10.01.2022 The Completion Ceremony of Tanabe City's new Budokan was celebrated in Tanabe City (Wakayama Prefecture) on October 24th (Sat). The "Ueshiba Morihei Memorial Mu...seum" was established as an annex of the new Budokan, so visitors can easily access information about the Founder's life and achievements. Aikido Hombu Dojo-cho Ueshiba Mitsuteru attended the ceremony as Doshu Ueshiba Moriteru's representative. Dojo-cho received the letter of appointment from the Mayor of Tanabe City (Mr. Manago Mitsutoshi) on behalf of Doshu, who had been appointed as Honorary Director of the Ueshiba Morihei Memorial Museum. Afterwards, Dojo-cho read Doshu's greeting letter. 1024

01.01.2022 Maai Maai, written as , is a complex concept referring to the physical distance or space between an army or combatants, and the exact timing required to make ...an effective attack. means a period of time, interval space, or between, while means come together, or to meet. Therefore, maai could be explained as be the distance at which your mind must remain alert and focused on determining the exact striking timing and position, the right distance and moment to execute an effective move. Each army or combatant will have differing maai. Some will be faster, allowing for a greater distance, slower brigades or warriors may prefer shorter distances in which to make effective their attack, without allowing the opposition to strike first. The right positioning and distance that can also affect the oppositions' moves. Basically, you can upset them mentally by distancing yourself, or getting too close. In all, it could be described as the space and time between armies / combatants...that's my interpretation. The Japanese idiom(Teki yori touku, jubun yori chikaku) literal translation, Further than the enemy, closer than yourself is often used in various martial forms, especially kendo, to explain this situation.

01.01.2022 Yamada Sensei in New York USA 1966

01.01.2022 Clip from the 1961 movie "Aikido." Here we see the Iwama dojo before the extension and Saito Sensei is leading class under the watchful eye of the Founder. One ...obvious observation is the constant Kiai from students and O Sensei. I mention this because not long ago I attended a seminar in Europe with one of my students, she got told off for using Kiai while practicing... the comment from one of organizing instructors was, "It is not necessary." We must of course respect other dojo traditions; however, we always Kiai in our dojo :) Can anyone name the students lined up with boken? Video source: Aikido Journal See more
