25.01.2022 Nice work, Queensland! Because of your great work in following good hygiene practices, socially distancing and getting the flu shot, flu numbers this year are s...ignificantly lower than what they have been in the last five flu seasons and are 84% lower than this time last year! Research suggests that Queenslanders have greatly improved their hygiene practices, which has helped to stop the spread of flu in our community.

21.01.2022 Croup is common in children between the ages of six months and five years and is more common in winter. While most instances can be treated safely at home, crou...p can worsen quickly so its important to know the sign and symptoms. Try these tips for caring for your child at home. Keep your child calm its important they remain calm; if they are distressed, symptoms will worsen. Keep your child upright sitting up can help them breathe easier. Give them some childrens paracetamol (in recommended doses) - this can help lower their fever and make them feel better if they are unsettled. No steam treatment or vaporiserssteamy rooms (such as bathrooms) and vaporisers DO NOT help croup. If your child is having problems breathing, seek urgent medical attention.

07.01.2022 Mackay Base Hospital Dr Chidi Onyeforo is today busting the myth the COVID-19 testing is painful. Dr Chidi said if anyone was symptomatic, they should get t...ested and fears around the swab were unfounded. When testing was first introduced, the world-wide standard was to take a swab of the space behind the nose which can be painful for some people, he said. We now know that its just as accurate to test using a deep nasal swab, which swabs the inside of the nose itself and is less uncomfortable for the person being tested. Dr Chidi said the nasal swab technique was also suitable for children. Swabbing is completely safe and appropriate for children and we can modify as needed so that we dont cause any unnecessary trauma, he said. Early intervention not only means we can stop community spread, but it also means that we can monitor an individual and manage the virus and try to prevent it from becoming worse. In most instances we will able to manage a patient in their home without admission to hospital, and all testing and treatment is completely confidential. Dr Chidi said testing was crucial to catch any outbreak of COVID-19 early. Testing is our best defence against an outbreak, he said. If you are unwell and have any symptoms of COVID-19, no matter how mild, please get tested. Dr Chidi said Mackay Hospital and Health Service had established a dedicated COVID-19 hotline for enquiries for businesses and the community. The hotline, 4885 5666, is staffed by nurses who screen people for COVID-19 and if a test is required books people in for testing. Dr Chidi has also urged members of the community who are tested for COVID-19, but continue to display symptoms, to follow-up with their GP.
