05.01.2022 Very pleased to announce João Biscainho has joined the CHAUFFEUR family! The Illusion of Disillusion (2013) engraved swordfish bill 8.5 x 11 x 91 cm In The Illusion of Disillusion, a swordfish bill is engraved with the nouns of the title; the words are set against each other, reflecting and opposing in turns.... The sculpture plays with the relationship between materiality and language by applying a synecdoche - a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole - to an object. The gruesomely truncated swordfish’s blade represents the entire animal. The status of the fragment is that of something ‘marvelous’, a relic from a mythical, submerged realm. Hereby, the artist alludes to the early collecting and classifying practices inherent in the Cabinets of Curiosity, which features naturalia and artificialia, alongside one and another, while the engraving recalls the practice of Scrimshaw, the carving of images and text by mariners of whale and fish bone on their long sea voyages. - Extract from catalogue, Joao Biscainho: Future Nothingness at SE8 Gallery, London UK (2017) #swordfish #sculpture #joaobiscainho #portugeseartist #contemporaryart @ Darlinghurst, New South Wales
