25.01.2022 Change in Forage (Switching to Pasture or New Batch of Hay) Most of the time swapping over feeds is written about switching over to a new hard feed. But a lot of the time we forget to swap over our horse’s hay (forage) or pasture should also be swapped over a period of time to reduce the risk of hindgut problems eg colic. Forage should always make up the largest portion of a horse’s diet, by using a suitable adaptation period, as below, when changing over your horse’s hay o...r hay or pasture will reduce the risk of colic (Hillyer et al., 2002). Personally, I prefer to keep the feeds at a certain percentage for a several days to make sure the horse’s digestive system (bugs & bacteria in the hind gut) can handle & ferment the amount of their new feed before progressing on to the new amount. See the two tables below to help you. A Guide to Swapping Over or introducing New Feeds/Fibre: Day 1 - Day 3: 80% of old feed / 20% of new feed Day 4 - Day 6: 70% of old feed / 30% of new feed Day 7- Day 9: 60% of old feed / 40% of new feed Day 10 - Day 12: 50% of each feed Day 13 - Day 15: 40% of old feed / 60% of new feed Day 16 - Day 18: 30% of old feed / 70% of new feed Day 19 - Day 21: 20% of old feed / 80% of new feed Day 22: 100% New feed

23.01.2022 This year I hit a mile stone of 20 years of dealing with horses with Ulcers prior to what would have been the Land Rover Kentucky 5* Three-Day Event. Back in the day there was no use of Omeprazole at eventing competitions. We were smashing 15 tablets of Cimetidine three times a day & syringing this to Sky in water. To be honest it didn’t taste too bad tasted like peppermint From getting Sky Sport (stable name Sky) scoped I personally had a very steep learning curve on a...Continue reading

22.01.2022 A brilliant graphic by the ladies over at T & R to demonstrate why we shouldn't ride our horses on an empty stomach. Why we use a lucerne hay or chaff: This will protect a horse from ulcers in couple of ways. Chewing the hay or chaff will stimulate saliva production and saliva acts as a buffer in the stomach. Horses only start to produce saliva when they have something in their mouths. The fibre also will fill up the stomach & prevent gastric acids from splashing the stoma...ch non glandular portion of the stomach by creating a cap or a layer on top of the acid. Trying to keep the acid down to the glandular section of the stomach where the acid belongs. You should only feed hay or chaff before exercising your horse and if possible long stem forage e.g. hay is the best but chaff is still better than nothing. We sometimes dont have access to the best lucerne hay. Its a wise move to always check the quality of the fibre for being sharp & stemmy before feeding it to your horse. Did you know ? The adult horses, the stomach secretes approximately 1.5 litres of gastric juice hourly and acid output ranges from 4 to 60 mmoles hydrochloric acid per hour. Gastric contents ranges from 1.5 to 7.0pH, depending on region measured. A near neutral pH can be found in the dorsal portion of the oesophageal region (saccus cecus) near the lower oesophageal sphincter. Acidic pHs can be found near the margo plicatus (3.0-6.0) and in the glandular region near the pylorus (1.5-4.0). Gastric emptying of a hard feed occurs within 30 minutes to 2 hours. Whereas, complete gastric emptying of a roughage hay meal occurs in 24 hours.

22.01.2022 Mark & myself don't have hay, so instead we are donating our Shunnerfell Honey to help Horses, Ponies & Donkeys with healing of their burns

16.01.2022 Advice for Horses in Hot Weather : Back at Uni in the UK as students we were involved with the research trial looking into the acceptance & use of electrolytes for horses at rest & working. Ass. Prof Rachel Neville et al., 2003 found you could increase a horse’s water intake by offering slightly salty water as their first drink after exercise. The study found those horses which drank slightly salty water (0.9% isotonic salt solution of 90 grams of salt per 10 litres of water...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Some quick tips for your horse in hot, dry weather Keeping your horse well hydrated & cool is extremely important during hot, dry conditions. Water is required by the horse for several reasons 1) body fluid balance 2) digestive function 3) thermoregulation. An absence of water is more fatal for a horse than shortage of forage. Did you know: Ideal temp for your horse water has been found to be is 7 to 13 degrees Celsius. Make sure your horse’s water is cool, preferably in t...Continue reading

09.01.2022 People have been asking for the Curulli Hay Results for 2019-2020. Please note these results are done by Wet Chemistry over in the USA by Equi Analytical Test #603 & not by NiR in Australia. Great results considering the tough growing conditions & lack of rain fall. People ask what is NIR : With NiR, a spectrophotometer is used to analyse the light spectrum reflected off of a sample when it is exposed to infrared light. Each nutrient has unique reflection characteristics bas...ed on its molecular structure (carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen bonds). The reflectance of test samples is compared with that of a set of similar samples (calibration set) that have been analysed first by wet chemistry. NiR as an analytical technique is faster than wet chemistry methods and requires less labour. However, NiR requires sophisticated calibration development, instrument standardization and constant quality control to ensure good results (CVAS, 2020). NiR system used by the labs must be calibrated with feeds and forages analysed by wet chemistry methods. NiR is fairly accurate if the test sample is in the range of the calibration sample set in terms of forage type, geographic region and growing conditions. It is important the sample be accurately identified so the most appropriate NiR equation can be used. WA forages samples might not be the best to be tested by NiR in Australia because there is slight chance of our WA hays will have been used to calibrate & to standardize the NiR equipment. Perhaps ask if using NiR to find out the forage type used to set the calibration. Trace Elements cannot be analysed by NiR, only for major minerals. If owners would like the full results from Equi Analytical let me know & I will post them :)

06.01.2022 Feeding a horse fibre. Okay there seems to be a "complaint by a few people" at the moment when a horse is being transitioned slowly over from a grain-based & a diet which contains minimal fibre to a diet which is based upon quality fibre & protein sources & grains as & when needed. The issue some folk seem to have is when a horse starts to fill its hindgut with fibre, good bugs & bacteria plus the beneficial water/moisture created, they say "oh your horse is putting on to...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Please WA Horse Owners please please ask questions when buying Hay at the moment. I fully appreciate hay is in short supply. But there are some folk trying to make a fast $$ when you are looking for low sugar and starch meadow hay. If they supply hay analysis ask which company did the test. The logo should be on the hay analysis. Same goes for the ARGT results for WA. These should have the logo for eg WA Ag Dept shown. Questions to ask: Ask was the test done by NIR or Wet Ch...emistry? Ask for an AGRT results regardless of what hay type you are purchasing. It’s not only found in meadow hay. Check to make sure the hay results actually match the samples they are supposed to be selling. This week some one was trying to sell meadow hay using false test results. It wasn’t even for the meadow hay they were trying to sell. The hay results they tried to use were from hay samples from three years ago. A snap shot of the results was taken removing certain details from the results. Then they tried to pass the hay off from another hay producer using hay results from this year removing details from the PDF created.

02.01.2022 Good Afternoon, just a brief message to say we are open for business as usual. Given we are in anything but usual times I am, like everyone, taking things one day at a time. Please allow an extra few days for postage when placing an order for your horse’s minerals as our local post office is on reduced hours. I have been speaking to our local post office & have made provisions & got a system in place to hopefully, if allowed, keep working from home. Personally, I do send e...veryone my best wishes during this time. Our thoughts are with you & your loved ones, as well as the wider equine community as we navigate this difficult time. Stay safe, take care of one another. If I can assist you & your horse in any way please reach out. Thanks to my wonderful clients & as always, I am extremely grateful for your support & I will continue to do my best for you & your horse Jill.

02.01.2022 When I remotely design diets for Thompson & Redwood I often wonder how the horses progress. Lovely to hear how Narelle & her horses Tiger & Tommie are progressing

01.01.2022 For all of you that use Curulli Meadow hay the ARGT results are back & there is no risk. Next will be the Equi Analytical Results but please bare with us this year as postage to the USA is extra slow due to the pandemic.
