19.01.2022 I Am, We Are, FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS # 4000 Story Rosie’s Handler writes- Rosie is a 2 year old magic brown dog with 20 different breeds mixed throughout her family tree from chihuahua to pit bull, but at 30cm high and 9kgs ringing wet, the pit bull is hard to imagine.... Rosie enjoys long walks, chasing lizards and swimming at the local river, but most of all she loves being right next to me, especially when cuddling is involved - which it usually is. My wife and I foster dogs, taking them in and helping them grow in to lovely pets and finding their forever homes. Rosie was a foster kid too, but when she came in to care her I was in hospital for 4 months, so my wife would bring her in to spend time with me. The bond was immediate and soon Rosie spent every day and night with me, and helping me get better so we could go home together forever. I need help with life in general these days, we train daily and have been to obedience training to ensure we are a well behaved and professional team in public. Rosie is completely in tune with me, she knows when it’s time to nudge me if I’m getting anxious, when to climb on me if panic sets in, and also tell me when it’s time to exit! Rosie really steps up to her duties when her FETCH jacket goes on, she takes her tasks very seriously and isn’t easily distracted, although a lot of people do try unfortunately! At home things are more relaxed and she spends all day either cuddling or playing, although her night duties involve waking me when I have nightmares and cuddling up till we both go back to sleep. I can’t imagine my life without Rosie, we are a team, and thank goodness we found each other and FETCH.

19.01.2022 #25 I am,We are, FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS This is the #25 Story Rusty, a Chocolate Lab, is one of our youngest dogs, with one of our youngest Champion Handlers. There has been lots of dedication and training to get Rusty to his first half day of attending school. FETCH met with the class and teachers, and Rusty had some practice rides on the school bus, before his first school day. Like any young schoolies, he was exhausted that night. It’s a slow process, but this is one Team with a very big cheer squad behind them lending support and encouragement. Well done Rusty and Master L

18.01.2022 #I am, We Are, FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS A MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY On a personal note, sometimes this volunteer job feels more like a full time job on the side of my part time job ... But it’s been an amazing 10 months in the Secretary Treasurer role.. challenging and rewarding. I have met some wonderful people and been forced out of myself like never before. Whenever I feel like I am drowning or want to quit, I look at my own black ball of happiness at my feet, and know I want that opportunity for others as well. I cannot imagine this last 15 months without Serenity. She is my rock and angel, and when I walk out the front door, I am stronger because of her. She reminds me its ok, to have had enough of peopling in the shops and public in general. Most of all, she just brings me joy by being there. She has seen me through challenging times with unconditional love and patience. All of this is possible, because someone introduced me to FETCH Introduced me not just to the opportunity of having an Assistance Dog, but to the opportunity of realising I am not alone, I am not the only one, and that there are people who understand those no go days. I didn’t fit the criteria of some other associations/organisations, and they didn’t fit my needs either. I struggled with the idea of a ready made dog, I wanted a puppy I could bond with and participate in its train from the beginning. FETCH gave me that opportunity. If you know someone with a medical need that might be helped by an Assistance Dog, PLEASE tell them about FETCH.

17.01.2022 #I am, We are FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS #IN MEMORIUM Reaching and being reached by, the Community of those who understand that Life is a Challenge we may meet and manage more ably, through Assistance Dogs... FETCH Thanks these beautiful ladies for the generous donation. We will remember the kindness of you both LEANNE THOMAS At the age of 10, Leanne lost her left leg to cancer and it was amputated. This was back in the late 1960s. She was a daughter of a Vietnam Veteran who knew tough love. She was sent back to the State School where she was attending. Not only attending a ‘normal’ school but also in the School marching band. That is where our friendship grew. Leanne was a bright, bubbly person, you knew when she came into a room. She worked with Amputees and people with Special Needs. She had a big heart and put others before herself. Unfortunately my friend lost her fight with life last month. She left me instructions to seek out places that I could make donations to. Fetch came to me in the form of a very friendly owner and dog Jasper, at Stafford City. I decided this is one charity that Leanne would love. Kym Hyson

16.01.2022 # I am, We are, FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS The #33 story - the Gentle Giant Gypsy was never meant to be an Assistance Dog. ... She was brought as a family pet. Very quickly an unbreakable bond happened between Gypsy and her boy. She started to settle him when he had anxiety, would sit on him to prevent him from running and becoming hurt. The family went to an event where someone had their Assistance Dog and told them everything that the dog does to help them in the community. At this point the mum realised Gypsy was already helping her boy. She has been training for a few months now and helps her boy every day, she goes to swimming lessons, park visits, church and soon they hope she will go on any school trips.

15.01.2022 #I am. We are, FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS The #24-24 Story - Gideon, the Adorable Giant Gideon is a 3 and a half year old Rottweiler- hes a chunky boy weighing in close to 50kg. ... His favourite food is Chicken Nuggets - though they are a rare treat. He enjoys long walks, but he doesn't like sand or the water very much. He also sleeps on his mums bed to be ready for action at all times. He may also sit all over his mum while she's in her recliner too. He's very spoiled. Gideons mum has had him since he was 12 weeks old, she needed him to be super well behaved because he is such a big boy- so Gideon has completed many obedience programs and further training to ensure his manners and behaviour is awesome at all times, and that his mum has full control of him at all times. Then Gideons mum had some problems, and needed him to become an Assistance Dog when he was 18 months old, and Gideon stepped up for duty and FETCH helped them to become a team. It was easy for them because Gideons mum and Gideon have an incredible bond to each other- and Gideon was a natural at learning all the tasks he needed to gain his Jacket. As with all Assistance dogs, and dogs in general Gideon is always learning new things. He loves hearing people in the shops saying how beautiful or handsome he is, and he gets a lot of treats from his mum as reward markers for all his hard work in crowded places like the shops. Sometimes people wonder what Assistance dogs actually do and how can they actually help. Gideon has several ways that he helps , and Gideon has lots of ways he helps in public - but things you can see most often is Gideon helping his mum by putting his paw in his mums lap- to get her attention to him and off what's upsetting her. He will also stand and lean heavily on his mum to make her feel comfort via pressure. He might even nuzzle in and give her a cuddle when she's standing still. Gideon wears a Canny Collar. Which is a fantastic way to keep control of Gideon in the safest and most humane way to lead him. It has a strap that does wrap around his snoot. It is not a muzzle, he can eat and drink and give kisses. More information on the canny collar can be found in FETCH posts. Sometimes when they are in public spaces his mum doesn’t cope well, and She doesn’t want people to be offended if She is unable to be polite because she is in a heightened state. Gideon is a much loved family member, and he feels a lot of pride and satisfaction in his work.

15.01.2022 OCTOBER is Mental Health Awareness Month. FETCH chose October as ASSISTANCE DOG AWARENESS Month to coincide with these events, as many of our Handlers Teams can relate to how their AD aides their mental health every day. This year, FETCH will enter a Team in the Virtual Mental Health Awareness Walk. Our own Awareness Walk will support MAFA raising public understanding and awareness of mental health issues and needs. ... When the Team link is posted, we are asking everyone to match $for$ donations. Donate to FETCH in October, to support our AWARENESS Month, and if you can, also donate to MHFA as well. The FETCH Team link will be up soon. We encourage all our Teams to wear Gold, Green and Orange ribbons for October to identify our support. Be creative how you do that and please post your photos in the comments, rocking the FETCH colours, and the orange if you so choose Thanks everyone https://www.mhfa.org.au/C/national-mental-health-month-2020 https://www.walkforawareness.org.au/

13.01.2022 #1 I am, We are, FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS This is the #1 story Meet the star of F.E.T.C.H. Assistances Dog Inc. Lots of people know him already, yes it’s Hoover. ... Hoover gets his Handler out into the shops and keeps him cool headed. In a few of these photos is Snoopy. Not many people know, but Snoopy was the very first dog donated to a veteran, when FETCH was first founded. Snoopy is Hoover’s nephew, so when they get together there’s trouble everywhere. Hoover also wakes his Handler up at night when he has nightmares and when he can’t sleep, he is there to keep him company, that’s why Hoover sleeps so much. Our dogs are special, and all do something different, keep going and enjoy your mate as much as our #1 Handler does.

12.01.2022 #I Am, We Are, FETCH ASSISTANCE DOGS #A Lifesaving Story Somewhere just beneath that line where consciousness and unconsciousness meet, I felt nudging and licking. Just awareness. Not enough to rouse me from my stupor. That required energy I didn’t have & the darkness returned. It can feel a welcoming place, when your brain is not fully functioning ... The next thing I could acknowledge was something pushing under my left arm & a weight on my chest. It would push push push, and wait, over and over again, push push wait. Until I was sufficiently conscious to reach for my monitor. Heart Rate 26. I have to move. I have to sit up. But I can’t. I don’t have the energy. The darkness is slipping back. The warm weight on my chest slides away & I am giving in to the darkness. I am too tired Four Paws & 29kg land on my chest over and over, interspersed with licks and nudges to my face. She is not giving in, she knows what she has to do I am awake. Tired and groggy, but awake My Heart Rate is 47 I reach for my guardian. She is still not satisfied. She knows I must sit up. I must drink some water & deep breathe to raise the O2 levels. I struggle upright. She watches she knows it’s really hard, to not just lie dow and go back to sleep. She won’t let me. Only when I pick up the water bottle and monitor, does she relax. I don’t have the energy to get up yet. But I won’t lie down again either. I am ok. She is ok. We are ok. This night, she only had to do this once. It was a good night. Many many nights, it’s over and over. A few months ago, the remote monitor I was wearing recorded her resuscitating me 17 times. The hospital was incredulous. Without her, I would not have survived that night It’s just one more day in our journey together. We are a FETCH AD Team
