20.01.2022 A message to all fertility patients: Over the past 14yrs I have held hands and supported thousands of women and couples on their journey to parenthood. For many its been a long one, for others just a brief moment of distress. During the process we try not to have the conversation about what happens if the end result isnt a child. We stay positive and optimistic. Sometimes for a very long time. However, for some, the end result isnt what they planned. Not everyone is succes...sful in their pursuit. Its truly heartbreaking and often theres not a lot of support. But its a huge reality for some. I know this because my husband and I werent successful in our dream of parenthood either. My reason for this post is to encourage those, that have come to the end of the fertility road, to look inside and find the place within themselves where strength lies and find some new dreams for your future. This life is blessed with opportunities and now you can explore them. It takes time, but eventually you will find a different and exciting new way of being. Trust me. 07.01.2022 Meditation: a lot of people swear by it, and a lot of people shudder at the mention of the word. What comes to mind when you think of meditation? 1hr of sitting cross-legged in silence; 2 minutes of watching your breath; a walk in nature with no distractions; or an uncomfortable and forced stillness? Most people think of meditation as a form of physical relaxation and zen. However, the latest studies are showing that actual changes in the brains structure may be why peopl...e experience improvements and benefits beyond just the token relaxation. A recent study concluded that meditation actually CHANGES the gray-matter in your brain. The 8 week study conducted by Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital specifically noted that the gray-matter in the hippocampus of the brain, the area responsible for learning and memory capacity, increased in density, as well as other parts of the brain involved in self-awareness, introspection and compassion. Participants incorporated 30 minutes of audio-guided meditation per day, and practiced non-judgemental awareness of sensations, feelings and state of mind. A classic reason for resistance to meditation can be peoples struggle with emptying their mind and clearing their thoughts. Our brains are busy these days, I get it. For some, that even sounds impossible. But the misconception about meditation is that it requires the empty mind, the 1hr of your day, and that unless you do it a certain way, you wont reap the same benefits. The beauty of meditation is that there is no right or wrong. Consider it more as a state of being rather than of doing. One can be engaged in meditation on a walk, for 2 minutes in your car before your next appointment or meeting, or as you drift off to sleep at night. A handy method is the 5:5:5:5 (you can substitute any number in there but 5 is a good place to start). Inhale for 5, hold the breath for 5, exhale for 5, hold the empty for 5, and then repeat. Guided meditation is also a great option; I love using an app called Insight Timer. Its an endless library of guided meditations, with different lengths of times, styles and voices. 03.01.2022 This dish is easy to digest and warming on these cold nights. I hope you enjoy. Sweet potato, chickpea and almond tagine Serves - 2... 2 tbsp Extra virgin Olive oil or coconut oil 2 shallots, peeled and sliced 1 tsp ginger, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced. 1 tsp ground cumin cinnamon stick tsp paprika 1 tsp turmeric powder pinch salt tsp black pepper 1 tbsp. tomato paste 2 cups water or stock 3 dates, pitted, chopped 300g medium sweet potato, peeled, cut into 3 cm cubes 1 cup cauliflower florets 1 can chickpeas (400g) rinsed. lemon 2 cups cooked wholewheat cous-cous (1 cup raw to 1 cups water) Topping/garnish 2 tbsp Flaked or blanched almonds, toasted 1/3 cup Coriander leaves Method Heat oil over a medium heat. Add onions, garlic, ginger and cook for 3-5 minutes. Add spices and fry for 2 minutes, Add salt and pepper and tomato paste and stir through constantly for 1 minute. Add the stock/water and the remaining ingredients, except for lemon and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover with a lid and simmer for a further 10 -15 minutes, until sweet potato is soft. Take off the heat and stir in lemon juice and zest. Serve with fresh coriander leaves and toasted almonds on top. Tips - Use dried apricots or raisins instead of dates. Substitute the cauliflower for any other vegetables you have lying around. Zucchini, eggplant, broccoli, spinach, silverbeet. Spice it up with teaspoon of Cayenne pepper. Go for chopped cashews instead of almonds
