15.01.2022 An excerpt from Ch 3 CH 3 ARRIVAL AT THE HOTEL The Hotel was quite a distance from the Airport and about 30 mins from the centre of Accra the capital. My friend Alex, who had recommended the place, had described it as basic, cheap but nice and quite comfortable. ...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Ch 3 contd ARRIVAL AT THE HOTEL I looked up at the sign again. At least it wasn’t lit up in red. I then noticed the phone number at the bottom of the sign and checked it with mine. It was the same, I noted with a sense of relief. Maybe the driver is right. Who was I to argue with him? Local knowledge. I looked up at the sign again. The driver reading my mind said."Christians. They like the bible here." You know that the Lord Jesus said. Do unto others as you would do unto... yourself. He smiled cheekily at me. I guessed he was not a Christian. "Ok", I said as we both got out of the taxi and stepped into the quiet of the night. The hot air smelt heavy, fragrant and I thought it also tasted salty. I stretched my now aching legs that had been cramped up in the front of the taxi. The beach couldn’t be far away I thought as the faint smell of seaweed wafted across. I also smelt ripened or rotting fruit. My experience told me that there must be a fruit market close by. I stretched my arms above my head and looked up. The driver interrupted me. "Mangoes", he said. I noticed we had stopped underneath a large mango tree. The driver had opened the boot and was taking out my large backpack. As he struggled with it I noticed that the boot had been tied down with rope. I smiled. This trip would make a good story one day. We walked towards the large white wall that surrounded the Hotel. The top of the wall had bits of broken jagged glass embedded in it. Another familiar sight from my childhood. Third world security. The have’s keeping the have not’s out. We walked towards the wall. The dark shadow that broke the white of the wall was a wooden gate that pushed open easily. No lock. Just a loud squeaky hinge announced we had arrived. We walked through the open gate unchallenged. I looked up at the broken glass and smiled. A light from above the front door of the hotel lit up a concrete pathway. I could make out a small bottle that lay on the ground just inside the gate next to a lonely stool. The night watch man or security guard asleep somewhere I presumed. Yes. I was going to be safe here I said to myself smiling yet again. See more
