15.01.2022 From the Principal: Term 3 has been another challenging time for all of us during this pandemic. I would like to sincerely thank each and every family for your support and efforts during the school term. The staff at Fernbrooke have continued to be committed to every student throughout the school by providing quality teaching and learning. Students at Fernbrooke continue to inspire me everyday. Their willingness to be and do their best in class with their learning and the ...playground during play-time is always a priority. From time to time our kids will make mistakes. Part of our role in supporting children to grow is to help them learn from these mistakes and to focus on what they will do in the future. This is something that I believe we do very well at Fernbrooke. Again, I thank our school staff and parents/carers for your support with this. Next Term will see us participate in a number of exciting end of year celebrations and programs. I look forward to working with you all again during next Term as we strive to ensure every FSS student has the best learning and wellbeing opportunities possible. Have a safe holiday break! See more

11.01.2022 Childrens crossings and School Crossing Supervisors: A familiar sight around schools is the School Crossing Supervisor. They ensure students and pedestrians who cross the road at the school crossing do so in a safe manner. They use a hand-held stop sign to stop traffic and allow pedestrians to cross the road safely. Motorists must stop and wait until all pedestrians are no longer on the road and the School Crossing Supervisor has safely returned to the footpath. When childrens crossing flags are displayed, you must stop and give way to any pedestrians on or entering the crossing (regardless of whether a school crossing supervisor is present or not)

09.01.2022 One way to assist children to comprehend what they are reading is to encourage them to visualise parts of the story in their mind. It is like creating a mind movie in your head while reading. Visualising can be done with fiction and non-fiction texts. While on holidays, take time to read together and practice visualising! Many of the books you read with your child may contain beautiful illustrations. Encourage your child to listen to the story (without seeing the pictures) ...and get a mental image in their head. Compare this image to the illustrations provided. Is the meaning the same? While reading, parents should take a turn to share the image they have created in their mind. Talk about what you visualised! Dont worry if your images are different. Each persons experiences shape the visualisations we make this is ok simply talk about why they are different. It is also beneficial to remind your child that the pictures help us to understand what is happening in the story. Use the senses see, hear, taste, smell, feel to describe the visualised image and emotion evoked. Practice visualising often it is a great way to develop comprehension when reading. See more

08.01.2022 Helping your child while reading at home 1.Read set texts Read the book with your child. Ask your child to retell the story. 2.Ask Questions... Ask questions before, during and after reading. Ask open-ended questions about the text 3.Read Aloud to your child All children love being read to even upper years students. Reading to your child can build their oral comprehension skills. 4.Encourage your child to read to you Multi-task while driving or cooking have your child read to you for 10-15mins Read everything packaging, recipes, instructions etc. 5.Listen to a podcast or audio book. Listening is a great way to encourage visualisation and imagination Online or libraries have free audio books 6.Read every day Read for at least 20 minutes per day! See more

08.01.2022 The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is committed to ensuring road safety around schools. As restrictions ease and all students are welcomed back to school, there will be an increase in traffic and pedestrian movement around your school, so driving safely around school zones will be even more important. Ensuring the safety of children travelling to and from school, walking or cycling, by school bus or private vehicle, is everyones responsibility

07.01.2022 This fun activity is a great way to retell a story that has been read or create your own. Start with a blank piece of paper and a pencil. Use one of the following writing prompts or choose your own and spend two minutes using the prompt to kick start their writing. After 2 minutes, pass the student to the next family member and they continue the story from where the last person left off. Continue swapping until you have created a story. Read the story that has been co-created! This activity encourages children to see writing as a communication tool and a creative task where there is no ‘right’ answer. It promotes children taking risks in their work while also being a fun way to write and read together! Feel free to email in your attempts prizes on offer! Email [email protected] for your chance to win!

07.01.2022 We keep hands, feet and objects to ourselves and resolve conflict without aggression. ALWAYS!!!!!! Be like Perry and be Respectful every day! Staff are also continuing to positively reinforce with students the steps for solving problems peacefully. Consistent and continued focus in this area is making a difference. Students are being taught and encouraged to use the steps and language below when presented with a conflict or problem.... Stop Name your Feeling Calm down (using respectful words) Ignore and walk away if the problem persists. Report to an adult if the problem persists (The language of report is important to dilute the concept of dobbing) Families can support their children to solve problems peacefully by encouraging them to practise these skills at home and in public places. Reminding them of the steps when faced with a problem will go a long way to helping them use the steps automatically. Your assistance in this area is very much appreciated. Thank you.

06.01.2022 Have you ever written a poem? Writing poetry is a genre that many students find difficult. An acrostic poem is a simple poem whereby each letter of a word or phrase begins a new line in the poem. Younger students can start off with something simple like their own name or their favourite pet. Write the word vertically down the page. The words don’t need to rhyme but try and link the words written to the theme of the focus word. You might like to start with words like: Summer, ...Perry, Dogs, Mummy, football, tennis, weekends Reading poetry can also be a fun thing to do. Find a poem and enjoy it together.

05.01.2022 Today Mrs Parker presented our student of the week awards to the year 4, 5 & 6 students at the Senior school assembly. Congratulations to our amazing Fernbrooke Stars!

05.01.2022 Using prompts to starts writing: A collection of imaginative prompts and story starters can be used to spark your child’s imagination. Use one of the writing prompt images to write what happens in the story. Maybe your child would like to draw a comic strip and then write the speech marks to tell the story. The prompt can be used to describe what they see, build a story or continue the next chapter. Talk with your child about what they might like to write about before they start writing. Oral rehearsal is a great way to make connections between what they have read or experienced and incorporate this into their writing. Encourage your child to read their story aloud to promote the link between reading and writing.

02.01.2022 Questions to ask your child when reading When reading with your child, ask them a couple of these questions. Share your answers with them as well. Maybe your favourite character is different to theirs! 1.Look at the front cover. What do you think the book will be about? 2.Who is the author?... 3.What does the illustrator do? 4.What does that word mean? Read the words around to help you find word meaning in context. 5.How can you read an unfamiliar word? Can you segment and then blend? 6.Who are the main characters? 7.What do you think will happen next? 8.How do you think the character feels? Why? How would you feel in that situation? 9.Can you predict how the book will end? 10.Who is your favourite character? Why? 11.Is there a hidden message in the story? What is it? 12.Can you retell the story in your own words? 13.Do you like how the story ended? Can you think of another way the book could have ended? If you would like additional information on how to support your child to read at home, please contact your childs teacher or a reading team member at [email protected]

02.01.2022 Dont be hasty, think of your childs safety: Parents are being encouraged to use stop, drop and go (kiss and go) zones or similar facilities, when dropping their children at school. The daily drop off and pick up can be stressful, but it should always be safe. Ensuring childrens safety in and around school zones and educating them on safe street practices, is a top priority. Parents are being encouraged to use these zones rather than walking their children into school. Thes...e zones are in place so a vehicle can stop for a short period of time to drop off or to collect children, moving on immediately to allow other drivers to use the zone. When used correctly, the drop and go zones are very safe and effective, helping reduce traffic congestion around schools. Remember: Queue and stay in your car Wait until your children arrive - ensure seat belts are secure, then leave the zone safely. It is a 2-minute loading zone if your children are not able to be loaded within two minutes, drive out of the zone and re-join the queue. Move out of the zone if you do not wish to re-join the queue and find a park elsewhere. Be considerate and do not overstay your time in the zone
