25.01.2022 Check out Jasmine talking about citizen science and Powerful Owls on Totally Wild!
24.01.2022 Hi everyone! As we all know, entanglement in barbed wire, non wildlife friendly fruit netting, fishing line etc. is one of many threats to Australian wildlife. Flying foxes, seabirds, waterfowl, gliders, owls, macropods and reptiles are just some of the common victims of entanglement. Matt and I have had to deal with Flying Foxes caught on barbed wire, snakes in fruit netting, and Osprey entangled in discarded fishing line. If these animals don't die, they are often left se...riously injured. A new wildlife entanglement data capture project has just been launched through the Atlas of Living Australia. It is live and running as of today and can be accessed on mobile devices or a computer. The aim of the project is to create an Australia-wide database of wildlife entanglements that can be used to identify risk hotspots, key risk factors and the range (and prevalence) of species impacted. To record a sighting, people will be able to log in via Facebook, Google, or an ALA account. When you record your sighting, include a photo with other relevant information. If an entangled animal is alive or if unsure, call your nearest wildlife rescue group before recording its details and location in the app. If the animal has been deceased for some time, record this in the app along with a photo for verification purposes and to minimise possible duplication of a recording of a sighting. You can find the link for the project here: https://biocollect.ala.org.au//23409a0b-6873-40a1-b291-f7e - Jasmine
24.01.2022 Something for your #frogfriday The most requested amphibian for our Cape York Wildlife Photography tours are the endemic Cape York Graceful Tree Frog (Litoria bella). These frogs have only recently been described and are super photogenic. ... We did not hear or see any of these guys until toward the end of our tour when we started to get a bit more rain!
23.01.2022 We were saddened to notify clients who had booked our extended tours and potential clients when COVID-19 hit, that they were cancelled. Whilst we have lost our international clients, Queensland is open for business to the rest of Australia, sort of (Sorry Victoria). Whilst some of our extended tours remain cancelled we have decided to re-open some of our Queensland based tours. ... We are pleased to advise we will be taking bookings for our Outback Queensland Tours but with a small twist. We will not have set dates and will offer multiple itineraries to work off. We will offer 7, 10 and 16 day itineraries and are only opening these to 2 clients at a time. These tours depart from Brisbane. Grey Falcons, Letter-winged Kites, 2 to 4 Grasswren species, Budgies and plenty of other outback species await you! If you are interested in heading out in July, August or September! Please drop us an email or private message where we can discuss your options!
21.01.2022 Hey everyone! A friend of Faunagraphic, Mel, runs Kobble Bird Shelter which is a small, local facility that specialises in birds of prey and takes in a lot of owl species. Just this year owl species such as the Australian Boobook, Sooty Owl, Powerful Owl, Eastern Grass Owl, Eastern Barn Owl, and Australian Masked Owl have passed through her facility.... Specialist bird of prey carers with the knowledge and appropriate facilities required to house and care for these magnificent birds are few and far between here in South East Queensland. The average cost for a raptor rehab can be $600-1000 (for those not needing specialist or long term treatments). We want to make sure these facilities continue to operate so that these birds can get the specialist care they need. So, we have started a gofundme for Mel to help keep things running smoothly. A donation of any amount would be much appreciated, every dollar counts :) https://www.gofundme.com/f/kobble-bird-shelter-saving-seq-b

21.01.2022 Hey Faunatics! It has been great to be out running tours again. Since we announced we were back open for business, we have had a bunch of bookings for our ever popular Nocturnal Tours where we have been seeing some really cool species, including Powerful Owl, Sugar Glider, Sooty Owl, Barking Owl, Greater Glider, Yellow-bellied Glider, Australian Masked Owl, Marbled Frogmouth, Feathertail Glider, and many more! We have also recently set up a Tripadvisor page for Faunagraphic..., so if you have done a tour with us in the past we would really appreciate if you could leave us a review at the below link. Alternatively, you can leave us a review right here on our Facebook page :) https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g255068-d2
21.01.2022 An Australian Masked Owl rescue story. QLD Parks rangers Lisa and Kristie messaged us about an Australian Masked Owl that was seen for a few days roosting very low in the trees, and even on the ground. They sent us some photos, as well as a video of this bird flying out in the open and making quite an awkward landing in a very exposed area in broad daylight. All of this behaviour was quite concerning, so we organised a rescue. ... The next morning we all met up and searched for the owl, knowing she wouldn't be far away. After only 5 minutes, Jasmine found her roosting quite low along the creek line, and unfortunately she was looking very poorly. Although low, she was still out of reach, so Matt used a large net to try and get her down. She was so exhausted that she ended up just grabbing onto the frame of the net and Matt lifted her down low enough to be able to get a hold on her. Once we got her down we all noticed that she had some superficial damage to her left eye, and potentially some head trauma. We then took her up to the wonderful Mel at Kobble Bird Shelter where she has settled into care. So far she has been using her perches and eating like a champ. She had her vet visit earlier tonight where all went well and she was able to go back to Kobble Bird Shelter with only some eye drops, which is great news. Thank you to everyone involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of this beautiful bird. We will certainly keep everyone updated with her progress.
21.01.2022 The feet and talons of Australia's largest and smallest owls. Powerful Owl and Australian Boobook.
20.01.2022 The Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher is a bird we saw recently on our Cape York Wildlife Photography Tour. These birds are the sound of the cape in the wet with their 1,2,3,4,5 calls heard in most places. They migrate from PNG to Australia each summer to nest and can be seen reliably on our Cape tour as well as our Cairns and Tablelands tours and extensions. How amazing is their beautiful, long, white tail!! It moves when they call, it is very cute!!... Want to join us in January 2022? Drop us a line!
20.01.2022 We have come across multiple roadkill owls on the Gold Coast in as many days. What little habitat we have remaining in the Gold Coast local government area is so heavily fragmented that these owls have to cross many dangerous roads while moving throughout their territories. Australias largest owl, the Powerful Owl, has a very low detection rate on the Gold Coast with no regular roost sites or breeding hollows known. When we have seen more dead specimens than live, we know s...omething is quite wrong. The Gold Coast is a concrete jungle, somewhere I would not live if I was a native animal. Video may distress some viewers.
19.01.2022 Guests were treated to some great photo opportunities on the Tablelands extension part of our Cape York Wildlife Photography tour with a stunning leucistic Pale-yellow Robin. From photography and editing tips, to basic ecology and understanding of the subjects you are looking at, you won't want to miss out on the next tour. Email us or drop us a private message for more info!... www.faunagraphic.com.au

17.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE ------THURSDAY 29th OCTOBER 2PM UPDATE: BIRD has been surrendered by a Cairns male and female persons and is currently undergoing a health check at a local vet.------- Help me get back to my parents!... We have a fledgling Rufous Owl that is being kept illegally in the Cairns region that we need to secure so it can be checked over by a vet and reunited with its parents immediately. It was taken from a breeding site we are familiar with in the Mareeba Shire (Far North Queensland - a short drive from Cairns). The Rufous Owl is Australia's second largest owl species, and a ferocious predator. However, when their young fledge, they may spend up to 24 hours a few metres off the ground, or on the ground, before making their way back up to the safety of a tree. Unfortunately, we have a very concerning situation for this bird after a call came in for identification at a local wildlife rescue hotline, but the caller had no intention of taking it to specialist carer and is not a wildlife carer themselves. The hotline unfortunately did not take down key information which may help us locate the bird apart from a phone number. We have no address for where this bird is being kept apart from "Cairns". A local raptor carer has touched base with this person via phone to be told the following: - She saw the chick with its parents but took the bird anyway (Rufous Owl adults are highly aggressive and will protect their chicks at all costs, how did this person get this chick without injury to themselves or the adult birds?) - She has no intention of handing over the bird, and claims she will raise it herself until its too big or can fly This bird is being kept in less than ideal conditions by someone with no knowledge of the species (was originally thought to be a Frogmouth). This person has then hung up on the carer and is now not returning calls. We have made contact with local police, who are also having their calls ignored by this person. Now we are reaching a 4th possibly 5th day in which this person has had this Rufous Owl chick. In our experience this chick was probably in 100% health, but as each day passes we are fearing for the worst. If you live in the Cairns region and have seen any suspicious activity, or you are friends with this person, please get in touch with us ASAP. The life of an innocent Rufous Owl is at stake. 16.01.2022 Another tour gem! Due to the cooler weather (especially at night), reptiles were few and far between. Fortunately for us, the days were warming up so we had several sightings of Central Bearded Dragons. Driving a somewhat desolate landscape with no sign of wildlife for hundreds of kilometres I noticed this female dragon in the middle of the road. Even though she would be safe as there is virtually zero traffic we pulled over and attempted to grab her and move her off the roa...d. Unfortunately she had other ideas and due to the lack of hiding spots took off under our legs and ran up into the underside of our vehicle. Jasmine slid under the car and grabbed her and we walked a little further off the road. A few images and we left her to be! Central Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps)
15.01.2022 Live amongst the metropolitan mayhem? Do you walk to work and see those "boring" feral pigeons and ask yourself "Why can't pigeons be sexyyyyy?" Head to the outback and get your sexy pigeon fix! Flock Bronzewings are a stunning outback pigeon. Decades ago these birds could be seen in the thousands but numbers have suffered due to pastoralism! One is lucky to see a group of 100 of more these days. What a sight a group in the thousands would have been!
14.01.2022 Hey everyone, This is a follow up post to our fundraiser for Kobble Bird Shelter back in May. Thanks to everyone's generous donations, this incredible flight aviary was officially opened today! How amazing does it look?! This new aviary will help birds practice longer flights and build up their fitness before release. A big thank you to everyone who donated and shared. We raised around $1500 which helped fund this huge project. There will be a stage 2 at some stage, so you ...will hear from us again when that is in the works. For those who haven't heard of Kobble Bird Shelter, it is a small, local facility in Kobble Creek, South East Queensland that specialises in birds of prey and takes in a lot of owl species. Just this year, owl species such as the Australian Boobook, Sooty Owl, Powerful Owl, Eastern Grass Owl, Eastern Barn Owl, and Australian Masked Owl have passed through Kobble Bird Shelter. Specialist bird of prey carers with the knowledge and appropriate facilities required to house and care for these magnificent birds are few and far between here in South East Queensland, so we want to be able to help them wherever possible so that they can continue with their fantastic work.
13.01.2022 We are finally back from our Outback Queensland Wildlife Photography Tour. So it is time to share some images! First off the ranks is this stunning Cooper Creek Turtle. This species was named after naturalist Angus Emmott and we were lucky enough to photograph them on his property, Noonbah Station last week!... Cooper Creek Turtle - Emydura macquarii emmotti
13.01.2022 Hi Faunatics! Things at Faunagraphic have of course been quiet as we have not been running tours due to COVID-19. However, we are pleased to announce that we will begin running tours out of Brisbane and the Gold Coast again from this week. We will only be taking a maximum of 2 guests for now and will post an update when this changes.... We already have a few bookings for our popular nocturnal tours over the next two weeks and we are so excited to be able to get back to showing people the amazing wildlife South East Queensland has to offer! If you are interested in booking a tour, please get in contact with us via PM or via our website to confirm what dates we currently have available :) https://www.faunagraphic.com.au/Tours/NocturnalWildlifeTours
12.01.2022 Some photographic updates from our recent Outback Queensland Wildlife Photography Tour. Over the next little bit, we will be sharing some of the memories of our recent tour. Second up are some beautiful nesting parrots! Early on the the trip we were able to witness large amounts of Cockatiels and Budgies investigating nesting hollows. Whilst the budgies were quite shy, a pair of Cockatiels allowed a close approach after realising we were no threat and provided some magical p...hotographic opportunities. Top tip: Don't rush at your wildlife photo target, take your time. Take a few steps, take some photos. Take a few more steps, take some more photos. The more patient you are, the better chances you have of great photos!
12.01.2022 If there's one animal that tops the requests for our Cape York tours, it's not a bird! It's the majestic Green Tree Python (Morelia viridis). One of the most beautiful snakes in Australia (and the world).... If there is one snake to change your opinion on these animals, it is this species! Here is a nice head shot of this stunning python, in which we saw close to 20 individuals during our stay in Cape York.
11.01.2022 We are half way through our Outback Queensland Wildlife Photography Tour. Thought we would share some of the scenery we have been enjoying! Unfortunately we were unable to share our tours with interstate or international clients but hoping we will be able to again next year, fingers crossed!

11.01.2022 It's Tyto Tuesday folks! That means it is time to share an image of a Tyto owl! Here's a beautiful Eastern Barn Owl (Tyto javanica) with some prey!... Feel free to share your own images of our stunning Barnies in the comments section!
10.01.2022 On Endangered species day and the Federal Government approved the Cairns Regional Council’s request to disperse the Nationally Important Cairns library Spectacled Flying Fox camp. As you may know, this species suffered a catastrophic loss recently with over 30,000 individuals dying in extreme weather events. For those who visit the Cairns region know how important the library and its surrounds are to this keystone species. With the Federal government approving this request ...it sets a VERY dangerous precedent for any other threatened species and shows how our EPBC act does not actually help our fauna at all. With all focus on COVID-19 at the moment I can only think this was passed whilst our attentions are taken away from these pressing matters. Please jump on and sign the petition and let it be known, this is NOT ON!! https://www.change.org/p/cairns-regional-council-stop-force
10.01.2022 A Sooty story. 10 weeks ago an underweight, very ill Sooty Owl female was found wet and in bad shape on the property of Hans. With a few beverages under his belt, he phoned Barry who took the bird to Australia Zoo. At 900 grams or so, she had lost condition due to a very overgrown bill which would have inhibited her ability to eat. (See attached photos from Hans).... Next up Mel! from Kobble Bird Shelter, who cared for this girl during her rehab period. Unfortunately not much testing was done at the hospital so it was hard to work out why her bill had overgrown. Generally a symptom of an underlying problem however. Mel plumped this girl up. Probably hitting 1200grams. Anyone saying Sooties are little owls are crazy!!! This is Powerful Owl weight range! Jasmine and I visited Mel twice to trim her bill, where I took off some good length and reshaped it. Then it was off to the Sunshine Coast to release her. We met back up with Hans and Barry and took her to a nice spot close to where she was found. The fat blob flew to the nearest tree and slowly made her way higher in the canopy over the next 30 minutes. The screams of an immature Sooty got her attention and Hans and Barry departed. Soon after, adult sooties piped up and she started trilling back and flew off down the range. Things like this arent possible without the help and combined effort of like minded individuals. Thanks Hans, Barry and especially Mel for bringing this girl back from the brink. Happy ending!

08.01.2022 This Papuan Frogmouth used our red torchlight to its advantage by opening its bill and closing it when large insects passed by! How good is that!! #faunagraphiccapeyork
07.01.2022 Hi all! We have closed off our GoFundMe campaign for Kobble Bird Shelter to help continue their efforts in rehabilitating our amazing raptors and of course our amazing owls here in SEQ. We would like to thank you all for your kindness as we raised over $1400 for Mel!... We recently visited Mel to help trim a Sooty Owls bill and to say hello to all her current patients! Rescue and rehabilitation plays an important part in the conservation of our native wildlife! Thanks Mel for all you do!
06.01.2022 Yellow-bellied Gliders are a highly requested animal on nocturnal tours. It's easy to see why! From their crazy vocalisations to their amazing gliding display it's hard not to love them! Australia has two subspecies of Yellow-bellied Glider. One is from from Victoria through to South-east Queensland and the other in North Queensland and surrounds!
04.01.2022 The Powerful Owl season has virtually come to an end in Queensland with the majority of successful owl pairs having fledged their young. It has been a fantastic year with lots of new birds being found in the way of single birds, non-breeding pairs and of course breeding pairs with hollows! Being one of the countries largest citizen science projects "The Powerful Owl Project" is run in both NSW and QLD. It is a great way to connect with nature and also help with locating Aus...tralia's largest nocturnal avian predator. Finding new owls and identifying territories enables the project to liase with local and state government to try to protect their ever decreasing habitat. By protecting Powerful Owls, we then in turn protect a lot of other species. This is what is known as being an "umbrella species". If you would like to get involved next season, please follow the below link. QLD, NSW and VIC residents are encouraged to join! Please note whilst VIC does not have a project running, sightings are still welcomed via Deakin University. https://birdlife.org.au//urban-bi/powerful-owl-project-pow
01.01.2022 Meet Mr Blue Egg. This is a male Splendid Fairywren. He is currently in breeding plumage which will help him obtain a mate or two, or three!
