04.01.2022 Our Fern Avenue Gardeners always work really hard to prepare the garden for Open Day. Tomorrow is no exception some like me have been baking up a storm while others are marmalade making or picking & preserving produce from the garden. The garden will be open tomorrow from 11am for the public to see the fruits of our labour

04.01.2022 Pest Watch With this lovely, very welcome wet weather, Slugs and Snails can start to be a problem. They especially love young seedlings, lettuce is an absolute... favourite and snails can easily devour a seedling plant in a night! To minimise damage you could try scattering coffee grounds or crushed egg shells around plants, make a beer trap, or try barriers such as cut down milk bottles with onion bag mesh or bird net offcuts over the top. One of the most effective methods is a torchlight stomp, do this over a few nights and you will significantly reduce numbers. Snails are a favourite snack for blue tongue lizards so attracting them to your garden will help control numbers. See more

04.01.2022 Cut and Come again crops. Many of us are quite used to grabbing a few parsley leaves from the garden but did you know that there are lots of crops that can be t...reated in this way. Open hearted lettuces are a great example take a few leaves from the outside and the plant will continue to grow from the centre. Chard, Spinach, Silverbeet, Kale, Asian greens like Pak Choy and many others can also be treated as a Cut and Come again crop. The trick is to not take too much, no more than half, so the plant has enough leaves to continue growing. Our Magic Square lettuces are looking a good size and will recover quickly if we were to take some outside leaves. If your plants are big enough (they may need another couple of weeks depending on when they were planted), why not make a quick side salad from your own garden lettuces? A quick, easy dressing can be made of 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons of wine or cider vinegar (or lemon juice), 1 teaspoon of honey or sugar, teaspoon of mustard (optional), salt and pepper, place in a jar and shake. Use to dress washed and dried leaves just before serving and you have a quick side salad from your very own garden!

01.01.2022 It has come to the attention of some of our readers of Unley Life magazine that an Open Day was advertised to happen on Sunday 25th of October. After careful consideration it has been decided that the Open Day postponed the issues of social distancing and food service regulations. Apologies for any inconvenience or confusion this may caused.... Regards, The Fern Avenue Community Garden Committee
