21.01.2022 Plating Up Time! We’ve finally plated up the Utopia M enclosure we installed into the boot of Jason’s absolutely flawless E36. Jason didn't want anything too outlandish, as out'n'out bling doesn't suit the style of this beautifully restored old Bemmer. Therefore just some neat black on black with a little M stripe detail thrown in does the trick nicely, all of which can be hidden away by folding the original boot floor down. :)

15.01.2022 Anatomy Of An OEM Upgrade Part 2 The Amplifier. Match produce a whole range of amplifiers encompassing numerous channel configurations, built to suit many different European cars. If you own a BMW however with a 676 stereo or similar, then the easiest upgrade is the UP 7BMW; as it’s made specifically for the BMW. You simply choose the right patch lead for your particular vehicle, pop said amplifier in place of the OEM device and away you go. That said we like to take it a l...ittle further and first upgrade the loom with an additional earth that allows for more current flow. We then politely dispose of the factory loaded tune profile and start again from scratch. This allows us to retune the software in its entirety, in order to perfectly suit the customer’s car and personal preferences. With this in mind we set to designing a system that would not only sound exemplary but also handle those serious volumetric demands when so required. Starting up front; the higher frequency tunes come courtesy of a Focal 165KRX3 component set.

08.01.2022 Anatomy Of An OEM Upgrade Part 3 The Doors. With the UP 7BMW amplifier secured in place and happily working away we thenceforth turn our attention to the doors. The kit used in this particular car is the Match MS 42C-BMW.2, which is a plug and play component set designed for the M3. We begin by sound deadening both the inner and outer skin of the doors. From there we add a diffusion tile and various bandpass gaskets to change the door configuration from an eighth order to f...ourth order; thus allowing the kinetic energy from the lower midrange to emanate through the grille to the driver, rather than simply echoing about within the confines of the door trim. 07.01.2022 Pillar Progress Trim Colour & Grille Contrast Testing. Sadly we’ve still not got around to finishing these pillars. See that’s the conundrum stores face when undertaking work on their own cars; other work must always come first. We’ll get there eventually though. Recently we’ve been playing with various trim colours ranging from light, medium and dark grey through to more exotics like dove grey, light sea grey and azure grey. We eventually settled on light grey and performed this quick test trim. You’ll also note the cardboard grille cutouts sitting in there for contrast testing; to that end we've now made a start on the presses for them. Not long to go now.

Nick’s requirement for the back end of his 'Pure White' Golf was similar to that of the front; he wanted clean subbass and plenty of it, preferably using his existing equipment. With these prerequisites in mind we got to designing a boot that would not only look OEM’ish and provide him with an absolute ton of kinetic force; it also retains at least some semblance of space for a shopping bag or two!

04.01.2022 Anatomy Of An OEM Upgrade Part 4 The Midbasses. Hitherto we’ve covered the concept, the amplifier and the door speakers; this in turn leads us to the underseat mounted Match UP W8BMW-S midbass drivers. Now one must be careful when speaking about drivers of this ilk because they’re often referred to as subwoofers. Now don’t mishear us; they do deliver kinetic force aplenty. Likewise, the low frequency range extension is also impressive. However if we’re completely honest wit...h ourselves and take into account both physics and their intrinsic motor structure; sadly they’ll never competently output that true bottom octave frequencies. Not to worry though; after all that’s where 'actual' subwoofers come in and will be part 5 of this feature. Back to these drivers though; for they do offer midbass in spades! When installing them we first conduct our standard acoustic measurements before lining the OEM enclosures with resonant paint and installing a pair of aperiodic membranes into the sidewall ports. Once that’s done you simply plug ‘em in, torque the seats back up, give the phase and time alignment a little tinker within the processor to align them with the door speakers and boom; hello chest thump!
