07.01.2022 Day Two....Time for a quick brain lesson. The frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for Executive Function Skills. The three main categories of EF skills ...are Working Memory, Cognitive Flexibly and Inhibition Control. This part of the brain is often compared to an orchestra conductor, or the Chief Operating Officer of your brain. It understands the big picture and makes sure everything is working together smoothly. People diagnosed with ADHD have a deficit in one or more of the basic Executive Function Skill areas. This graphic from addvantageslearningcenter.com (thanks guys!) breaks the Executive Function Skills down further. One skill that is left out of this chart is transitioning. The ability to transition from one activity to another is an EF skill that is weak in many people with ADHD. I think its especially important to notice the skills that arent just attention related. By the way.... its a fine line, but you can struggle with one or more EF skills and not be diagnosed with ADHD. We all have strengths and weaknesses. ADHD is diagnosed when there is a persistent pattern that interferes with functioning or development. Many of the same strategies can strengthen these skills with or without a diagnosis. Love your brain.... it is AMAZING!
