25.01.2022 Enjoying the company of our latest guests. Just on dusk, the cottage BBQ heating up, and the wine flowing to help embellish our discussion.

23.01.2022 More visitors enjoying the camping facilities at FeathernFriends. We really enjoy the southerners visiting us each winter.

22.01.2022 Thank you Carmen, Dave and Ruby for sharing your thoughts on our property. Yes, it is beautiful and peaceful and we enjoy meeting campers and hearing about all their travels. Carol and Les.

22.01.2022 Bathtime today for this Eastern Yellow Robin at FeathersnFriends, Julatten.

21.01.2022 We have opened FeathersnFriends property/gardens to campers/RVs/Caravanners who are interested in birds and other wildlife (for those interested we have a link giving details on our FeathersnFriends website: www.feathersnfriends.com.au). Our friendly guests arrived from Melbourne to stay with us for a week. Enjoyable happy-hours and great times had by all. Last night was a delightful warm evening with all of us at the Highlander bistro/bar for a scrumptious meal - Coral Trout - then as we ventured home, down came the rain - 52mm overnight. Photo shows their van & camper set up beside one-another in the camping area.

20.01.2022 This juvenile buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher was clipped by a car yesterday afternoon. After spending an hour or so in the cap recovering he quickly flew off into the tree above. A good outcome.

19.01.2022 The whipcrack voice of the Eastern Whipbird is one of the delights of the Australian bush. Despite the Whipbird being very elusive and hard to photograph, our Melbourne guests, Ian and Corrie got this photo of the Whipbird on our property. Great shot Ian.

18.01.2022 Busy morning at FeathersnFriends, Julatten around our fig tree today. Plenty of fig birds and barred cuckoo shrikes. The buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher photo was taken 2 weeks ago by Jim Thomson from the Newcastle Mercury. Thank you Jim for the brilliant photo. The Kingfishers are still feeding but expect the young to appear soon.

18.01.2022 Thought I better put something on our FBook page as I have been rather slack for a while now.... Our resident pair of Bushstone Curlews have had their yearly dose of fun and produced two new babies. Generally only one survives (snakes/illness/dingos or whatever). However, this year we have two healthy babies growing fast and learning to scream during the night. Both standing either side of Mum. Check out the fluffy down as they gradually develop feathers.

18.01.2022 Our Red Jade Vine (Mucuna benettii) also known as Flame of the Forest has just flowered for the first time - so not many flowers to date. The spectacular flower is about 400mm long. Along with its equally spectacular blue-green cousin (Stronglodon macrobotrys) these plants are distant relatives of Wisteria. Both vines are growing over our shady rest spot adjacent to the cottage. Photos below show the Red Jade Vine and the Blue-Green Jade Vine flowers.

18.01.2022 Had a visitor this morning. A Superb Fruit-Dove flew in and sat on our laundry bench before spending some quiet time in the garage, then flying off. Able to get a couple of close-up photos before he decided the bush nearby was far more comfortable.

17.01.2022 Amazing photo of our camping area at night taken by our Canadian camper, Alex Mickelson. Brilliant phot Alex!

17.01.2022 Hi Everybody, You probably realise I do not use facebook too often! So will have another go right now..... Jeanette and I wish you all a Merry Xmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. We have sold our Julatten property (some months ago) to Les & Carol (from Melbourne) who are now in residence and running Feathers n Friends Bird Watchers Cottage and the small camping sideline via Wikicamps. They are loving the tree-change they have moved to and enjoying the beautiful..., quiet and friendly area, which, incidentally, we think is the nicest place in the world. We have purchased a large block of land in Mareeba (about 70kM from Julatten) and are busy planning a new, passive-solar, house which we should commence building next year. In the mean time, we are living in a small house that we own here in Mareeba (it was purchased a year or two back as a rental property and when the tenants lease was up, we decided to move into it - a bit more room than the caravan.....). Our move was prompted by our advancing years and the (probable) need to be nearer hospitals, Doctors, supermarkets etc. We do miss contact with all the very interesting overseas guests and campers who, we believe, kept us young and happy! Les and Carol have taken over the FnF (Feathers n Friends) website and will possibly take over this FnF Facebook page (if we can fathom how to do that!). Jeanette & I are both well and love it up here in far North Qld. Our new address is 16 Jannali Court, Mareeba, 4880. Good luck & fond regards to you all. Fred & Jeanette See more

16.01.2022 Adult and juvenile buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher taken today at Feathers'n'Friends, Julatten. Plenty around at the moment feeding their young.

16.01.2022 A few posts back we showed Femke and Freek (from the Netherlands) planting their trees in our habitat restoration project. I have taken a few photos of a mature Silk Handkerchief tree (Maniltoa lenticellata) we have here which shows the magnificent display of new leaves. The near white, young leaves gradually turn pink, then light green then through to dark green as they mature. Femke will be pleased to know her tree has doubled in size in just a few months and will end up hosting a display like that in the photos. The bunches of new silk handkerchiefs are about 300mm long.

15.01.2022 An Olive-backed Sunbird enjoying an early morning feed and a White-lipped Treefrog with a traveller - possibly a Rocketfrog!

14.01.2022 Bathtime today for this Eastern Yellow Robin at Feathers'n'Friends, Julatten.

13.01.2022 We had a flock of Spangled drongos here this morning having a feed of insects. They ate their catch in our mango tree and in the same tree (practising social distancing) was one of our buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers!

12.01.2022 The following photos of the Little Shrikethrush, the Red-backed Fairywren, the Wompoo Fruit Dove, the Bush-stone Curlews and the Pale-yellow Robin were taken by Stephen McLean during a visit to FeathersnFriends early July. Thanks Steve!

12.01.2022 Today as we arrived home we spotted our first Musky rat-kangaroo on our property (on our driveway). Unfortunately didnt have the camera handy. The musky rat-kangaroo (Hypsiprymnodon moschatus) is a marsupial species found only in the rainforests of northeast Australia. Looks like our extensive plantings of endemic rainforest trees (and their fruits and flowers) are bringing the results we aimed for - an influx of native birds and animals. Photos courtesy Wikipedia.

11.01.2022 Well.... Have not been active on Facebook for a while - you can probably guess I am not a great fan of Facebook!. However, thought some of our friends may like a short video from a drone that flew over our property. Video courtesy Michael Hiscock - Droner Specialist (0448 791 6260). Just check out how beautiful it is here in Nth Qld. The Politicians may not be the best but the weather, the people and the lifestyle make it the best place in the world to live.... If you would like to peruse a few images taken by the drone have a look at our FeathersnFriends web site link: http://feathersnfriends.com.au/fnf_aerial_photos.html Cheers.

11.01.2022 Took a walk around our property with some friendly German campers the other day and took a few photos of our Red Jade Vine and its spectacular showing of flowers. These flowers are about 450mm long. At this time of the year both the Blue Jade and Red Jade flowers in our garden are showing - what a sight! The Red Jade Vine is a superficially similar species to the Blue Jade Vine. The Red Jade Vine (Mucuna bennettii) is also known as Flame of the Forest or New Guinea creeper and is a native of the Philippines. Propagation of this vine is difficult and is considered an endangered species due to habitat destruction and loss of native pollinators.

11.01.2022 Abundance of life this morning at Feathers'n'Frends. The beautiful buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers now just about posing for photos, plus our resident white-lipped Treefrog and one of our amethystine pythons that's had a big breakfast!

10.01.2022 Three birds this morning just outside our door: a Yellow-spotted Honeyeater having a sip of Nektavite, a red-browed finch at our birdbath, and an Emerald Dove enjoying the morning sun.

10.01.2022 One of our regular visitors. The Spectacled Monarch enjoys the surrounds of our recently completed frog pond. This species habitat range is along the near coastal regions from mid NSW to the tip of Cape York. Another nice photo taken by Ian & Corrie.

09.01.2022 Can somebody offer some help to identify these beetles? Every year at the start of the wet season these beetles gather on the electricity poles on our property. One day they are not there, next day there are thousands of them. Only gather on two of the the electricity poles (of which there are 4 on the property), not on nearby trees or anywhere else. They stay there for a few months (not sure exactly) then disappear. Havent worked out if it is precisely after the wet has ...completed - will keep a watch this year. I suspect they may be a dung beetle that has vacated the wet ground and looking for a dryer area to sit out the wet? Photo01 shows a group together on the pole. Photo02 shows a few groups of the beetles stretching right up the pole. Photo03 shows a close-up of the beetles. Yep! the wet has hit us this last few weeks and it is fantastic. See more

09.01.2022 All quiet at FeathersnFriends in Julatten except for our birds! The buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers have been with us since the end of November and it wont be long before the adults will fly back to New Guinea and be followed 3 weeks later by their offspring. Our resident Bush Stone curlews are always a source of amusement and the Macleays honeyeaters are always around.

09.01.2022 We have enjoyed the company of 4 young, delightful Germans camping here for a few days. They are traveling around Australia and currently enjoying the sights of far-north Queensland. Christiane took this photo a day or two ago of a fantastic rainbow looking out to the east from near their camping spot.

09.01.2022 The Wompoo Fruit Doves are having a ball at the moment feasting on Cocos Palm seeds. There were up to 10 birds on the bunch fighting and squabbling for the ripest seeds. Notice the purple breast on the one at the top of the bunch. These colorful birds are in here every day at the moment. Occasionally they feed on the ground picking at fallen fruit.

07.01.2022 A typical winter morning in our coldest month (August). Was 14 degrees C, when I took this photo (at 0730 hours) a few days ago, and a low fog over the paddock. It was up to 23 degrees by 0930 hours. 13 degrees C is the coldest we have experienced here in the 8 years we have lived here, and the hottest we have experienced is 32 degrees C - ...ah.... what a great climate.

06.01.2022 Abundance of life this morning at FeathersnFrends. The beautiful buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers now just about posing for photos, plus our resident white-lipped Treefrog and one of our amethystine pythons thats had a big breakfast!

06.01.2022 Welcome to the Feathersnfriends facebook page. My husband Les and I purchased this property last July and are continuing to welcome birders and campers. Our Cottage is fully self-contained and can sleep up to 8 people. Our campground is extensive, has toilet and shower facilities plus an area to wash dishes and power to charge phones/laptops etc. Julatten is well known for being one of the best birding areas in the tropics as well an ideal environment for mammals and reptiles. Information on rates and bookings please contact us on 0412991175 or (07) 4094 1665. Cheers, Carol & Les

05.01.2022 Red-bellied Black Snake that is a regular on the path frequented by bird watchers in Mt Lewis National Park and spotted on the pathway up to the old Tin Mine Dam. About 1.3M long and in good condition. Needless to say, our dutch friend, Femke, was rather cautious for the rest of our walk.

04.01.2022 All quiet at Feathers'n'Friends in Julatten except for our birds! The buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers have been with us since the end of November and it won't be long before the adults will fly back to New Guinea and be followed 3 weeks later by their offspring. Our resident Bush Stone curlews are always a source of amusement and the Macleay's honeyeaters are always around.

04.01.2022 Jeanette sharing a delightful riesling with our recent guests (Ian and Corrie) on the cottage patio. Guess you can pick they are from Melbourne, dressed in short-sleeve summer clothing despite it being mid-winter here in the tropics. Where else would you want to be?

04.01.2022 The following fantastic photos were taken by Julien, Dreamtime Nature Photography (DNP) during his 2-week stay with us. He is a fabulous nature photographer and we were lucky to have him stay with us.

03.01.2022 Happy-hour time.....What a way to spend a balmy winter evening. Sitting on the cottage patio enjoying a couple of cool Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs, a couple of gutsy South Aussie reds and a spread of tasty nibblies with our cottage guests from Adelaide. Joining us, our son Aaron, wife Fabiana and baby Emma visiting from Argentina.
