25.01.2022 How far can we shoot this projectile? Is there a golden angle? Lets find out! Watch on as a hilarious team of physicists search for answers! This student film was made as an AIM project- from the Scientific Investigations and Media Production. We set out to produce science YouTube videos as a resource about complex concepts, to help students and teachers in our community. Enjoy the first (of many to come), Awesome Science Show episode!!!

23.01.2022 Yr 10 Science Foundation - space engineers of the future - designed rovers fit for the planet Mars and it's atmosphere and tested them on potential surfaces. Great job students... "one small step for ..."

22.01.2022 As part of the UQ Science Ambassador program our FG science student leaders were required to submit a report of their leadership journey through 2020. They decided to use a video format for maxium impact. Check it out! #scienceatferny

21.01.2022 At the moment, Year 7's are investigating changes to an object’s motion- which is caused by unbalanced forces, including Earth’s gravitational attraction, acting on the object...

21.01.2022 BIOLOGY CAMP 2020 #2 The highly anticipated Biology Camp was one of the highlights of the Science calendar this year! Both the students and staff were incredibly thankful that the timing worked out perfectly and we were able to enjoy the action-packed learning experience at Springbrook National Park. After quickly settling in, we got straight to work doing some weeding in a revegetation area, followed by a viewing of David Attenborough’s latest documentary or State of Origin ...Game 1. Our second day consisted of a walk along the Twin Falls trail, where we were spoiled with spectacular views and a diverse range of ecosystems to observe. This was followed by the completion of our mandatory practicals, where we utilised a variety of surveying techniques to analyse the distribution and abundance of species in different environments. Our final day saw us learning about the role mangroves play in the surrounding ecosystems and visiting David Fleay Wildlife Park to observe keystone species in action. I would like to thank all of the teachers who gave up time with their families to come on camp with us! Most importantly, I would like to thank Mrs Gregory for all of the hard work she put into the organisation behind the scenes. Biology Camp was easily the highlight of my school year and I implore all future Biology students to take advantage of this opportunity! Written by Cassidy Ratcliff, Science Ambassador. See more

17.01.2022 Another terrific throwback! Term 1- these Year 7's learnt about lab safety! They also learnt all about mixtures, including solutions, that contain a combination of pure substances that can be separated using a range of techniques! :)

17.01.2022 The Science and Mathematics faculties wish all the Year 12's the very best for their external assessment, especially our science-maths students who are doing 50% exams! Our Year 12 students were lucky enough to receive personalised GOOD LUCK messages from Dr Gurion Ang from The University of Queensland and former Ferny School Captain, Jack Hill.

16.01.2022 After the COVID isolation, Year 7's learnt about the phases of the Moon and renewable resources! Check out these funky Earth Science experiments!

16.01.2022 Girl power! These Year 9 girls did a great job today dissecting kidneys in class and learning all about how the kidneys filter our blood and balance the water in our bodies in a process called homeostasis.

11.01.2022 Year 8 scientists are studying chemistry! Specifically, they're investigating chemical changes which involves substances reacting to form new substances, and also about the properties of the different states of matter that can be explained in terms of the motion and arrangement of particles! Look at all these experiments!

09.01.2022 FGSHS Science Society is always eager to find out what our past students are up to! Jessica Morrison is studying Environmental Science (Ecology and Conservation) at the University of Queensland. We recently asked Jess some questions about her pathway post Ferny; here is what she had to say:... ? Chemistry, Biology and Agricultural Science. I loved learning new things about our world and how the subjects improved my writing and science communication skills. ? I’m studying Environmental Science (Ecology and Conservation). I was always interested in conservation and it’s importance especially in our world today. I decided to choose a degree that matched my interests, and had classes that sounded interesting and fun to me! ? I’ve worked on the Queensland Turtle Conservation Project Worked at UQ’s Hiddenvale wildlife facility Undertaken conservation, ecology and public outreach (in terms of environmental education) in South Africa and Botswana. Working with Parks, wildlife vets, anti-poaching units, etc. Field research on K’Gari (Fraser Island) work on mangrove, spiders/crabs and the unique chronosequence present on the island. Most recently have been accepted to work in the ecological cascades lab at UQ working on the ecology of south-east Asian mammals so hopefully you’ll see my publication next year! ? I hope to eventually end back up in Africa working on the conservation of megafauna and possibly researching human-wildlife mitigation strategies as part of this. ********** Thanks Jess! We really appreciate you sharing your journey post school and inspiring others to follow their passions. Legendary!

08.01.2022 Energy transfer through different mediums can be explained using wave and particle models- which is what the Year 9's have been investigating! The colours we see are reflected wavelengths that of which an object emits. White is the reflection of all the colour wavelengths whilst black is the absence of colour reflection- all visible wavelengths are absorbed...

07.01.2022 BIOLOGY CAMP 2020 Year 11 Biology students have settled in nicely at Springbrook and are having a fabulous time on camp. They had a talk from a Ranger and got their hands dirty doing some weeding in a re-vegetated area and have just completed the beautiful Twin Falls hike, learning about the diverse ecosystems that exist in the area.

05.01.2022 Need some science fun these holidays? Why not participate in an immersive marine zoology talk! Our former School Captain (Jack Hill) is involved with these awesome activities at UQ. Really recommended for all our senior biologists as it links heavily to the Unit 3 content! :)

04.01.2022 Year 9's have been conducting field studies as part of their ecology unit! They have been considering how energy flows into and out of an ecosystem via the pathways of food webs, and how it must be replaced to maintain the sustainability of the system. Year 9's have also explored the interactions between organisms such as predator/prey, parasites, competitors, pollinators and disease.

04.01.2022 Huge congratulations to Cassidy for being elected as the 2021 Senior Science Leader!!! Your hard work, passion and dedication towards our science community has paid off. It is an outstanding achievement which we are extremely proud of. It is in the utter most confidence that we strongly believe, you will succeed in honouring our school. We wish you the best of luck, in what will be, another fantastic year of science at Ferny!... On behalf of the FG Science Society community and the FG Science Faculty, , .

03.01.2022 The Biology unit of Year 8 is about cells being the basic units of living things; they have specialised structures and functions! Check out these young scientists using microscopes to examine cells!

02.01.2022 Rocks rocks rocks! Year 8's learn about sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks which contain minerals and are formed by processes that occur within Earth over a variety of timescales! Check out this fun and tasty experiment- cookie mining!
