25.01.2022 If you are worried you may have a low breast milk supply, the first thing to do is get some breastfeeding support. Lactation Consultants can provide practical help with attaching the infant to the breast and with guidance on strategies to build milk supply by increasing frequency of breastfeeds and/or by expressing. If the supply problem persists you may be suggested to try the prescription medication Domperidone. It's the most effective and common medication used to boost milk supply - but should be used combined with practical strategies to build and maintain your milk supply.

21.01.2022 LUNCHBOXES With the return of school and kinder this week, I have spoken to a number of stressed parents about how to approach the year ahead. Many schools and kinders have policies around what can be packed for lunch and allowing only particular foods (fruit or vegetables) at morning snack time while in the classroom. For many of the children and families I see these policies only make eating and going to school more stressful for a child with a limited range of foods they a...ccept. This article by Kelly (a primary teacher herself) from Embracing Nutrition covers some great points. For me it always comes back to the Division of Responsibility - it is the parent's role to decide what is offered in a lunchbox. The school's role should be to provide a supportive environment - somewhere pleasant to eat and scheduled break times for children to eat. What policies does your school or kinder have around food/healthy eating? Do they make life easier or harder for your family?

19.01.2022 Happy World Breastfeeding Week! Did you know Australian and international guidelines encourage exclusive breastfeeding (no other food or drinks) until around 6 months then continued breastfeeding for up to 2 years of age and beyond? The Australian Breastfeeding Association provides a range of breastfeeding information and support for mothers, families, health professionals and the wider community.... For information about membership: https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/membership For information on your local ABA group: https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/contacts/groups

18.01.2022 Have you heard about expressing breastmilk during pregnancy? It is often recommended for women with diabetes in pregnancy, but no evidence existed. The authors of today's world-first Lancet study on breast milk expressing during pregnancy for women with diabetes done right here in Victoria explain what it's all about. What is colostrum and how do women collect it? Why do women collect it? Is it right for you? I heard about the results from this study earlier in the year - excited to be able to share them!

17.01.2022 Check out my article about hiding vegetables! What do you do in your house?

16.01.2022 I so often explain how growth charts work to parents concerned about their child's growth. Many families come to me worried that their child is too small as their weight and height is well below the '50th percentile' or that their child is too big because they are at the top of the chart. What is important is that children track along the right weight and height percentile for them and grow into the body that they are meant to have. The best way to support this is to trust your child's appetite and follow the division of responsibility in feeding - "parents provide, children decide".

15.01.2022 Is there anything wrong with breastfeeding older babies and children? The World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations breastfeeding until 2 years of age and beyond. Whilst we may not be used to seeing children breastfeed, this doesnt mean that it isnt biologically normal.

07.01.2022 Last night Zac (4) loaded up his plate with salmon, potatoes, Turkish bread and had some eggplant and hommus dips. He demolished what he served up and asked for more salmon. Tonight he had half a wrap, a small piece of chicken and a mushroom. Children are great at regulating their own appetites and its totally normal for their appetite to fluctuate day to day and meal to meal.... When eating meals and snacks allow children to decide how much they would like - whether that is a little or a lot, they know what they are doing #divisionofresponsibilityinfeeding

06.01.2022 Happy international no diet day! Diets suck and they don't work! I often talk to parents about how important it is to not talk about dieting in front of their kids. They are listening to every word. ... Commenting positively on a friend's weight loss in front of kids makes them think that it's a person's appearance that is of value and that smaller bodies are "better" than bigger bodies. If you need support to enjoy eating and get rid of the guilt seek help from a non-diet dietitian!

05.01.2022 Exciting news for Victorian premature and sick babies - the expansion of the Mercy Breastmilk bank. The expansion will see 3-4 times more babies receiving donated breastmilk!

04.01.2022 Do you let your child spit out their food? Sometimes it can feel like good parenting to make your child swallow food that they put in their mouth. In this picture, you can see Hamish (2 years old) has taken many bites of the mini cucumber he tried for the first time, then spat them out into his bowl. Whilst it isnt the most pleasant thing to watch, Hamish knows that he can take a bite or even have a go at chewing a new food he isnt sure about without pressure that he has to... swallow it or finish it. This means he is more likely to give it a go in the first place! When I talk to families about their child trying new foods I encourage them to measure success by small steps a child serving a new food onto their plate and not eating it is a big step. Then it may be serving on their plate and licking the food as another step. Taking a little bite and spitting out the food is a huge next step, working up though taking a bite, chewing and spitting out and eventually taking a bite, chewing and swallowing the food. Remember your job as a parent it to decide the what, when and where of feeding let your child do their job of deciding what food they will eat from what is offered and how much they will eat.

01.01.2022 Last night Hamish (2 years old) hardly ate anything for dinner. He had been at childcare all day and had a late snack were he enjoyed several small muffins and some fruit. At dinner he served himself a slice of bread, carrot, piece of mushroom and small piece of cheese. He ate the piece of cheese and had a small nibble of carrot and mushroom. Then he was done! Did I worry about it? No. I did my job of offering him a meal and sitting together to eat. There was no pressure on ...Hamish to eat so he sat and enjoyed the experience. Making mealtimes a positive experience means that kids can be calm and relaxed - which means it is more likely they will try new foods and eat to their appetite. Family meals are any meal or sit down snack where there is at least one adult sharing the same foods. How are mealtimes going in your house?

01.01.2022 You just never know when your kids will eat something they normally wouldn't! I say this over and over again but sometimes even my boys shock me. Tonight at dinner we opened some eggplant dip I bought today. I put it as part of what was on offer and to my surprise mr 4 dived straight in, enjoyed and asked for more. Seeing his big brother enjoying it mr nearly 2 decided to give it a go! #familymeals #divisionofresponsibilityinfeeding
