10.01.2022 Speech Pathologists do so much more than just focus on speech. They are qualified to assess a persons ability to safely swallow, diagnose swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and advise what dietary changes need to be made (texture modified diets or thickened fluids) to allow them to eat safely. Dietitians can then assist to make sure the modified diet is as nutritious, varied, accessible, practical and enjoyable as possible. If you are caring for or supporting someone with swallowing difficulties, their Speech Pathologist can assist you with any concerns you may have about how safely they are able to eat and drink while their Dietitian will help with any concerns about how nutritious their intake is.

04.01.2022 Montessori Mealtimes in Dementia Care For those of you who are already familiar with the Montessori Method, you might be wondering what place early childhood education principles can have in dementia care. I was first introduced to the concept of using Montessori methods in dementia care several years ago and quickly discovered that the Montessori philosophy perfectly reflects my approach to care: ‘To enable individuals to be as independent as possible, to have a meaningful p...lace in their community, to have high self-esteem, and to have the chance to make choices and meaningful contributions to their community’ Last night I got an update from Dementia Training Australia on some of the wonderful outcomes residential facilities are observing from introducing Montessori mealtimes. When adapted to aged care generally, the Montessori philosophy allows for a person-centered care approach incorporating a prepared environment, quality choice, independence, purposeful activities, and increased socialisation. When adapted to mealtimes specifically, the use of Montessori strategies can mean the difference between being fed or enjoying a meal. If you are supporting someone living with dementia, whether they are in residential care or still living at home, I can work with you to identify and implement strategies to allow mealtimes to provide more benefits than just the nutritional intake. To learn more about how this approach could help those you are supporting, call (02) 4330 0685 or email [email protected]
