19.01.2022 Due to increased concern regarding the spread of COVID-19 and to protect the health of all participants, the Committee has decided to cancel the Possum Training Workshop and all subsequent Training Workshops until further notice. All Non-members who have paid the $25 entrance fee will receive a full refund. It is very upsetting to cancel this Workshop and we understand that many of you will be disappointed, but the safety and well- being of both our Members and guests is paramount and out of precaution, the Committee has decided this is the best course of action. 16.01.2022 Note...the Fauna Rescue bat phone is not working properly. Until this situation is rectified please call 0421692045 for any bat queries/rescues. Thankyou for your patience.

15.01.2022 This is a photo I took a couple of years ago at our Adelaide colony. Flying-foxes can have a one metre wingspan enabling them to fly 50 + kms per night to feed.... Their wing membranes can become torn or get holes in them. They can still fly with small to medium holes in their wings and most tears and large holes repair themselves given time. Their membrane regenerates. The flying-foxes have amazing healing abilities. If you find a injured or orphaned bat in South Australia please call us on 0475132093 and we will send out a vaccinated carer. See more

12.01.2022 To help provide cooler air temperatures for our resident bats, the sprinklers in Botanic Park will be turned on today between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Adelaide's G...rey-headed Flying Foxes struggle with extreme heat. Last year, thousands of bats perished during the Adelaide summer heatwaves. We hope this small act of kindness will help get them through the hottest part of today. Its important to remember, if you come across a bat on the ground, they should never be handled. Please contact the City of Adelaide Park Lands Ranger on 0407 394 662 or Fauna Rescues dedicated Flying Fox helpline on 0475 132 093. This will enable an appropriately trained person to collect the ill or injured flying fox and keep our Park Lands safe and enjoyable for everyone. You can find out more about Adelaide's Grey-headed Flying Foxes and why they are such an important part of our ecosystem here: https://www.cityofadelaide.com.au/GHFlyingFox SA Water

08.01.2022 This is heartbreaking and why it was so important that we do everything in our power to save the flying-foxes here in Adelaide. People have questioned me why we... saved and not euthanased most that were rescued on 24th November. This is why. Our climate is rapidly changing. Our bats are telling us something just like the canaries in the coal mines used to do. Our colony is increasing. Yes we have well over 100 babies in care to try and help save this species from extinction. They are already on the vulnerable species list. A keystone species being wiped out by humans and climate change. See more

07.01.2022 With the upcoming heatwave, it's a timely reminder to keep an eye out for our Grey-headed Flying-foxes. If you see one on the ground, please do not touch them. ...So they may get the appropriate help, please contact our Park Lands Ranger on 0407 394 662 or Fauna Rescue SAs flying fox helpline on 0475 132 093. To lower the air temperatures and provide the bats some relief and respite from the heat, the City of Adelaide and the Adelaide Botanic Garden will once again put the sprinklers on during the day, from Tuesday through to Friday. If you would like to provide some assistance, Adelaide Bat Chat have put a call out for donations of fruit and cotton materials that may be used as wraps for bats in care. Interested to find out more about our precious bats, and the people who care for them? Find out more here: living.cityofadelaide.com.au/flying-foxes

03.01.2022 Fauna Rescue Flying-fox & Microbat Team are seeking expressions of interest for non-vaccinated helpers to join the team at Flying-fox Heat Stress Events (HSE) in the coming season. You must be a Fauna Rescue financial member to be able to participate. It is ESSENTIAL that you are able to attend our HSE course 1pm-3.30pm on Sunday 11th October at Masonic Hall, 1 Fisher Street, Tusmore 5065 if you wish to be part of the Flying-fox Heat Stress Event Team. A Heat Stress Event c...an take place from November-February when temperatures reach over 42 degrees, so you must be able to cope with those temperatures for periods of time. We get an indication by following weather forecasts when an event could happen. Often bats do not start to need help until the latter part of the day, so even if you work you could be of vital help from late afternoon into the evening. The course will cover: The different roles of volunteers Monitoring a HSE Site set up Role of site Coordinators Occupational Health & Safety Stages of a HSE When to assist the bats Triage Fauna Rescue HSE Policy The non-vaccinated roles include: photographers to record the day's events (you do not need fancy professional equipment for this, good shots taken on a phone will be adequate), spotters of bats in difficulty, communications, respite and refreshment organisers, transporters, scribes for weights and measures of deceased bats. We need to be open and not hide the fact that some Heat Stress Events can be extremely traumatic with many deaths (over 10,000 bats are estimated to have died in last seasons events), but if you feel you are able to participate, you will be invaluable in helping saving many lives and Fauna Rescue and Adelaide's Flying-foxes are in need of your assistance. If you are or know of any Fauna Rescue MEMBER who may be interested in joining us as a non-vaccinated helper please pm your or their details. If you wish to join Fauna Rescue, this can be done via our website. See more
