Pictured here is William Mariner - an Englishman who lived with the King of Tonga, Finau 'Ulukalala, from 1806-1810. His published account of the experience is known as one of the most intimate descriptions of Polynesian culture, and we'd like to share an extract: "Being now pretty well washed, I again came in the presence of the King, and was sent to the other end of the house, where I was oiled all over with sandalwood oil, which felt very agreeable, alleviating the smart of my wounds, and was greatly refreshing."
