24.01.2022 Did you know puppies are born deaf! Their ear canals are closed for the first couple weeks. Dogs have around 18 muscles in each ear. The exact number depends on the breed. This is why they’re able to rotate, tilt, raise or lower their ears. They can also move each ear independently. They can hear about 4 times better than humans. The hearing ability of a dog is dependent on breed and age, but the average hearing range is usually around 67 Hz to 45,000 Hz (45 kHz). For human b...eings, our hearing stretches from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (or 20 kHz) but most human adults actually top out at 16k Hz. As dog ears hear higher frequency sounds than humans, they have a different acoustic perception of the world than us. Sounds that seem loud to humans can often emit high-frequency tones that can scare away dogs. Dog whistles which emit ultrasonic sound have been used in dog training since they produce sounds at frequencies higher than those audible to humans but well within the range of a dog's hearing. They can even hear the bodily vibrations of termites in the walls. Dog ears are not only used for hearingthey’re key elements of body language. Naturally held ears indicates being relaxed and comfortable. Raising ears shows alertness (and they’re usually directed toward source of interest). Up and forward ears can indicate aggression. Pulled back ears are a sign of friendliness. Ears flattened to head show submission or fear. There are about a dozen different dog ear shapes. Some shapes include: Pricked ears, like on Malamutes or German Shepherds, Blunt or round ears, like on French Bulldogs Bat ears, like on Corgis, Drop or pendant ears, like on Basset Hounds, Cocked or semi-pricked ears like on Collies or Shetland Sheepdogs, Rose ears, like on Greyhounds. . . What shape ears does your dog have? 16.01.2022 Fridays are my FAVOURITE day of the week! I’m Sandy I’m nearly 14! I like to take my time when it comes to trying new things but I realised immediately how good warm hydro treatments makes me feel! My sweet Mum and my super cool Vet Dr Rob Eureka Veterinary Clinic knew hydro was just what my body needs as I get older. So now every Friday I get my low impact hydro workout which is so much better than out-of-water exercises. Joint health is so important for older dogs like me! ...Often, the reason why we start to slow down with age and not like our walks is that our joints become stiff and very painful. Andrea my Hydrotherapist FIDO HYDRO also helped my Mum change my old food to now a delicious human-grade dog food diet, developed a home exercise plan and recommend changes to my home environment to eliminate possibility of injury! All of these things combined plays a huge part in keeping me healthy, happy and spry for my age Natasha Grundell #friday #fridayvibes #happydog #kingcharlescavalier #seniordog #seniordogsofinstagram #olddogsrule #loveyourdog #caninehydrotherapy #painrelief #lowimpact #jointhealth #exerciseplan #nutrition #yourdogmoreyears #ballaratdogs #dogsofballarat #dogsofvictoria # See more

09.01.2022 Introducing Sir Marco who is tenaciously fighting the most common cause of back pain intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). This is otherwise know as a herniated or bulging disc. There are two types of disc herniations in dogs: type I a degenerative process and tends to occur in younger dogs (especially long backed, short legged ones), although it can happen to any dog type II is also a degenerative process but it involves weakening of the fibrous ring around the disc and th...en through normal vertebral movements, the disc bulges (or protrudes). The pressure on the ligament and spinal cord occurs more slowly. This one tends to affects older large breed dogs (especially German Shepherd Dogs) The symptoms of IVDD depend on the where the bulge occurs and what it presses on. In mild cases, there may just be some pain over the site of the herniation. In severe cases, the spinal cord may be compressed enough to cause paralysis. Discs don’t herniate through activity, they simply degenerate over time and then go. The disc joints in an affected back are either diseased or they’re not. Please seek Veterinary assistance as soon as possible if your dog shows sudden changes how they move their head, how freely their limbs move, they are wobbly or weak, how easily they can sit/get up. Signs of pain include yelping, turning around, going very still, changing facial expression, licking lips or dipping away from the pressure. The longer the patient has been paralysed for, the less successful surgery is likely to be. Marco’s recovery has been incredible thanks to all the love he gets from his Mum & Dad & brother Frankie @hollyrosestudio and the amazing surgery performed @animalblooddonor U-Vet Werribee Animial Hospital #frenchbulldog #frenchie #frenchielove #frenchieoftheday #frenchiesofinstagram #tenacious #fighter #ivddrecovery #ivdd #ivddsurvivor #ivddawareness #caninerehabilitation #caninehydrotherapy @fidohydro #dogsofballarat #ballaratdogs #loveyourdog # See more

03.01.2022 Why do dogs roll in stuff? Whether it is something dead, poo, or just one of those unknown, smelly things dogs find, you’ve probably asked yourself and your dog why on earth dogs do this??? I have often thought if dogs noses are incredibly powerful, wouldn’t strong doors be overwhelming??? Does he really think of it as doggy cologne? Where did this behavior come from? Veterinarians and behaviorists are not entirely sure why dogs roll in smelly things, but they do have a few i...deas. One of the most widely known theories is that dogs do this to cover their own scent, hiding from prey or other predators. Other researchers suggests that wolves roll in scents they find particularly interesting, not to disguise themselves, but to bring that information back to the pack. Rolling in a decaying carcass, or even fresher meat, could be a way for wolves to tell members of the pack, look what I found. This behavior could make it easier for wolves to track down an abandoned kill, or just to trade information about their environment. Whatever the reason irresistible stinky scents are challenging to overcome, but carrying treats or a desirable toy, and working on the recall command regularly can improve your odds of escaping an odorous situation #roll #bathtime #dogslife #dogsworld #dogsonadventures #dogsthatexplore #loveyourdog #dogsofballarat #ballaratdogs #dogsofvictoria #dogsofinstagram #
