises that would be classified as highly specialised (Olympic Lifts) with a high injury rate factor (Plyometrics) which can be further exacerbated by adding excessive fatigue to the routine (High Intensity Interval Training). 17.01.2022 What is Kinesiology and why it is so important for the PT? As someone who has the opportunity to assist up and coming trainers on a path that will ensure they excel at this role, I strongly promote three main aspects of exercise science that I believe is absolutely fundamental in performing this role at the standard that should be expected by all clients. 1. A strong understanding of basic anatomy (muscle names and where they are situated on the body).... 2. What joint movements take place and what muscles cause those movements. 3. What exercises are prescribed to train these muscles. The second point is what is termed Kinesiology An official definition is: Kinesiology is the scientific study of human or non-human body movement. (Wikipedia)....... 17.01.2022 This article discusses how most of the Core training we do is for initiation and not for controlling and limited ROM but how most of the injuries come from the controlling aspect of contraction and extreme ROM through the core. Controlling Functionality: When we look at the functionality of the core (or any muscle for that matter), there are two main functions or roles that muscle plays: [ 827 more words ] https://fatchfitness.com//the-core-eccentric-loading-rang/

14.01.2022 I am a fan of the traditional lunge movement, but I am sure I am not alone in saying that lunging causes me more DOMS in my adductors than any other exercise that I undertake. I fondly remember running a session 20-years ago whereby I had all my athletes building up their walking lunge distance from 20m to 100m. I had a very keen student join me on this particular session and ignoring my warning, he joined in with my group and completed a couple of repetitions of 100m lunges. 09.01.2022 If you are capable of any form of running >40 yrs of age, then this is an excellent way of maintaining quality bone density and a high level of aerobic conditioning. As outlined in an earlier article on training and BONE DENSITY - your body needs regular impacts to maximise bone density and running is a great way of generating these impacts and associated bone growth. 09.01.2022 MIND’s EYE For The PT. This blog delves into the art of coaching (I am calling working with a client coaching for the purpose of this article). I work in an environment full of newly minted PT’s (many straight out of a CERT III/CERT IV/Sports Science Degree) and what is very evident and in my opinion a huge downfall for the industry is that these PT’s whilst having some level of theoretical knowledge have all but no technique analysis skills often resulting in clients being...Continue reading

03.01.2022 This week's article is the first in a series of Fatch Fitness VLOGS. Today's VLOG is on the issue of situps & why if you can't perform a full situp, having your feet held down to allow you to sit all the way up doesn't improve your core strength. https://fatchfitness.com/vlog-why-having-my-feet-anchored-/

01.01.2022 In today’s article I wanted to highlight some recent research that helps us focus on what is correct with core (abdominal) training concepts and what we can ignore. I am a firm believer that we should look to perform much of our core training (training in general) within an unstable environment. Reasoning is that whilst we may not be able to lift as much weight as when we are locked down tight on a bench or within a weights machine, we are training a more Functional Strength which ultimately is more important for the vast majority of gym goers.
