25.01.2022 Release! That bittersweet time when we have to say goodbye because all wild animals should be wild! Last evening Dancer and Prancer - Quenda who came into care at Christmas time after mum was killed by a car. They were still in the pouch and weighed just 100g- both boys - they have literally been climbing the walls of their respective enclosures. They are like little balls of muscle. Good luck Prancer! I hope you find a good place.... when you stop running. #quenda #australianmarsupial#wildlifeconservation #wildliferehabber #australiananimals#freedom#wildlivesmatter#weneedawildlifehospitalinthesouthwest #kaatijinupbiodiversitypark #fawna#volunteers #fauna#australia#joy#community

23.01.2022 BATS AND POSSUMS - NIGHT TIME EXCURSION TO AMBERGATE RESERVE April sees the Busselton Naturalists Club focusing on Ambergate Reserve and its wildlife. On Thursd...ay April 8, in place of its normal monthly meeting, the Club will be searching for bats and possums at Ambergate. Using a US-designed Echo Meter, any bats flying around the reserve at dusk will be recorded and hopefully identified. Then, after dark, a search will be carried out for western ringtail possums in the peppermint tree woodland in the south eastern section of the reserve where revegetation over the past 30 years has turned a former sand pit into a well-vegetated peppermint forest. The excursion starts at 5.30pm when the four bat roosting boxes - one in each quadrant of the reserve - will be inspected for bats just prior to the time when they begin their nightly search for insects. At 6.30pm, participants will enjoy their BYO picnic meals and, at 7.30pm, spotlighting will hopefully locate some of the ringtail possums known to live within the reserve. The excursion is open to the public and families with children are especially encouraged to take part. The evening event is free. Meet at 5.30pm at the car park in the centre of the reserve on the corner of Queen Elizabeth Avenue and Doyle Road. Bring torches, mosquito repellent (just in case), a picnic meal and some folding chairs. No RSVPs are necessary - just turn up. The second activity at Ambergate happens on Sunday April 18 when a BirdBlitz will be held, organised by Christine Wilder from the Cape to Cape Bird Group, when a special bird surveying technique will be used to try and identify every type of bird present within this high quality remnant of native vegetation. More details in due course.

20.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC week everyone, NAIDOC Week celebrations are being held across Australia this week as NAIDOC commences today Sunday 8th Nov till Sunday 15th Nov. N...AIDOC is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’, the acronym has since become the name of the week itself. This years NAIDOC theme 'Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through Ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always was Always will be.... See more

19.01.2022 The outcome of the 2020 bird count by BirdLife Australia. Why are Rainbow Lorikeets ruling the roost? The rise of the Rainbow Lorikeet highlights the changes in... Aussie backyards over the past half-century, with traditional European-style cottage gardens making way for native backyards which provide the perfect place for these nectar-loving birds to forage on the flowers of eucalypts, bottle-brushes, and grevilleas to harvest nectar and pollen. This shows the impact that planting natives can have, head over to our gardening tips page to see which plants will attract your favourite birds. BirdLife Australia See more

12.01.2022 IS YOUR BUSHLAND AT RISK FROM DIEBACK? A PURPOSE-BUILT SPRAY UNIT IS AVAILABLE FOR HIRE If your native bushland has or is at risk from dieback, phosphite spray ...will give native plants 2 to 3 years resistance against the disease. The Busselton Dieback Working Group has a trailer-mounted spray unit available for hire. Its only used for phosphite so it is free of pesticides and other unwanted chemicals. The spray unit has a 30 metre hose with a 20 m spray distance, allowing you to cover areas up to 50 m from the roadway or track used to gain access to your vegetation. One tankful will cover an area 100-200 m long by 30 m wide in forested bushland, more in low scrub, less in dense bushland. Its best to have two people using this spray unit: one to drive the vehicle; the second to operate the spray. It shouldnt be used on a hot day or when rain is forecast within 24 hours. The unit is easy to operate. Contact Julie or Duncan via the groups Facebook page or phone 9756 6617 if youd like to hire the spray unit and trailer. Cost is $50 per day plus phosphite at $40 per tankful.

11.01.2022 Tis the season! **PLEASE SHARE!** AUSTRALIAN MAGPIES: DOs & DONTs: DO seek advice from a wildlife hospital.... DO respect magpies and keep magpie families together. DO follow the advice of licenced wildlife rehabilitators. DONT feed, take home, make a pet of, cut the wings of, cage, or displace magpies. DONT try to release magpies into an area they were not originally from. DONT illegally take wildlife from the wild. If you find a magpie and you think they might need some help, this advice may help... When to take a magpie straight to a wildlife hospital: -if there are any injuries. -if an adult cant fly. -if a nestling (tail less than 3cm long) is on the ground. -if a bird has a tumour, disease or parasites. -if the magpie has been attacked by anything, brought in by a cat, harassed by a cat or disturbed by a dog. When to wait and watch: -if a fledgling is on the ground, wait and watch to see if the parents return; contact a wildlife hospital for advice if parents dont return for 2+hrs. -if you are concerned a chicks parents might have died, wait and watch to see if family members/parents return. -if you have returned a young rehabilitated magpie to their territory, wait and watch to see if the parents feed them. -if a fledgling is on the ground in the evening, wait and watch to see if the fledgling can climb up a tree to safety. When to interfere and place a young bird in a tree: -if the young bird is fledgling age and not injured or unwell. -if there are parents around but the young bird cannot get itself up into a tree. -if the young bird is at risk of predation or attack if left on the ground. -if it is getting dark and the young bird is still on the ground. For ALL NESTLING BIRDS, please take them to a wildlife hospital for assessment to check for injuries. If they are healthy, the wildlife hospital will help you by providing advice on the best course of action. It is now illegal for people to keep magpies without a licence. It is now illegal for magpies to be kept or cared for by someone who is not licenced to rehabilitate this species. But we do need your help to rescue, transport and return magpies to their families where appropriate! Please do the right thing for the magpies and seek professional advice. We really hope to PREVENT humanisation, illegal keeping/trade and inapropriate magpie keeping this season. Prevention is the key. Magpies seem to be a species at high risk of illegal taking from the wild and keeping as pets. We can all help them but educating our friends and families and seeking professional advice. As always, we love magpies and are here to help if you have any questions or concerns about these beautiful birds. Have a wonderful day everyone!

05.01.2022 WHY IS IT BAD TO FEED AUSTRALIAN MAGPIES? This gorgeous young magpie was surrendered to us this week after being found desperately pecking at someone's back doo...r. She is showing all the signs of being kept illegally as a pet and fed on an innappropriate diet. Note the severe malnutrition and bars in the feathers. She's also emaciated. But luckily for her, she hit the jackpot when the person who answered the door to her knew she needed to go straight to a vet. She's now at the shelter and we will do all we can to correct her nutritional deficiencies, treat her parasite burdens, fix those feathers and get her into her own flock for future soft release. Please don't keep magpies as pets. Not only is it illegal, but sadly every year we see dozens of magpies with malnutrition from backyard feeding.

05.01.2022 WA artists, Heavy Duty, released an outdoor exhibition this morning called 'Deforestation Detour'. It aims to put a spotlight on the hidden destruction going on... in the South West forests every day. Concealed behind a thin veil of trees along the South West highways, native forests are being logged and cleared at a rate of 10 football fields every single day. Since European settlement, 90% of WA's South West forests have been decimated. Stand with us to save the rest, sign the petition here: https://bit.ly/forestsforclimate Stay tuned for their video later today!

04.01.2022 Did you know feeding native birds can alter natural behaviour and harm their health? It creates an unhealthy dependence on humans and the food is often not suit...ed to their physiology. Additionally, it can draw birds into unsafe areas where they may be predated on. Feeding native birds without a licence is now an offence under the new Biodiversity Conservation Act. Feeding commercially available bird seed can also spread weeds and may be a blend that isnt suitable to native birds. Instead, you can play your part by having native plants and shrubs in your garden, so birds have access to natural food sources. More info on having a bird friendly garden is available at https://perthzoo.wa.gov.au//do-your-p/bird-friendly-garden. Read more about feeding native birds in the winter edition of LANDSCOPE magazine, out now in newsagents and online at shop.dbca.wa.gov.au

02.01.2022 Investing in new tools to tackle the threat of feral cats on our native wildlife Last week, the Australian Government announced it had committed $2 million t...o upscale the production of two feral cat control tools, the Curiosity bait for feral cats and Felixer Grooming Traps. The Curiosity bait for feral cats is a small sausage with a hard plastic pellet containing a humane toxin (para-aminopropiophenone, or PAPP). The bait has been designed to minimise the risk to native animals. A hard pellet limits access by animals other than cats. The Felixer Grooming trap is an innovative and automated tool to help control feral cats and foxes. This tool uses sensors to distinguish target cats and foxes from non-target wildlife and humans and sprays the targets with a measured dose of toxic gel. Across Australia the toll of feral cats on our remarkable wildlife is significant. According to Australias leading scientists each day, more than 3.1 million mammals, 1 million birds and 1.7 million reptiles are killed by cats across Australia. More information about these tools and feral cats can be found at http://environment.gov.au//feral-animals-austra/feral-cats : Felixer cat traps being trialed at Pullen Pullen reserve. 01.01.2022 IT'S OFFICIAL! The sign bearing the new locality name is up at Nguraren Kalleep Reserve. The name means ''Ringtail Camp' in Wadandi dialect and represents the e...ndangered native residents of this bush land paradise. The land encompasses the river at the northern end of the Margaret River townsite and was formerly referred to 'A Class Reserve'. Thank you to everyone who attended the naming ceremony and community celebration on the weekend!
