11.01.2022 Happy 99th Birthday to The Royal British Legion! The British Legion was formed on 15 May 1921, bringing together four national organisations of ex-Servicemen that had established themselves after the First World War. *The National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers... *The British National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers *The Comrades of The Great War *The Officers' Association The amalgamation of these diverse bodies can be attributed largely to two men: Field Marshal Earl Haig and Tom Lister of The Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers. Lord Haig served as the President of The Royal British Legion until his death. The British Legion was granted its ‘Royal’ status in 1971.

09.01.2022 RE: Announcing plans for the 2020 Poppy Appeal Dear Poppy Appeal Organiser The Poppy Appeal is the Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign. With the Appeal enabli...ng us to make a difference to our Armed Forces community and their families, it is a priority for us every year. This year will be a tough year, but an incredibly important one. As we mark our 99th Poppy Appeal, we are presented with huge challenges that the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had across our society, but there are also significant opportunities for innovation and change. The Legion still has a job to do the impact of Covid-19 has left some in the Armed Forces community, as in many others, in dire need of urgent help and support. We are asking our partners, volunteers, fundraisers, members and staff to come together and get behind the Appeal in a way not asked of them before. In spite of the challenges we face, we have come up with alternative ways to bring the Appeal into communities across the country and I’m pleased to be able to share these plans with you all now. Poppy Appeal 2020 Priorities Our priority this year is to ensure that everyone who wants to take part in Remembrance can do so, either by making a donation for our traditional poppy, or by taking part in other activity that we have put in place as part of our contingency plan. Equally important is the safety of the public, you, our Poppy Appeal Organisers and other volunteers, members, military personnel and our staff. Poppy Appeal 2020 Plans This week we will be telephoning those of you who have agreed to take part this year, to let you know about some additional optional activity that has now been assessed as safe for you and your volunteers - who are not in at-risk categories - to take part in. This activity has been made possible by the easing of restrictions by the government and the Fundraising Regulator and on your feedback and that of our other volunteers and members. Involvement in this additional activity - which includes the distribution of poppies to key sites and face-to-face collecting (where a table is used to display poppies and to base contactless devices or collection tins) - is entirely optional. Some additional stock, including dated 2020 pin badges will be made available for this activity and stock requirements will be taken from those of you who choose to participate, on these calls. To enable social distancing, hand-held (volunteers holding a tin) and House to House collections will not be permitted this year. For those of you who are unable to take part this year, please rest assured there will be lots of ways the people in your communities can support us this year. The Legion can confirm that our corporate partners - major supermarkets, banks and other national and regional retail stores - will be offering poppies directly to the public in more than 10,000 outlets across the UK. Even with this support, we won’t be able to deliver boxes of poppies to every location that has supported us in the past. However, a downloadable, printable poppy is being developed so that businesses can still donate and show their support; and for families and bubbles, a small pack of poppies can be ordered through the Legion’s website. The dedicated Poppy Appeal page on the Legion website will be live on 22 September at rbl.org.uk/poppyappeal We will also be using more cashless technologies than ever before we have doubled the number of contactless terminals available this year, and will make QR codes and text-to-donate available to make sure everyone is able to make a donation in a way that they are comfortable with. The Poppy Appeal will launch to the public on 22 October we don’t have confirmed plans for the national launch yet, but we will update you on these closer to the time. Poppy Appeal Covid-19 collection guide all the information you need We have produced a Poppy Appeal Covid-19 collection guide for our Poppy Appeal Organisers and volunteers that contains all of the information you need to stay safe when distributing poppies to schools and local businesses, as well as the guidelines you must adhere to when undertaking face-to-face activity. This will be mailed to you in the week commencing 18 September. In the coming two weeks, our Community Fundraising staff will be speaking with those of you who have let us know you are able to be involved, to discuss our plans in more detail. If you have let us know you will not be involved this year, we will continue to keep you updated via our October newsletter; but if you would like more information before then, please visit the Legion website or get in touch with your Relationship Manager (CFR/FRA). However you support the Appeal this year, thank you for your ongoing commitment that will help the 2020 Poppy Appeal be as successful as possible. Across the Legion teams are starting planning for the centenary of The Royal British Legion next year, and the 100th Poppy Appeal. We celebrate the contribution of our Armed Forces community across generations and while the challenges our Armed Forces face may change, the sense of duty shared by all who serve never fades. The Poppy Appeal and Remembrance honours the contributions of our elderly members of the Armed Forces community who demonstrated strength in adversity, a generation who has brought wisdom and solidarity as we have faced some of our most difficult times since the end of the Second World War; and also the contributions of a new generation of the Armed Forces community who continue to defend our way of life, and who this year have stood alongside essential workers on the frontline in the fight against Covid-19. Thank you all for your support in making this Poppy Appeal as successful as ever. Best wishes, Simon O’Leary Assistant Director of Fundraising Poppy Appeal

04.01.2022 We know that many of you have questions regarding the upcoming Branch Annual General Meetings (AGMs) and Branch Elections this year. Our priority from the beginning of the pandemic has been our members’ safety, so with that in mind the Membership Council recommends the following: AGMs Branch meetings and AGMs are not to be held in person this year. As an alternative, Branches are encouraged to hold virtual meetings if possible, using Teams or similar platforms. Those Bra...nches that have already been doing this, should continue. Elections If you are unable to carry out branch elections, then where possible, all current Branch Officers and Committee Members should remain in post for another year. We will work with you so that MS1 can be submitted for this year. If there are any changes to last year’s MS1, please notify your Membership Support Officer. If you are able to submit a new MS1 for this year electronically, please do so as this will enable us to update our records and contact the current Branch Officers with relevant information in the future. Please bear in mind that all the above can be overridden by local Covid-19 restrictions and guidelines in the UK and abroad. Please stay safe and continue to take care of yourselves and each other. With my best wishes Jason Coward RBL Board Trustee Chair, RBL Membership Council Chair, Poppyscotland Trustee, National Memorial Arboretum
