24.01.2022 Dear Fern Tree residents, I apologise for adding to your load of messages about Coronavirus. But I wanted to share my perspective as a local GP. You will all be aware of advice about hand hygiene, social distancing and so on. I have attached the latest Tasmanian Government advice about Coronavirus. I believe that NOW is the time to take this advice seriously, especially regarding social distancing. Now is the time to avoid all unnecessary movement in public. ... This is a good time for us to consider who in our area is older, or lives alone. It would be good if we can all think about how we can look after each other in the coming weeks and months. This might include phone calls or emails to check on or cheer up a neighbour, or food deliveries, etc. Likewise if you need help please dont hesitate to contact a neighbour rather than putting yourself or others at risk. I know that our Fern Tree community has worked together well, especially thanks to our local Bushfire Ready Neighbour Group convenors. I hope we can all continue to work together as a community in what may be a tough time ahead. Best wishes, (name removed), local GP. https://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au//infectious_diseas/coronavirus

21.01.2022 This survey closes on 25 May. Its great if walkers AND bike riders contribute to this survey. Have your say! When physical distancing restrictions relax, you can also help build some of these tracks - its a great way for a family to enjoy working and learning together. Just look up Trackcare - Hobart.

14.01.2022 As you will have seen from the sign at the Tavern, and it will be no surprise to anyone who is aware of the global pandemic situation, unfortunately our upcoming events as advertised in our very recent newsletter, the Book Fair, Working Bee and of course the AGM, have all been cancelled. Your Community Association Committee will be discussing how to resolve the situation in regards to their ongoing membership, although with no public events happening, there is obviously going to be a lot less work for us all anyway! Thank you for all your support. Stay safe & healthy everyone.

12.01.2022 Traffic congestion at the closed boom gate to kunanyi / the Mountain last Wednesday led to this terrible example of road rage... we have never experienced anything like this in Fern Tree before. If anyone has any info on this car please report to the police.

10.01.2022 Visitors, if the 2 electronic road signs say the mountain road is closed, please dont try to drive up Pillinger Drive- youll get stuck as theres nowhere to turn around. Find a different place to park & walk, ie Neika, or walk up from Old Farm Rd.

06.01.2022 Are you interested in how to better manage 500,000+ visitors to the mountain? kunanyi / Mt Wellington is the most visited natural place in Tassie and before COV...ID the strain of visitor numbers was starting to show - what is the best way to manage visitors to the mountain in the future? Council has been thinking about this over many years and an idea has emerged for a visitor hub at Halls Saddle (pic is artist impression of the centre). Before you take a position for or against, please have a read of the work that has been done on this idea...and then I would love to hear your thoughts! - you can read the materials at this link http://hobart.infocouncil.biz//PR_11062020_AGN_1233_AT_WEB
05.01.2022 We strongly recommend this exhibition, open till 14 Sept in the Long Gallery. "For the first time, from this exceptional collection, over 100 pieces have been selected to show us The Mountain as the Grists have come to know it: not only a superbly beautiful natural landscape but also as an extraordinarily rich cultural landscape."
04.01.2022 Have you seen this stunning banner for NAIDOC week? Did anybody see who put it there? It's in an awesome spot on the big corner just below Pillinger Drive near the bus stop. I've seen several people stop for photos. By the way, if people are wondering why the bus stop was moved, it is felt the new location is less at risk of being wiped out by a car sliding on ice on the corner.
03.01.2022 On 3 Feb, work started on new fuel breaks to protect properties on Clegg Rd, Pillinger Dv & Stephenson / Lapoinya. This letter was received by adjacent properties; FERN TREE BUSHFIRE FUEL BREAK WORKS As part of the Citys program to manage and reduce the risks of bushfire ... improve fuel breaks in the Fern Tree area, using the Tasmania Fire Service Fuel Break Guidelines.... Bushfire hazard reduction within wet forests, as is predominant in the Fern Tree area, is problematic with the use of hazard reduction burns not feasible. Reduction of fuel loads is therefore required to be undertaken through the establishment and maintenance of green breaks through the targeted removal of trees and under storey shrubs. Works will be undertaken at the following locations over the coming weeks: - Clegg Road - Pillinger Drive (near 1 Pillinger Drive and 699 Huon Road) - Stephenson Place/Lapoinya Road
