17.01.2022 Responding to biting incidents can be quite scary and stressful - for us and the children involved. There is no magic formula to address this but there are defi...nitely a few things we can do to best support children (and ourselves!) when these situations occur. Borrowing the words of Janet Lansbury, our aim is to have an unruffled response when dealing with challenging behaviors such as biting. We send children the message that I’m here to help you. I got your back. So how can we help? Here are a few practical tips from experts on what to do when addressing biting situations: STAY CALM Children notice when our words don’t match our body language. When we get triggered by a behavior, our actions and demeanor can show how we truly feel. Our first step is to calm ourselves. This gives us a more mindful perspective on how to best respond to the situation. DON’T USE LABELS Stay away from saying biter and victim. Apart from what we’ve said before about children internalizing these personas, labeling them as such can bring about feelings of shame, anger and guilt. The last thing we want to do is to shame them for a behavior they have no control over. Instead, we can say, the child who bit and the child who got bitten. USE A CONFIDENT, NEUTRAL VOICE When we address a big behavior using a confident and neutral voice, we convey the message that children can trust us to be there to appropriately respond to their needs even in their most difficult moments. By doing so, we also show them our loving and respectful presence and tell them that we are there to help and not judge them. KEEP IT SHORT AND SIMPLE Our goal is to talk to the child who bit and the child who got bitten and acknowledge what happened using clear and simple language. By doing so, we’re not giving power to the behavior and we avoid making the incident a big deal. It may seem counterintuitive, but having a big reaction can make the behavior more appealing and interesting for young children. (More on this tomorrow!) We’ll talk more about how to handle biting in the next couple of days. Have you ever dealt with a biting incident before? Share your story with us.

14.01.2022 We've had a lot of interest in the sandpit lately. Especially finding stray rocks hidden in the sand. Miss Kiana made a hiding game with our youngest friends where she would dig a hole and hide a truck then ask the bubbas to find them. To continue this exploration we have found some larger rocks around the yard and have cleaned them of any dirt. Next we are drying and will be painting them some bright colours to hide and find in the sandpit
