25.01.2022 Yesterday we organised a Canberra-based community catch up. We have had so much fun. Getting together with other LGBTIQ+ who've experienced forced displacement was precious for our community and our wellbeing. Thank you to all people who donated to support our work. You can donate https://giveout.org.au/fdpn-lgbtiqrefugees [image description: both photographs depict a stack of Jenga wooden blocks with a close up on players' fingers removing a block. 19.01.2022 Wilful resistance to meaningfully engage with LGBTIQ+ refugee-led work and eligibility for grants that is only determined by DGR status means that organisations with multimillion budgets apply for 20K grants or organisations who’ve never come near #LGBTIQ+ #refugees suddenly want to do this work. Meanwhile LGBTIQ+ refugees remain with no support, isolated and invisible. Forcibly Displaced People Network as an LGBTIQ+ refugee-led org has solutions, capacity and community with ...us to lead this work. Yet day by day we have to compete against ‘well-meaning white refugee advocates’ who know better. This is not only exhausting on the personal level, this does not create any sustainable and systemic changes for the community. If your organisation has recognised the need to support LGBTIQ+ refugees here's what you do first, before applying for grants: 1. Sign on to #CanberraStatement on the access to safety and justice for LGBTIQ+ refugees and people seeking asylum to publicly show your commitment https://fdpn.org.au/policy/canberra-statement/ 2. Consult with LGBTIQ+ refugee-led orgs (note: refugee-LED, not simply peer run, not where it is controlled by a big NGO, not because you know a refugee, but truly refugee-led) on community needs (Forcibly Displaced People Network has an amazing LGBTIQ+ refugee advisory group of 17 people from Australia and Aoteoroa New Zealand) 3. Train all you staff, review your policies, make your stance on inclusion visible. 4. Support already existing LGBTIQ+ refugee-led work that builds communities across Australia, bring people together and drives systemic change: https://giveout.org.au/fdpn-lgbtiqrefugees

19.01.2022 This month we were nominated for the ACT Government Multicultural Award and yesterday we went to celebrate the nominations and winners at the event organised by the ACT Multicultural Advisory Council with the support of Chris Steel MLA This nomination for Forcibly Displaced People Network is more than just a nomination. It's a recognition and acknowledgment that LGBTIQ people existed in all cultures and all societies. This nomination is the recognition that lesbian, gay, bise...xual, transgender, intersex and queer lives matter. Companion House: Assisting Survivors of Torture and Trauma nominated us as they recognise our work for LGBTIQ forcibly displaced people. Thank you for the effort and time that you put in this application. We appreciate your work in the ACT. Yesterday there were many deserved winners! All the heavy work is on the shoulders of our communities to create a safe and inclusive space of belonging for all members of our diverse society. We strongly believe that one-day LGBTIQ multicultural work will receive recognition. You can support LGBTIQ forcibly displaced people here https://giveout.org.au/fdpn-lgbtiqrefugees

14.01.2022 October is the LGBT+ history month. Since 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol are the key international instruments that are saving peoples lives. However, in relation to LGBTIQ people, only in 2008 UNHCR issued Guidance Note on Refugee Claims Relating to Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity for the first time dealing comprehensively with refugee claims based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity.... In October 2012 new Guidelines on International Protection No. 9: Claims to Refugee Status based on Sexual Orientation and/or Gender Identity were issued to provide advice on substantive, procedural, evidentiary and credibility issues relating to such claims. In the 2019 Global Refugee Forum, the space remained heteronormative where LGBTIQ lives remained invisible and their needs for safety are not met. Tina Dixson persisted, risked her career but broke the silence about LGBTIQ displacement in her speech during the Refugee Statement Closing plenary Assembly Hall, 18 December 2019. Stay tuned every Thursday this month for a little lesson on LGBTIQ+ history.

12.01.2022 Our founders wrote a piece on the challenges of LGBTIQ refugees and how we can create needed support. http://fdpn.org.au//lgbtiq-needs-safety-belonging-and-fre/

11.01.2022 Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. We honour and mourn the lives of trans and gender-diverse people. Your lives were precious. https://tdor.tgeu.org

11.01.2022 " LGBTIQ asylum seekers suffer more than the others, as they cannot seek help from their communities and cannot connect to the Turkish community because of the homophobic culture in Turkey (which is not far from their own countries). This matter would expose them to brutal behaviours, abusive comments, and even murder. They need to be in the closet until they get to their destination country" writes Nima and Bijan Kardouni to shine the light on the plight of LGBTIQ+ people seeking asylum in Turkey. Read No Safety In Sight: Forgotten LGBTIQ Asylum Seekers in Turkey: https://fdpn.org.au/2020/11/24/no-safety-in-sight/ to learn more. 09.01.2022 Two amazing women received the protection visa! For the first time in their lives, they were recognised as valuable. We are celebrating them and the beginning of a safe life in dignity in Australia. One of the women said through these 3 years of waiting the LGBTIQ+ community supported me when I was waiting for my interview with the immigration department. Especially the support of other forcibly displaced people has given me and my wife all the psychological support that we need during the long waiting time before getting our permanent residency. That’s the only time that I felt safe with my wife You can support LGBTIQ forcibly displaced people here https://giveout.org.au/fdpn-lgbtiqrefugees

08.01.2022 Happy Bi+ Visibility day! It's a good day as any to remind you that wherever you are in your journey, you are valid, and you deserve to be seen. Being bi+ in the LGBTIQ+ community, these identities are often made invisible even in queer spaces. Add the intersection of being a bi+ forcibly displaced person, these identities are further ostracised within both the forcibly displaced communities and queer spaces. FDPN recognises these intersections and identities, and we are he...re to remind you that you are seen. You are valid. You are ALWAYS queer enough. #biplus #biplusvisibility #bisexualawarenessweek #bisexual #biromantic #pansexual #panromantic #omnisexual #polysexual #fdpn #lgbtqi [image description: Bi+ Visibility Day written in the center of image with white text on a black background that is within a frame in bisexual colours. 06.01.2022 Fathers’ love is very vital in our lives. We dream that one day they will love, support and protect their children. Too often fathers are among the reasons why LGBTIQ people are exiled from their homes. You can support our community to find the chosen family, love and belonging by supporting our peer work. bit.ly/2DnLjo8 [image description: two young people, sitting, looking at each other and smiling against the green background]

05.01.2022 Every post or sharing makes our lives visible! Thank you Chuffed.org for profiling our work and bringing attention to the LGBTIQ refugees' lives. We are stronger with your support.

05.01.2022 According to the Give Out report an estimated $80B in grants is given away to Australian community groups each year. But only a small proportion of that big pile is given to LGBTIQ+ projects. Governments and Philanthropic organisations funded only 0,37% to 0,07% of LGBTIQ projects. Work of LGBTIQ refugee peer-led groups remains largely unfunded. The criteria to apply often make it impossible to compete for funding. Often they support only short term projects assuming that is ...what we need. These two days we took a day off from a paid job to help a person to escape a family violence situation. A person just walked out with nothing. No toothbrush, no mobile phone, no clothes. We connected them with specialist services and continued helping them. We need money to provide much-needed support. LGBTIQ people on temporary visas are in a highly vulnerable situation. You can help us by donating $10 and sharing our work on your social media. You have the power to make us visible in one click. https://giveout.org.au/fdpn-lgbtiqrefugees

04.01.2022 On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we want to bring attention to ever rising rates of violence that women experience globally. Sexual and gender-based violence is perpetrated against a person’s will and is based on gender norms and unequal power relationships. In most cases violence is committed by men against women. LGBTIQ+ people are also subjected to high rates of sexual and gender-based violence. In addition to gender norms, this viol...ence is also driven by heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and intersexphobia. In many cases violence is inflicted by states that criminalise same-sex relationships, conduct harmful medical interventions on intersex people or prohibit the freedom to be who you are by depriving trans people to transition or enforcing inhumane conditions for transitioning. In almost all cases, violence is inflicted by families and communities too. This includes forced marriage, sexual violence, family violence, conversion therapies, depravation of liberty and many more forms; all driven by the power and control. What is important to understand that when LGBTIQ+ people are seeking safety and crossing borders, this does not mean that violence stops. Often it continues even in countries that supposed to be safe. Sexual harassment at work, the choice between being homeless and forced to engage in survival sex for ‘protection’, exclusion, racism, homophobia and erasure are among many ways violence continues. Act with us to end violence against LGBTIQ+ people: 1. Become our monthly donor to help hundreds of LGBTIQ+ to stay safe: https://chuffed.org/project/support-lgbtiq-refugees 2. Sign on to the Canberra Statement on the access to safety and justice for LGBTIQ+ forcibly displaced people: https://fdpn.org.au/policy/canberra-statement/ 3. Book training on inclusive service provision for LGBTIQ+ forcibly displaced people https://fdpn.org.au/for-services-and-stakeholders/

03.01.2022 Our Board Director Aisya Zaharin has written a blog on Muslim trans people reclaiming their visibility through intersectionality and visibility. She writes: "You were the priestesses that held sacred religious and/or medicinal duty in ancient times. You once played prominent roles in the society such as guardians to harems and sacred places; you were the marriage broker and the entertainer in performance arts in the ancient Muslim civilisation during the Umayyad, Abbasid an...d Mughal periods. You were known as khwajasarais; the supervisors or custodians of the harem and royal teachers while some of you held important political positions in the court during the Mughal era (15261827)." 01.01.2022 Everyone strives for belonging and safety. Everyone wants to live in an accepting society where you can be yourself and don't hide who you love. LGBTIQ refugees in Australia too often feel that their existence is silenced and erased. They are left without any help and a place to belong. Forcibly Displaced People Network is the only organisation in Australia that provides support for our community. We highly value your support that can help people feel that their lives matter. https://giveout.org.au/fdpn-lgbtiqrefugees
