23.01.2022 Back to a full day of work, school or uni tomorrow? Does your occupation require you to sit at a desk for long hours? Keep reading to find out more about Postural Pain. What is Postural Pain? Postural Pain occurs when a suboptimal posture is sustained, this can result in muscle imbalances (tightness, weakness etc.) around the poorly aligned structures. This may cause pain, particularly around the neck and lower back regions.... How to prevent Postural Pain when sitting at a desk? Follow the tips below: - If you use a computer, keep the top of the computer screen at eye-level and approximately 45-70cm away from the face - Keep the forearms parallel to the floor and wrists in a neutral or slightly extended position - Use a chair that supports the natural curves of your spine - Keep your thighs fully supported on the chair. Your knees should be at 90 degrees or slightly lower than your hips - Keep your feet supported on the floor. If your chair is too high for you (even after adjusting it), try placing a box (or a big text book) under your feet so that they are still supported - Most importantly: take a short break every 30-60 minutes and have a stretch! What to do if your Postural Pain persists? See your Physiotherapist for a full postural assessment. Some of the treatments for postural pain include (but are not limited to): advice about how to correct your own posture (in sitting, standing, lying etc), ergonomic advice, stretches to improve flexibility, core strengthening/endurance exercises and hands-on treatment. If you require an appointment, call us on 93753311 or send us an email at [email protected]

21.01.2022 At Feel Good we often get asked the question what is the difference between Pilates and Yoga? Here is a brief summary of the key differences between the two exercise styles: - Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 20th Century. It focuses mainly on strengthening the ‘powerhouse’, which are the muscles that stabilize the torso and support the spine. It is based on the belief that all movements are better facilitated with a stable core. Yoga is an ancient practice, o...riginating in India over 5000 years ago. The focus of yoga is to create a balanced mind, body and spiritual connection. - Pilates places an emphasis on strengthening and toning over flexibility. Yoga however places more of an emphasis on flexibility than toning. - Pilates aims to strengthen the core muscles and re-educate postural awareness and alignment. Yoga aims to unite the body and mind to allow inner harmony and the relief of stress. - Pilates exercises tend to be more dynamic, whereas Yoga poses tend to be static (held for around 1 minute). - Pilates focuses on a ‘bucket-handle’ breathing pattern to facilitate exercises. Yoga has many different styles of breathing. - Pilates can be performed with mat based exercises, or with the use of equipment such as reformers and theraband/weights to add resistance. Yoga predominantly involves mat based poses. Despite the differences, there are many similarities between yoga and pilates. Both styles of exercise will help to strengthen the body, re-educate posture and improve flexibility. At Feel Good, we will be commencing a new 10 week term of pilates on the 13th of October for all those that are interested. Our group class times are as follows: - Monday: 6PM and 7PM with Tamsyn - Tuesday: 6:30PM with Janelle - Wednesday: 6:00PM with Leandra - Friday: 9:30AM with Leandra - Saturday: 8:30AM with Janelle Spots are very limited this term, so make sure to secure your spot soon to avoid missing out. 12.01.2022 On 25th November Australian cricketer Phil Hughes suffered a traumatic head injury after a bouncer hit him at the SCG. The ball struck Hughes at the base of his skull, impacting the cerebellum. The cerebellum, also known as the 'little brain' plays an important role with motor control, respiration, coordination and the timing of movements. Unfortunately at this stage Hughes is still in a critical condition in ICU. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time.

10.01.2022 If you have been following the 2014 World Cup you may have noticed the on-field medical team using an aerosol spray on the limbs of injured players. This seems to help the pain immediately, with the injured player back on the field within minutes. So what is this 'magic spray' and how does it work? The aerosol spray is a topical coolant, and typically contains ethyl chloride. This causes the skin to be cooled momentarily, resulting in an instant numbing effect and reduced pain sensation. The spray itself has no healing properties and by no means will it help to speed up the healing of musculoskeletal injuries. The rest, ice, compression, elevation (R.I.C.E) method still remains the gold standard for immediate treatment of soft-tissue injuries.

09.01.2022 Over time training and stress can cause our muscles and fascia to become tight. This may result in muscle imbalance around a joint, inhibiting normal joint and muscular function. Foam rolling can be an effective way of providing self-myofascial release (self-massage) for these tight muscles. This can help to restore tissue length which may help to enhance muscle balance and function. How to effectively use a foam roller: - Apply moderate pressure to a specific muscle/muscle g...roup over the foam roller using your body weight - Try to relax the muscles that you are rolling - Avoid rolling directly over joints, for example the lower back - If you find there is a particularly tight area in the muscle, try and hold the pressure for 10-30seconds and you should feel the muscle slowly start to release itself - Adjust the pressure. Your experience of pain should not be unbearable. If the pressure you feel is too painful, try applying less downward pressure on the roller or rolling the surrounding muscle tissue first - Avoid rolling the same muscle group on two consecutive days if you are feeling bruised For more information on how to safely and effectively use your foam roller, feel free to consult one of our Physiotherapists.
