19.01.2022 SHOULD WE ROLL OUT OUR IT-BANDS? Great post from FP founder @themfwhisperer Coming from the perspective of showing several hundred results online, I would say... yes. In fact, there are two points we hit first at Functional Patterns. They directly relate to the density found in the IT Band. Why target the IT Band? Because it is structurally really influential on restricting movement. The way it adheres to the Vastus Lateralus is like no other area in the body. Literally, the majority of the shockwave that runs through the body in a dysfunctional step runs right into the IT Band. To say that we need to avoid the manipulation of this influential tendon is downright negligent, if you say you know biomechanics. I know, sounds crazy to those that dont know how to change movement. Keep in mind that at Functional Patterns, we have a reputation for showcasing extreme changes on dysfunctional bodies. We do it so often and barely showcase it, because its boring for people to see now. My question to these rehab people goes back to why their knowledge never showcases a change in mechanics on real human bodies. Sure, they make amazing infographics, but when are they gonna show people changing, without stealing uncited FP material? If you are concerned about the damages of releasing your IT bands, because these myodetards say so, just think about this: THEY CONSTANTLY SUPPORT THE USE OF SQUATS AND DEADLIFTS. 17.01.2022 On a Saturday morning I watched a group of girls aged approximately 6-8 years old performing walking lunges in their warm-up for club sport. It was early mornin...g on a winters day, and every single one of them was using both hands on their lead knee as they struggled to come out of each rep. Heart breaking. Tragically I can see this in all sports of all age groups in the fields and playing arenas in any city in the western world. At least anywhere with internet connection, where dominant trends spread more rapidly. A predominance of misguided, non-effective, career killing and quality of life damaging training methods. Im sure the coach, a middle aged and enthusiastic man, was well-meaning. In the same way the misguided physical coaches globally are for the most part well meaning for some reason they dont ask the question and dig deep enough to understand there is a better way. In the case of walking lunges in the warm up its potentially life-changing knee degeneration being created in group of unsuspecting and trusting minors. If you share my vision that the direction of training in this world is heading in an inappropriate direction you can be part of the solution, as opposition to being part of the problem. 16.01.2022 *BOX SQUAT SHIN ANGLE* The easiest way to determine if you are properly utilizing and engaging your posterior chain in the box squat is to watch your shin angle.... As you descend, your shin angle should start and remain vertical, or even angled slightly back towards the box. There should be NO change in angle as you come off of the box. If you notice shin angle shifting forward even slightly off of the box, chances are you are primarily using your quads to come off of the box. When you are sitting in proper position on the box, keep your abs fully engaged, keep the pressure in your feet by spreading the floor apart. Then contract your glutes and think about performing a Leg Curl to fire off of the box. Stand tall at the top of the rep, fully engaging your hips, glutes and quads. 05.01.2022 WHERE IS THE GAP IN PERSONAL TRAINING? Ever since the powers that be decided to "legitimise" the personal training industry by implementing the CERT system it h...as been a long slippery descent into the depths of mediocrity. What does a personal trainer actually do? .....better still what SHOULD they do? Does a client pay hard earned money to have a minimally educated and largely inexperienced person to call out numbers? Count reps, or in a sing songy voice loudly proclaim "3,2,1, change statioooooooooons" during the group fitness class you are taking (Now theres a contradiction- Personal Trainer directed Group fitness!) Is it the only function of a personal trainer to count in multiples of 12 or 15 ad nauseum or to gruffly admonish you to "puuuuuuush"? I would suggest that this is the gap between what a trainer should do and what many trainers actually do. I can count from one to about 1000 in Japanese but it doesnt mean I can speak and understand Japanese fluently! I would also suggest that a trainers job is to analyse, detect and identify areas of weakness and imbalance, to uncover incorrect movement patterns and incorrect exercise performance and to suggest modifications to ensure the reaching of goals. You can teach anyone to count in multiples (actually there are probably a few who also are missing this basic skill) But in order to provide the feed back and education to adequately perform this job you need a higher understanding of anatomy, physiology, behavioural psychology coupled with the methodology of a seasoned teacher to such an extent that it surpasses ...."Change statiooooooooooons," "Puuuuuuuuush!," and "well duuuuuuun!" An effective trainer is one who educates and illuminates, one who passes on and fosters understanding so that the client can if they want to do most of it for them selves,......when they are ready! It has been my experience over the last 40 odd years that despite being given a thorough education - most clients still opt for the trainer to stay involved - as they have become more educated and can make a better decision which involves - "you gave me understanding, you turned on the lights and opened the doors- I want more!" ......of course to do that you need the illuminating light of education yourself! Cert 3 and Cert 4 dont cut it!- neither does the BSc., or the MSc.,you did 15 years ago and havent added to since! I am unashamedly a proponent of regulation of this industry to ensure that standards are high and remain high - in that way training may just become more than Rep Counting and meaningless feedback platitudes, and that the "back yarder" midnight $40 special will become a thing of the past, both clients and trainers will be better educated, and that Personal Training and exercise will transcend the boundaries of just sport specific, will out grow the notion that resistance training is only the vehicle of bodybuilders, weight lifters and sportsmen, that one only exercises for cosmetic reasons - that in doing exercise we write our own user manual and effect the QUALITY OF OUR LIVES AND THE QUALITY OF THE LIVES OF OTHERS! Inspiring and powerful words.....and then on gift and tag a friend ...that could benefit "Dear Stranger, You dont know me but I hear you are going through a tough time, and I would like to help you. I want to be open and honest with you, and let you know that happiness isnt something just afforded to a special few. It can be yours, if you take the time to let it grow. Its OK to be stressed, scared and sad, I certainly have been throughout my life. Ive confronted my biggest fears time and time again. Ive cheated death on many adventures, seen loved ones pass away, failed in business, minced my words in front of tough audiences, and had my heart broken. I know Im fortunate to live an extraordinary life, and that most people would assume my business success, and the wealth that comes with it, have brought me happiness. But they havent; in fact its the reverse. I am successful, wealthy and connected because I am happy. So many people get caught up in doing what they think will make them happy but, in my opinion, this is where they fail. Happiness is not about doing, its about being. In order to be happy, you need to think consciously about it. Dont forget the to-do list, but remember to write a to-be list too. Kids are often asked: What do you want to be when you grow up? The world expects grandiose aspirations: I want to be a writer, a doctor, the prime minister. Theyre told: go to school, go to college, get a job, get married, and then youll be happy. But thats all about doing, not being and while doing will bring you moments of joy, it wont necessarily reward you with lasting happiness. Stop and breathe. Be healthy. Be around your friends and family. Be there for someone, and let someone be there for you. Be bold. Just be for a minute. If you allow yourself to be in the moment, and appreciate the moment, happiness will follow. I speak from experience. Weve built a business empire, joined conversations about the future of our planet, attended many memorable parties and met many unforgettable people. And while these things have brought me great joy, its the moments that I stopped just to be, rather than do, that have given me true happiness. Why? Because allowing yourself just to be, puts things into perspective. Try it. Be still. Be present. For me, its watching the flamingos fly across Necker Island at dusk. Its holding my new grandchilds tiny hands. Its looking up at the stars and dreaming of seeing them up close one day. Its listening to my familys dinner-time debates. Its the smile on a strangers face, the smell of rain, the ripple of a wave, the wind across the sand. Its the first snow fall of winter, and the last storm of summer. Its sunrise and sunset. Theres a reason were called human beings and not human doings. As human beings we have the ability to think, move and communicate in a heightened way. We can cooperate, understand, reconcile and love, thats what sets us apart from most other species. Dont waste your human talents by stressing about nominal things, or that which you cannot change. If you take the time simply to be and appreciate the fruits of life, your stresses will begin to dissolve, and you will be happier. But dont just seek happiness when youre down. Happiness shouldnt be a goal, it should be a habit. Take the focus off doing, and start being every day. Be loving, be grateful, be helpful, and be a spectator to your own thoughts. Allow yourself to be in the moment, and appreciate the moment. Take the focus off everything you think you need to do, and start being I promise you, happiness will follow. 02.01.2022 From a pharmacist and nutritionist I can tell you that these facts are something to consider before taking prescription medicines: 10 Interesting Medications F...acts: 1. The osteoporosis medication Fosamax (and others like it) were designed to trick a bone density scan, by keeping dead bone in the bone matrix. Dead bone is supposed to float away in the blood but Fosamax forces the dead bone to stay. This weakens the bones until the bone often disintegrates into dust, most often happening in the hip or jaw. The law suits against Fosamax and other drugs like it are massive. 2. Pain medications can increase heart attack risk because pain killers shut off nerve communication in the body (so you cant feel the pain) but unfortunately the heart and brain also need nerve communication to operate. Pain killers can stop this communication, causing an increased incidents of heart attacks. 3. Birth control pills were first tried on both men and women. In the male group, the scrotum and gonads both shrunk in test subjects, so the idea was cancelled. Some in the female group died, so the dose was readjusted. Only males were in charge of this experiment. :( 4. Statin drugs stop the liver from producing cholesterol and cholesterol is used in the body to make other compounds, one of which is co-enzyme Q-10. CoQ10 is needed to contract muscles. Some fatal accidents have occurred when people driving cars (and taking statin drugs) have been believed caused because the drivers were no longer able to contract their leg muscles to work the brake or gas pedals and drove off the road, killing themselves or others. 5. Beta blockers (given for high blood pressure) are designed to make sure the heart doesnt beat too fast. People on these medications should not exercise vigorously because a higher heart rate is needed to oxygenate working muscles and remove waste from energy production. With the heart being blocked from beating fast when exercising (by the beta blocker), a host of emergency situations can occur. 6. A leading side effect of anti depressants is increased depression and suicidal thoughts. 50% of people prescribed anti depressants stop taking them within 3 months, simply because theyre too toxic and the side effects too severe. 7. The average weight gain with antidepressants is 40lbs in a year. Weight gain above 100lbs has been recorded in patients taking antidepressants, over a 12 month period. When the body is toxic, it increases hormones that increase fat gain and water retention, in order to dilute toxic concentrations. Anything that makes you gain weight, means your body is being poisoned. The greater the weight gain, the more powerful the poison. 8. Heart burn medications for GERD (acid reflux) block the stomachs production of hydrochloric acid, which in turn doesnt allow food to digest properly. This leads to fatigue and a general energy crisis in the body, which leads to more disease because the body cant effectively extract the energy and nutrition from food without the proper concentrations of stomach acid. 9. Over the counter antacids, like Rolaids and Tums, contain dangerously high levels of aluminum which have been proven to cause toxic effects, many of which are in the brain and neurological system. Alzheimers, Parkinsons, MD, MS. ALS...all related. 10. Antibiotics destroy the intestinal gut flora in the body, which are proven to actually organize and run the bodys immune system. Biotic means "life" in latin so an antibiotic is anti-life, killing many beneficial things in the body as well. When antibiotics destroy the beneficial gut bacteria, as well as other over grown negative gut flora, this often leads to long term dysfunction in immunity.
