20.01.2022 ALCOHOL RANDOM BREATH TESTING The Boating Industry Association of Western Australia Is the voice of the marine industry in Western Australia it has many key obj...ectives relating to the development and promotion of boating and other aquatic pastimes. One major key objective is to promote safe boating. Working together with Marine Safety, WA Water Police and DEFS in educating boaters. The educational focus on anti-social behaviour, reduce complacency on the water, wearing of lifejackets along with best safe practice improvements and education has helped reduce risks to persons in boating and aquatic pastimes. The implementation of CTV cameras at boat ramps by the Department of Transport is a great initiative to enforce the intolerance of unsafe activities (Speeding, noncompliance),to ensure all boaters enjoy our waterways. There are perhaps a number of other ways to enforce safe boating and breath testing is certainly one of them. Pulling someone over in a controlled environment like a road where you can safely approach a car, provide traffic management and ensure the safety of vehicle operators, passengers police and other nearby parties is a vastly different operation than pulling a boat over. Asking a skipper to leave the controls of a vessel, perhaps come down from the fly bridge whilst his boat is adrift and not under command. Just so he can be randomly targeted for a breath test doesnt seem the safest approach. Water ways are controlled by the environment there are unseen factors at play like current, swell and wind etc etc. Imagine being pulled over in a car on a hill, being asked to get out to have your breath tested, blowing in the breathalyser and then being told all good your safe to drive you can jump back in your car and try and regain control of it. It is quite absurd when you look at the issue from this perspective. The BIA of WA has asked but has yet to receive any data relating to marine accidents and the use of alcohol. There is not perceived to be an issue of poor seamanship caused by the use of alcohol. It does not appear to be a major cause of accidents like it is on the roads. There are many documentable accidents relating to alcohol impairment and the operation of a vehicle on the roads causing harm. The thought to perhaps stop a boat that is visibly breaching a rule, for example speeding, or is negligent in the way the boat is being operated would be a more immediate improvement in safety. The operator would then be charged, fined or warned with relation to the rule being violated and breath tested at that point. This is perhaps a far safer and more manageable way of increasing the safe use of boats and our waterways. Randomly screening all operators in many cases would be decreasing the safe use of a vessel that is already being used safely. The BIA of WA actively promote safe boating and help to provide valuable perspective into many complex issues through the involvement of marine industry businesses and groups and discussion with government. After consultation with the marine industry it has become apparent that policing the actual rules in place would be a far better use of resources than to implement new procedures that are hard to manage and would have little impact to safety. A great example of this, is this Saltwater PMY 25 we worked on recently. Due to the outboard being mounted on a pod, in this instance our popular Fibrelite Transom Mount Transducer system was not a viable option. Instead we chose an in hull wet faced application. A water tight cavity was created in the hull to house the transducer and it was mounted with its face exposed to the water, flush with the contours of the hull. Seasing the day Ronja has set out on her first open ocean voyage on her UFO 34 - headed from Perth, WA to New Zealand. Leaving Perth she has already made her way past Dunsborough, Albany and across the Great Australian Bite to Portland Victoria and is currently in Port Fairy.... 09.01.2022 Lets give Jon Sanders a true West Australian welcome home on Sunday 11th February following his record breaking 10th circumnavigation of the Globe. Jon, aged 7...8, is now the only person to have completed 10 solo circumnavigations but also the oldest person to ever undertake a circumnavigation topping the record set by Japanese Sailor Minoru Saito who completed his journey aged 77 years. Were organising a Welcome Home Flotilla and wed love to see you there to pass on your congratulations to Jon after over 435 days circling the Globe. When: Sunday 11th February Time: 1:30pm ETA for Jons arrival is 2pm. Where: Boats to meet in the vicinity of South Mole Yachts and Power Boats all welcome. 08.01.2022 SMOOTH SAILING When the owner of this beautiful Salthouse 68 realised he could maximise his enjoyment out on the water by reducing the roll of the boat; he approached Fibrelite Boats to help him to achieve this goal through the installation of an ABT - TRAC stabiliser system. Installation was completed in 2 stages. ... 1 Initially work began strengthening the Hull with up to 50mm thick resin infused laminates and water tight compartments being installed in the actuator locations. 2 The second stage saw the stabilising fins and their actuators fitted along with hydraulic power packs and control systems installed into very confined areas. The new stabilizer system was commissioned without fault and minimizes the roll of the boat remarkably whilst underway and at rest. The owner and his family are now enjoying cruising the North West; and we are advised that the stabilisers are amazing!

06.01.2022 Ronjas Journey Having spent over 2 weeks at sea, we are happy (and relieved) to report Ronja has made it safely to Opua in the Bay of Islands, East Coast of New Zealand with a million stories to tell! With some hair raising experiences under her belt including hand-steering her boat into 60 + knots winds, battling 9m swells from all directions and surfing down 6m waves with water up to her hips; there were points in this adventure where in her own words she simultaneo...usly experienced her biggest nightmare and biggest dream! Having spent periods of up to 48 hours with no sleep or food battling severe weather conditions and storms, we hope Ronja gets some well deserved rest and hot meals inside of her! A massive congratulations Ronja - in her early 20s this lady really is a force to be reckoned with! Its the end of this adventure but we have no doubt that there will be many more to come!
