18.01.2022 Article rank 12 May 2014 Moreland Leader Tim Michell Fawkner push for NPL1 inclusion to retain talented juniors FAWKNER Soccer Club is eyeing off a place in N...ational Premier League 1 next year as it looks to keep hold of its most talented junior players. President Tony Schipano said the club whose top men’s team competes in State League 4 North would seek a meeting with Football Federation Victoria to push for inclusion to NPL1 in 2015. Schipano said Fawkner feared it would lose junior players it had developed unless it was included in the top tiers of Victorian football. We’re trying to look forward and enter the NPL, Schipano said. We’ve been told we can apply in about August or September. We put in some interest before it started but there was a bit of the unknown. Fawkner has about 320 junior players registered for 2014, along with a State League 3 women’s side. Schipano said the club would be ready to enter the NPL after multi-milliondollar upgrades to CB Smith Reserve later this year. With the success of our juniors, we want to move forward. We don’t want to lose any of them, he said. After all the hard work we’ve done over the last three or four years we don’t want to lose that. Fawkner would be Moreland’s fourth NPL club if it was given the green light, joining Pascoe Vale, Moreland Zebras and Brunswick City. FFV has announced it will admit two new clubs, Border FC and Eastern Jets, into the NPL next year. Fawkner has made an impressive start to its State League 4 campaign under new coach Sam Basano, going undefeated through its opening five games. Schipano said Basano’s efforts to foster team unity were paying off. They’re all playing for him, which is a good thing, he said. He added a quality defensive unit had been the backbone of Fawkner’s early-season success. Fawkner hosted Watsonia Heights on Saturday as it searched for its fifth win in six matches. The match was to be decided after deadline. Fawkner next travels to Ryder Oval to face Parkville Panthers from 3pm this Saturday.
