24.01.2022 Very pleased with the result of this little Rosella piece. I had originally planned on adding tiny hints of color but I chickened out/ ended up liking the results I achieved straight grey scale. It took around 10 hours to complete and will be one in a large series of small pieces destined for my September exhibition.
24.01.2022 So far I have only been sharing sneak peaks of completed colour pieces for my solo exhibition in September, but I couldn't resist sharing this one. Couldn't be happier with the result.
23.01.2022 Working on this little cutie tonight before launching back into pet portraits after a 10 month break to work on exhibition pieces.
22.01.2022 Di at Todds Tasty Treats in Lavington has been kind enough to let me use some of her counter space to sell my gift cards. 1 for $5 or 5 for $20. Some people like to use them as gift cards, some people collect them or frame them as a cheaper alternative to prints. I have a whole stack of cards from artists I admire and they will be pinned to my inspiration board in the new studio. Todds is a great shop to visit if you are looking for healthy dog and/or cat treats or raw species appropriate meals. Todds also sells lots of great toys that are awesome for environmental enrichment. Support two small businesses in one stop :)
22.01.2022 "Rainbow Lorikeets", 30cm x 30cm acrylic on linen, available now, DM for price :) Couldn't be happier with how they turned out, I have been working toward this style for the last 2 years and I've finally found it. It felt so good to work with paint and brushes on stretched linen again after a long LONG break.
21.01.2022 A very green painting of a Rosella. Acrylic and oils :)
20.01.2022 Working away on an Eastern Spinebill. Absolutely love drawing these little guys. This one captured in motion, hovering while feeding on the nectar from flowers.
19.01.2022 Black and white wing study. I have been thinking about how I can make a piece feel slightly more contemporary with an interesting or unusual crop.
17.01.2022 Something a little bit different....
16.01.2022 Thankyou for all the incredible feedback on my lorikeet painting yesterday It can be scary sharing artwork at the best of times and especially scary sharing work in a style I'm not known for, so I appreciate all the support Here are some black and white clownfish in pastel.
15.01.2022 Temporary "studio" space is finally set up. Not perfect but good enough for now. Still haven't unpacked any paint supplies but that will have to wait until I move into the big studio next year.
15.01.2022 I still have 2-3 places available for Christmas commissions. If anyone would like to place and order I recommend doing so before the end of the week.
14.01.2022 This lovely big space will soon be converted into my new studio. I can't even handle how excited I am. It has a north facing sliding glass door which will open up onto a paved courtyard complete with water feature, fire pit and fairy lights. We have put in the connections for a split system (I can't function at all when I'm cold), fitted it out with power points galore and plenty of downlights with daylight globes (yellow and white light should be avoided in art studios as t...hey change the way the colors look). Gallery picture rails will be installed throughout so that I can easily display my work and host mini exhibitions from home. Eventually I will be able to run small classes from here as well. Having a designated work area will help me separate home and work life as well as increase my overall productivity as I won't have to continuously set up and pack up as I do now. AND maybe one of the most exciting aspects is that I will be able to PAINT again - because making a mess won't be an issue See more
13.01.2022 WIP of another beautiful Rainbow Lorikeet
12.01.2022 Working away on a cute little pair of Budgies this evening. I'm not entirely sure of the best way to tackle the black stripes on the back of my second Budgie...best thing about paint, if I make a mistake, I can just paint over it and try again. Hope you are all well, particularly those in Victoria. Art and creativity is a great distraction and a great way to express any feelings you might be having, even if what you create "isn't good", it's still great therapy. All you need is a pencil/pen, some paper and some time.
11.01.2022 This iris was drawn realistically, but the whole time I was working on it, it felt like an abstract. It wasn't until the very end that it started to look like a flower... although I think some viewers may still have trouble making sense if it. Love work that blurs the line between realism and abstraction.
11.01.2022 I almost didn't share this one, I was unhappy with it two days ago. When I work in realism it is easy to measure the success of a piece. But knowing if a piece is good or bad, successful or a failure in this style is new to me. Then I got some timely advice from the very talented Tracie MacVean Artwork, she said, "Bec, whatever you create or how often you get to create, it doesn’t matter. Just find joy in the play and freedom of art". Eventually I'll learn how to measure my success, in the mean time, I'm just going to focus on enjoying the process. "Sulphur Crested Cockatoo", mixed media on linen, 30cm x 30cm.
11.01.2022 When your art hero critiques your art work.... Skip to 1:24:00 to see what she had to say. Am I self taught? Yes. Did I teach myself by watching and rewatching and rewatching this artists videos almost everyday for the last 5 years? Also yes! This is hands down one of the most exciting things to happen in my career so far. https://youtu.be/s_gmNA1rNTM
10.01.2022 I have graduated, from sketchbook to linen!
10.01.2022 "Lorikeet II" 40cm x 60cm Acrylic and Ink on Linen. Pretty sure I'm happy to call this one finished but I'll come back to it in a few days with fresh eyes.
09.01.2022 Did I say I wasn't going to break out the paint until next year? Well, my self control lasted less than a day. Realism I reserve for pastels, paint is for play and self expression. I've been having a ball in my sketchbook working on developing a style that both captures the subject and gives me a bit of room to play with paint. Sketchbooks are a great place to experiment with no pressure - I'm not so worried about the end result as I am about the process that go me there.
08.01.2022 Today I had the privilege of judging The Art Of Dogs Art Prize 2020 alongside photographer Nat Ord and dog trainer Scott Harris. It was a valuable experience that has given me a new appreciation for how challenging it is to be on the other side of art competitions. Congratulations to the winners! The Art Of Dogs exhibition opens Saturday 7th March at 2.00pm, Creators Artspace (In the laneway beside La Maison, Gateway Village, Wodonga).
08.01.2022 Progress on my Budgies...I think I like this direction? I was originally planning on making it mixed media and adding some oil paint and oil pastel for textural variety, interest, depth and all that good stuff. I was also toying with the idea if adding gold leaf. But now I'm tempted to leave it as is... I'm really not sure. I'll leave it for a few days and come back with fresh eyes.
06.01.2022 It's hard to believe I haven't posted here since March! Initially, when restrictions kicked in and my girls were sent home from school, I was determined to successfully juggle home schooling, working, packing (to move house) and on top of it all continue working toward my exhibition at the same rapid pace I had set in the first few months of 2020. Unsurprisingly, I burnt out. Fast. So I made the uncharacteristic decision to stop the juggling, focus on my kids and put art asid...e for the duration of their homeschooling. It was the best decision I could have made. I've been able to use this time to reestablish a good work, life balance and relearn to prioritize my health over my compulsive productivity. Having said all that I really missed drawing. Stepping away from art for a while reminded me how much value it does add to my life when it's balanced with all the other equally important aspects. I've had to accept that I've lost to much time to be ready for a September exhibition, so I have moved it to April 2021. While the global impact of the virus has been devastating, for me personally it was a timely reminder to slow down, enjoy the moment and be a little kinder to myself. Now, back to the drawing board! But first, a quiet cup of tea in a Van Gogh mug, on a Picasso coaster while admiring my most prized possession, my Catherine Stewart painting - art is everywhere in this house.... See more
