20.01.2022 The Weekly Times continues its support for Victorian duck hunters in their recent article. Field & Game chief, Dean O'Hara, calls for Victoria to adopt the sort of adaptive management that NSW DPI is using to assess its own duck populations, rather than being so reliant on the Eastern Australian Aerial Waterbird Survey.

16.01.2022 Well, nobody is more excited to show images of the recent Ibis breeding grounds or Rookery at Reedy Lake Geelong than Field and Game Geelong branch President ...Trent Leen. Pictured here are just a few of the many birds busily breeding and adding to their numbers. Witnessed recently whilst conducting the FGA November Waterfowl Counts completed every year by our dedicated volunteers. As the regional coordinator of the counts, Trent witnessed this breeding event personally and captured the images attached. Combined with the extraordinary breeding of various duck species and parrots, it’s been an exceptional year and one to record. And record Trent has, trail camera footage has been captured of the many species breeding and predation by foxes and crows. The work Trent has conducted in recent years in conjunction with Deakin University and Professor Marcel Klaassen along with his team is incredible. Geelong Field and Game is fortunate to have such a dedicated leader, who continues to contribute in ways never attempted before. Thank you Trent Leen from Field and Game Australia for your tenacity and commitment that inspires others around you. If you would like to be a part of future projects, contact Field and Game Australia’s Hunting and Conservation Manager - Glenn Falla @[email protected] to express your interest. Trent and the Geelong branch would love to have YOU volunteer your time to assist and as we all know, many hands make light work. The Connewarre Wetland Centre takes many volunteer hours to maintain and the various wetland projects engulf even more time and effort. Without a dedicated team behind him, Trent will not be able to continue the growth of projects at the rate in which he would like. Help those who help us, with your assistance we can continue to achieve great things. Volunteer TODAY

13.01.2022 Due to Facebook taking down our page last week, you may have missed this gem of an article: The Weekly Times reports on how the NSW Department of Primary Industries has raised its duck cull quota after a rise in population - raising questions surrounding Victoria's choice to restrict their season. This NSW survey supports what Field & Game have said, that there’s no reason for there not being a full season and bag limit in Victoria this season, Field & Game chief Dean O’Hara said.

13.01.2022 Some great news for our Victorian branches and members today with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions!

12.01.2022 We have had a number of enquiries from members regarding the Echuca Moama Field & Game New Years shoot, we can confirm that unfortunately it has been cancelled.

12.01.2022 Field & Game Australia has today made its submission to the Game Management Authority with regards to the Victorian Duck Hunting Season 2021. FGA can find no evidence that could argue that the legislated season as prescribed in law should be changed. FGA also recommended that the changing to opening times that was introduced as a pilot for 2 years in 2018, has not currently demonstrated any benefits and, therefore the opening times as prescribed within the law need to be in p...lace for the 2021 season. DJPR who were at the meeting had no response when asked to provide a report or evidence of benefits. The GMA when pressed admitted they had provided information to DJPR some 18 months ago. We are now in January 2021 and still no report. FGA challenged DJPR who have committed to follow up the outcomes. FGA has also prepared a supplementary report which we intend to send direct to Ministers and Departments which further evidences our position, which is based on the facts and data and is defendable not based on emotion or subjective views. Also at the meeting to present to the GMA were RSPCA who's policy position is to oppose duck hunting period. Animals Australia who's position was to ban a season in 2021, Birdlife Australia who's view was that breeding stock would be significantly impacted and SSAA who also supported a full season. As the only duck hunting organisation with a seat at the table, we prosecuted our case directly to the GMA. Further more we will be also be speaking directly to Ministers and prosecuting our case on behalf of you our members. We take great pride and responsibility to represent members to ensure sustainable duck hunting in Victoria continues for generations. The full submission will be available on our website later today.

01.01.2022 Waterfowl Monitoring announcement a welcome step forward in accessing game bird abundance Field & Game Australia welcomes todays announcement that the GMA will shortly commence a survey of game bird abundance in Victoria. This survey will be conducted through helicopter counts of 500-600 wetlands (including farm dams, sewage ponds, and wetlands) randomly selected through a survey design prepared by the Arthur Rylah Institute. After a very long wait, we are pleased to see thi...s progress and agree that it is a positive step toward the Victorian Duck Season decisions being based on facts, evidence and science and not on instinct, intuition, prejudice and ideology. A welcome investment of significant funds by our Government through Game Management Authority and Arthur Rylah Institute. Field & Game Australia has for some time requested that the Victorian Government looks to use all available technology (such as that used by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries) to support decision making process. This pilot program, which will be used to assess the survey design and methodology, appears upon the surface to do just that. An important step forward, as the abundance survey will become a key input into an Adaptive Harvest Management model. This is a pilot survey to test the sampling methodology for an abundance survey that will form part of the inputs into an Adaptive Harvest Management model. We understand that it is not the introduction of an Adaptive Harvest Management model for the 2021 duck season and we welcome that cautious approach. Field and Game Australia look forward to further genuine consultation and engagement during the process of firming up an Adaptive Harvest Management model that is considered appropriate, let us make sure there is no devil in the detail first. That way all hunting organisations can support and embrace the model in-order to protect what Field and Game Australia have fought so hard for since 1958, sustainability of ethical and responsible game bird harvesting through appropriate management and measures. https://www.gma.vic.gov.au/research/duck-research
