03.01.2022 Pause for a moment dear friends and remember this day. One hundred and forty-four years ago, a young New Bedford sea captain, George S Anthony, scarcely 30 years of age, left his whaling bark Catalpa off the coast of Western Australia. With a hand-picked crew of his whalemen, he took the steering oar himself, and reached the shore south of Rockingham to meet with the brave John Breslin and the rescued Fenian prisoners. As we observe the need for physical distancing at this... time, let us remember their bravery and daring and the humanity of this young captain. He was not bound by faith or nationality to these Irish prisoners, but by his willingness to ‘do the right thing’ for these political prisoners held in bondage. This decision kept him at sea for more than a year, leaving behind a wife and child and leading his men on a secret mission to face the unknown. There will be no gathering of people this year at the Catalpa memorial site in Rockingham, but we urge each one of you, wherever you are, to take a moment to reflect on this brave act, this daring rescue, this achievement beyond what was considered possible. In this time of uncertainty, we reach out to friends all over the world, those in Ireland and in particular the people of New York who all those years ago accepted these Fenians and gave them shelter. May this story of hope and courage give you strength to overcome adversity.
