21.01.2022 As the fires continue to burn huge parts of Australia this summer, it's important to understand and be aware of the risks of living, and building in bushfire prone areas and landscapes. Building in bushfire prone areas is certainly something to take seriously, and while the current construction standards aren't a guarantee the your house will be safe, it's interesting to see evidence of how effective they are at protecting the building. Some interesting points also raised regarding the costs and difficulty of trying to retrofit fire protection to older buildings.

19.01.2022 the Wood Fired Ovens and BBQ Pavilions we designed for the Queens Domain Community Hub are now open, with community bake days for the ovens, and bookable BBQs: https://www.hobartcity.com.au//Community-Hub-at-the-Queens

19.01.2022 Work in Progress - a new house in the foothills behind Margate. The clients came to us with a sketch design and brief to use SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) for the construction. Looking forward to seeing some more progress on this house we completed design development and documentation on in an awesome site in Margate, being built by The Prefab Lab. The clients have chosen to use pre-fabricated Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the bulk of the build, which will prov...ide a super insulated shell for the house, with R-values for the walls of R5.7 and roof R-values of R7.0. The SIPs inherently provide a very air-tight envelope, which helps minimise heat loss through drafts and "leaky" traditional building systems. In managing the ventilation in such an air-tight building, the house will include a Zehnder heat recovery system for controlling air changes throughout the house and minimising heat loss in the provision of fresh air. Its been exciting researching and applying new and green building technologies and passive-house level detailing for this project.

18.01.2022 A perfect time for the reinstatement of a State Architect!

17.01.2022 there is "a growing body of evidence shows that skateboarding can help attract investment, reclaim public spaces and create resilient communities"

15.01.2022 At the #tasarchitectureawards2019 on the weekend, our #domaincommunityhub was given an Award for Public Architecture by the Australian Institute of Architects. The park was officially opened last week, and has been renamed Legacy Park, to honour its location as part of the Soldiers Memorial Walk from the Cenotaph. In the last 6 months since its unofficial opening in December 2018 there have been nearly 200 bookings / 9000 people using the BBQs and wood fired ovens, as well... as countless kids using the nature based play ground. Thanks to @cityofhobarttas for the vision and commitment to the project, @playce_la for leading the design team, great landscaping and nature play design, @gaetanopalmese for the role as superintendents representative, and #tascon for the construction. #tasmanianarchitecture #fieldlabs_architecture #fieldlabs_smo @m_a_sansom

15.01.2022 The area between the Soldiers Memorial Oval and the Domain Athletic Centre has been developed into a new Community Hub, providing communal facilities including a barbecues, a nature-based Playscape and two Wood Fired Ovens. The overall masterplan includes axial references the site in its broader context (kunanyi / Mt. Wellington) and the Derwent River, with conceptual cues taken from the prospect, refuge, and geological structures within the Lost World, and summit of kunanyi .../ Mt. Wellington. The immediate contextual response was to the established bush landscape of the Domain, and the site as the termination of the Soldiers Memorial Walk, from the Cenotaph. Material cues were taken from the memorial Cyprus trees, and adjacent Eltham pavilion, with the aim of creating a coherent language to the built form in the area. The Playscape was developed as an inclusive play space, for children of different ages and abilities, and invites children to climb, clamber and provides opportunities for imagination when playing. The spaces are intended to be flexible and allow for a variety of scales of interaction, with a primary activity area alongside the main toilet and oven pavilion, with secondary activity areas adjacent to the smaller BBQ pavilions. The project has provided much needed facilities to help service the existing activities around the Soldiers Memorial Ovals, and has reactivated an otherwise vacant carpark site. The Wood Fired Ovens and BBQ facilities fill a void within the Hobart CBD for bookable shelters for the public, and the play area is unique within Hobart. The Wood Fired Ovens are for the use of everyone in Hobart, from community groups and organisations to small gatherings of families or friends. The Wood Fired Ovens are fired up every second Sunday for free community use. The main pavilions forms a central hub to activity within the site, containing toilets, storage, and wood fired ovens. Open space, accessible paths, and play areas link the site and remaining pavilions and activity areas. The project team comprised of Playce Landscape Architects who were the lead consultant, and developed the masterplan for the site, and playspace design and documentation. Field Labs were a part of the Playce team, and worked on the overall conceptual design response, design and documentation for the pavilion structures. Gaetano Palmese of Gaetano Palmese Architects was engaged by Hobart City Council in the role of Superintendents Representative and as such oversaw the contract administration of the project from post tender, through construction to completion of the project. 13.01.2022 https://www.instagram.com/p/BmhIceuHfu_/ Great little conversational piece looking at the current shortfalls and way forward for looking at planning in Hobart.

13.01.2022 https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh11RRIFXBK/ Joost Bakker just posted a series of very interesting posts on Instagram, looking at "failed" projects. Hes got an inspirational poly-everything design approach. Theres a lot to be learned from projects that never quite went forward, especially when they are based on big ideas! Bureaucracy and innovation rarely seem to meet.

12.01.2022 Given our current issues with waste, landfill, and recycling, its great to see a design led solution to dealing with waste and creating energy in a way that adds value to the community and public space

10.01.2022 Interesting article and example of how Auckland is dealing with increasing densification through urban planning in its specific area zoning, the Terraced Housing and Apartment Building (THAB), and an ethical, market based development model: https://architecturenow.co.nz/arti/first-thab-off-the-rank/

10.01.2022 TASMANIAN TIMBER NATIONAL PRIZE CHEAT The publicly-funded Tasmanian Timber Promotion Board has laden the nation’s architects with deceptive information that is ...being challenged by Bob Brown Foundation. The Sydney-based magazine Architecture and Design is hosting national architecture awards this Thursday night with Tasmanian Timber funding the category of ‘multiple dwelling’ following a full page article which Bob Brown says is an outrageous misrepresentation of Tasmanian forest logging. "As logging of Swift parrot nesting sites and Tasmanian Devil habitat shows, Tasmanian Timber’s statement to architects that ‘Forest Practices Authority ... have teams of auditors combing the production forest for areas of environmental significance and cordoning them off’ is either false or ineffective, Bob Brown said. Last weekend two Forestry Watch volunteers inspected a coupe in the Swift Parrot core breeding range with excellent Swift Parrot foraging areas. Sus Timber Tas can’t even abide by the deficient rules and cannot guarantee that timber sold is not from habitat for critically endangered species. This highlights the need for more stringent regulations for the protection of our threatened species, Forestry Watch spokesperson, Jack O’Hare said. Tasmanian Timber’s claim that ‘everything that is harvested is already regenerated’ is sheer nonsense which has no place in a reputable trade magazine. As is ‘the other key aspect of the industry’s sustainability journey - nothing goes to waste’ - refuted by STT’s huge smoke plumes rising each year from the millions of tonnes of forest left to waste and incinerated on the forest floor, Bob Brown said. We will reach Australia’s architects and designers with the truth that there is enough plantation timber to meet this nation’s needs and the logging and incineration of what’s left of Tasmania’s native forests and wildlife habitats is unsustainable, archaic and will cease, Brown said.

08.01.2022 Constance meets Risdon meets Dark Mofo. This year Constance will be presenting The Pink Palace in the old Goodyear Tyre and Auto Warehouse on Bathurst street.... Over the past six months, four Tasmanian artists have been working in collaboration with four Risdon Prison inmates to create a series of new video works examining the experience of time on the inside. Constance have been humbled by the support of the Department of Justice and Risdon Prison in making this happen. We are very proud of this project and very excited to share it with you.

07.01.2022 Hobart needs a plan for housing density. 20,000 to 30,000 homes in the next 20 years is a demand that should be planned for, with density encouraged over sprawl.

06.01.2022 https://architectureau.com//2019-tasmanian-architecture-/ The Domain Community Hub has been shortlisted in this years awards! Congratulations to everyone whos made the shortlist this year, its an honour to share your company amongst such a strong field of projects.

03.01.2022 Weve been working with Cykel Architecture and SolutionsWon Group Pty Ltd to submit a Development Application for social housing and a community centre for Possability in East Devonport. A couple of our renders feature in the WIN News Tasmania story below:

03.01.2022 A great little building:

03.01.2022 The Margate House was completed in January 2018. The clients, with a background in design, came with a concept and preferred building system - Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). The design was refined and developed into its final form, with the construction being a hybrid of timber framing for the floors, and SIPs for the walls and ceilings. The SIPs provide R values between R5.7 for the walls and R.7 for the roof. To add to the thermal performance, triple glazed uPVC windo...ws from Germany were installed. The plan is made up of a series of pavilions, each oriented to take in different views, and to create a courtyard, and each pavilion having its own function - kitchen, dining, master bed, guest wing and a separate garage and studio. 03.01.2022 While the housing shortage is in the news, and Dark Mofo fills the towns AirBnB, and government is about to vote on a "pause" on AirBnBs in Battery Point, take some time to explore some of the data: http://insideairbnb.com/tasmania/ "Greens Leader Cassy OConnor wants a regulatory "pause" on entire homes in Greater Hobart being listed on Airbnb and other short-stay accommodation websites.... The most recent overview of housing data from the University of Tasmanias Institute for the Study of Social Change found there were almost 2,000 Airbnb listings for Greater Hobart in February, a 212 per cent growth since July 2016. Seventy-six per cent of those listings were for entire properties. Ms OConnor said she would table a notice of motion on Wednesday, which would be a quick fix to Hobarts housing pressures while longer-term policies were developed. "We need to press pause," she said." http://www.abc.net.au//tas-hickey-to-be-tested-on-/9858890
