18.01.2022 37 Feather Flower Brush Silkies have gone off to this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show . Does that mean we’ve returned to showing poultry after all these years??!! No, they’re there to win hearts not prizes . You can find them all at the Farmyard Nursery where they’re on full time cuddle duty helping to entertain and educate a whole new generation of chicken lovers. ... Please PM me if you’re interested in finding out more about how you can have a cuddly Silkie of your own.

17.01.2022 These two gorgeous pom poms have been on hold for a secret Mother’s Day order for ‘a peach and a white’ silkie. I think they’re going to make one chicken loving mum very happy tomorrow . Happy Mother’s Day to magnificent mums everywhere. May you all be loved, treasured and celebrated tomorrow.

14.01.2022 RAPTOR CLOSE ENCOUNTERS UPDATE Further to my Wedge-tailed Eagle post, unfortunately they have been successful in killing our birds on at least two separate occasions and they’ve cleaned up all but two of our next door neighbour’s lovely white fantail pigeons that used to grace a charming dove cote in their garden. I shot this video two weeks ago but hesitated to post it because it included dead birds. I’m sure one of the eagles was responsible as this is the yard I saw an ea...gle fly out of when I surprised it a few days earlier and I found an eaten out carcass in there about a fortnight earlier. The amazing thing was that a young, feisty Lemon Sussex rooster in the pen appears to have fought the eagle off !!! He was torn and bleeding and at death’s door for two days but thankfully pulled through. Now I only let that pen out when I’m around and I’ve increased hiding places where the birds can seek cover. Netting the whole yard area, more than a hectare, would be a huge, expensive and complicated task I just can’t contemplate at this stage unfortunately. See more

11.01.2022 Full moon in the night sky? Nup, just a tub of tiny, day old Guinea Fowl keets with plumbago flowers.

09.01.2022 RAPTOR CLOSE ENCOUNTERS TWO Goshawk: Me: Discovered this guy trapped in a chook pen last night. I left the door open so it could see itself out in the morning. Fortunately the only occupant was a huge Buff Sussex rooster who was unscathed and the pen was inside our fox fence so he was safe spending the night with the door open.

09.01.2022 This very ordinary photo was taken immediately after something quite extraordinary happened - a magnificent Wedge-tailed Eagle, Australia’s largest bird of prey, was sitting in this chook yard right among our chooks. The moment I rounded the corner it took off, empty clawed, and disappeared into the bushland in the background. It was such a thrill to see this magnificent wild bird so close but the thing that amazed me most was the calm, unconcerned behaviour of the Sussex c...hooks who were completely unperturbed by the presence of this dangerous predator in their midst. I’d have expected an eagle would cause utter pandemonium among the chickens. The only ones concerned were the young turkey gobblers who were gawping at it making their What the #%@&???!!! noises. Time will tell if it begins to be a nuisance making meals of our poultry but in the meantime it was awesome to see this majestic wild creature up close. See more

09.01.2022 Hope you’re all enjoying a lovely, happy Easter Monday afternoon. Here’s my recipe Ingredients: - an armful of plumbago blossoms, - an old wicker basket, - a sweet and gentle Dutch rabbit,... - a sprinkling of tiny day old Sussex chickens Method: Warm softly in afternoon light until golden See more

07.01.2022 One of the highlights of Claudia’s day was cuddling a turkey almost as big as she is. He’s now been named Claudius in your honour, Claudia. Massive thanks for your awesome chicken catching and expert bird handling skills at the photo shoot today! .

06.01.2022 I can’t wait to start sharing the fabulous photos taken today by the wonderfully talented and enormously patient John Stanley of Kris’s Feathered Friends. It’s so exciting to at last be creating a high quality visual record of ten years of breeding and developing new Sussex colours. A massive thank you to our outstanding backup team of chicken whisperers, production line catchers, runaway wranglers, props coordinators and refreshment suppliers!!! It was great fun to work with you John, Krissy, Claudia, Tim, John, Mick, Emily, Allan and Nona! Fortunately most birds were much better behaved than this one!!! .

05.01.2022 One of the things I love best about the Collectors’ Plant Fair is watching the moving garden that makes its way continuously through my stall. I get to see a wonderful two day parade of treasured new purchases from seedlings to saplings, from bulbs to bouquets, and the pleasure and satisfaction those simple plants give their new owners is a delight to see. I didn’t think to photograph the plant train but here are some shots of my stall at this amazing event I’m privileged to be part of each April.

04.01.2022 RAPTOR CLOSE ENCOUNTERS ONE Eagle 1: What are we having for dinner? Eagle 2: Let’s drop in to Feather Flower Brush on the way home and pick up some takeaway chicken. Eagle 1: Sounds great... as long as that weird chicken protection activist isn’t there running around waving her arms screaming, No, no, no!!! Don’t you dare come down here and hurt our birds! Go somewhere else and find something feral to eat!... It’s a very bad photo but those two blackish blobs in the centre top of the pic are two whopping Wedge-tailed Eagles in the trees overlooking our chicken yards.

03.01.2022 Just one of the many wonderful stories behind the growers and their nurseries at the Collectors’ Plant Fair. Come and join us next weekend at Clarendon in Sydney’s north west for a fantastic day out.

03.01.2022 Our neighbour has coined the moniker ‘Hoop Iron Al’ for my father, Allan. We all reckon there’s not a single handyman job on our farm that my darling 89 year old Dad can’t solve with his creative use of hoop iron (aka bracing strap). Here he’s used it on one of his handmade gates - yep, he’s still making gates in his 90th year! Also one of his signature hoop iron gate latches.

02.01.2022 An attempt to show a matching rabbit and chicken was photobombed by a matching dog. From left, Phoebe (dog), Eilish (Dutch rabbit) and Icecream-With-Caramel-Sauce (Silkie cockerel).

02.01.2022 Here’s my Feather Flower Brush logo ‘diary’ for February 2018 Feather: Lots of cute as buttons Silkie chickens are here at last following months of frustratingly poor hatches during the heat of summer. Flower: In just two days at the end of February we received more glorious rain than in the whole of the previous eight months and all around the garden blossoms are suddenly appearing, seemingly sharing our joy at the breaking of the drought. Brush: A month of inspiration with a magnificent exhibition of Dutch Masters paintings, an exquisite miniature owl print from Julia Las in Ukraine and a lovely set of new Rosemary & Co watercolour brushes. Now I just need to find the time and energy to put those brushes to work!

01.01.2022 What a thrill to take delivery of this beautiful, expertly crafted display cabinet I commissioned from master woodworker Ron Smythe for my greeting cards. Ron’s ability to somehow see into my mind’s eye and grasp *exactly* what I wanted is astounding. The three sections have folding support struts so they can each stand alone or all three can be linked together and folded to form a protective case when not in use. I couldn’t be happier with it and can’t wait to use it at the Collectors’ Plant Fair at Clarendon NSW on April 7th and 8th. If you love plants and all things related to them then this is *definitely* the fair for you! Do drop by Feather Flower Brush at stall 34 and say ‘hi’.
