25.01.2022 In the Great Perfection of Wisdom Treatise, Nagarjuna asked this question: The perfection of wisdom is the teaching for bodhisattva-mahasattvas. Why did the Buddha address Sariputra but not the bodhisattvas? According to the text, there are two main reasons: First, among the Buddha's disciples, Sariputra was foremost in wisdom. The Buddha stated that if Sariputra's wisdom was divided into sixteen parts, all sentient beings would not amount to even one. Secondly, Sariputra att...ainined Arhatship by teaching the Dharma to Ascetic Longnails, and after half a month, Sariputra began to turn the Dharma wheel. As a practitioner, he penetrated all phenomena and possessed all manner of wisdom. Given all these numerous virtues, this is why the Buddha taught such profound dharma as the perfection of wisdom to Sariputra even though he was an Arhat. 14.01.2022 1. Immeasurable Loving-kindness In dealing with people, one should always have a benevolent mind that gives others peace and happiness, and shows empathy and willingness to serve others. During the late Qing Dynasty, there was a chess master who hung... a plaque in front of his house that proclaimed Unbeatable. One day during an expedition, Minister Zuo Zongtang passed by the chess masters house and noticed the plaque, he decided to challenge the chess master and consequently defeated him thrice in a row. Smugly, the minister said, You lost three times in a row! Its time to take down that plaque! Several months later, Zuo returned victoriously and passed by the house again, only to see that the plaque was still there. In reply to the ministers inquiry about why the plaque had not been removed, the chess master said, May I invite you to another game? This time, he defeated Zuo thrice in a row. The chess master then explained, Last time you visited, I did not wish to demoralize you, for you were headed to a battle. Therefore, I intentionally lost the game. Now that you have returned victorious, I need no longer show you any mercy. The chess master knew when to win and when to lose. Sometimes, losing is winning, and winning is losing. 01.01.2022 [Dharma Abode] The Dharma is one's home sweet home. The spirit of taking the Dharma as one's home is to view the Dharma as where one resides and is nurtured. Doing so would be the meaning of Dharma abode. Most people take printed sutras or established principles as the only form of Dharma; some even believe that expounding the sutras is the only way to propagate the Buddha's teachings. But where is the Dharma? The Dharma is found in the vast emptiness of this world; all ...worldly phenomena are the Dharma. As the saying goes, "Lush green bamboo are wondrous truths; the luxuriant yellow flower is nothing but prajna," all life and vitality are said to be the Dharma. The Dharma in all its forms is the teachings of the Buddha, liberating one from defilement, suffering, while increasing one's wisdom and self-reliance. Therefore, the Buddha teaches one to rely on the self, rely on the Dharma, and rely on nothing else. When one takes refuge in the Triple Gem and upholds the Five Precepts, the Triple Gem and the Five Precepts are the Dharma. The Dharma should not be viewed as an abstract ideology, but rather as the vast and formless truth. The Dharma has many layers, the mundane world has worldly teachings, and the supramundane world has transcendental teachings. Likewise, lay practitioners have lay teachings, and monastics have teachings specific to the Sangha. The precepts can be likened to the law, and every line in the sutras likened to a teacher. As such, they are all embodiments of the Dharma. The term "'Dharma abode' likens the Dharma to a home where one lives. Of course, one can live in a villa, a skyscraper, or an apartment, but the Dharma is not in these places. As the Buddhist saying goes, The Three Realms are like a burning house; living in a world filled with the Five Desires and Six Dusts is like living in a burning house, for one cannot attain enlightenment. Therefore, one must abide in the Dharma. A person with faith, lives with faith as their abode. A person who chants the sutras, lives with chanting the sutras as their abode. Therefore, "Dharma Abode"' means to take the Dharma as one's home; one lives in the Dharma and takes it as one's house.
